Psychosocial correlates of marijuana use and problem drinking in a national sample of adolescents.

Personality, environmental, and behavioral variables representing psychosocial risk factors for adolescent problem behavior were assessed in … ariation in marijuana use. The pattern is nearly identical to the pattern that accounts for problem drinking in these same adolescents. The similarity of the patterns of psychosocial risk, and the substantial correlations of marijuana use with problem drinking and with other problem behaviors, suggest that marijuana use is best seen as part of a syndrome o …

Diagnostic value of the water-drinking test in early detection of simple glaucoma.

A series of 64 patients (119 eyes) subjected 10 years previously to water provocative tests on a suspicion of simple glaucoma were followed … ative in 88 eyes. Of these, 21 (24 per cent) developed glaucomatous visual field defects. The water-drinking test was negative in 70 per cent of the eyes which subsequently developed visual field defects and negative in 75 per cent of those in which no defects developed. Thus the test was neither of diagnostic nor of prognostic value. All the eyes with a p …

Alcohol drinking in the rat after destruction of serotonergic and catecholaminergic neurons in the brain.

Rats were offered solutions of ethyl alcohol that were increased in strength from 3-30% concentration over a 12 day interval. Then, 50 mug 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine (5,6-DHT), 200 mug 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), or 100 mug 5, 7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT) were injected acutely into the lateral cerebral ventricle in a 20 mul volume. The selection of ethyl alcohol was enhanced following the lesioning of serotonergic neurons by 5,6-DHT in terms of preference-aversion curves as well as the gm/kg intakes. Conversely, a similar destruction of dopamine and norepinephrine containing neurons by 6-OHDA

The social context of drinking and its association with days of heavy episodic drinking in the past month among a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults in the United States, 2021-23.

INTRODUCTION: Prior research links solitary drinking under the age of 21 years, the legal drinking age in the USA, with adverse health later in life. This study examines associations between the social context of drinking (i.e. drinking alone vs with others) and the frequency of heavy episodic drinking (HED) days in the past 30 days among 12-20-year-olds in the USA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We aggregated National Survey on Drug Use and Health data from 2021 to 2023 for all individuals aged 12-20 years who drank alcohol in the past month (unweighted n = 6 261). The focal independent variable of …

Cytotoxicity Assessment and Environmental Fate of Halogenated 4-Hydroxy-Benzaldehydes in Drinking Water.

Halogenated 4-hydroxy-benzaldehydes (HHBALs) are a class of aromatic disinfection byproducts (DBPs) with relatively high cytotoxic potency. However, their cytotoxicity and environmental fate in drinking water remain unclear, which must be systematically addressed. The concentration level of HHBALs in tap water samples from 15 major cities in China ranges from several tens to hundreds of ng/L, and the median lethal concentration of HHBALs to Chinese hamster ovary cell is 78.52-638.27 μM, which is comparable to the cytotoxic potency of aliphatic nitrogenous DBPs. The risk quotient analysis revea…

Investigation of cyanobacteria-hosted antibiotic resistance genes in cyanoHAB-impacted drinking water sources.

Freshwater cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are expanding across the world, and their frequency and severity are becoming more intense due … xt. We looked for the presence of cyanobacteria-hosted ARGs using shotgun metagenomic sequencing of drinking water source samples collected during the bloom season (summer and fall) from Lake Erie and Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM). ARGs were annotated using DeepARG and Resistance Gene Identifier (RGI). Cyanobacteria were annotated to host genes conferring pu …

Three-Arm Randomized Controlled Trial of Motivational Interviewing for Adolescent Drinking in Denmark.

OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of group motivational interviewing (GMI) and school/parent intervention (SP) in reducing drinking among public high school students in Denmark, a region with high rates of hazardous alcohol use. METHOD: This was a 3-arm, cluster-randomized controlled trial in 16 public high schools block-randomized to the following: (1) 2-session, manualized GMI coupled with SP; (2) SP-only; or (3) assessment-only control. A total of 2,766 students (65.53% female; mean age = 16.77 years, range = 15-19 years) completed online surveys during class periods at baseline and at …

The Sex-Dependent Relationship Between Amygdala Activation and Depressive Symptoms With Problematic Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Although the initiation of alcohol consumption is common during adolescence, some individuals engage in binge drinking behavior that could lead to harmful consequences such as developing alcohol use disorder later in life. Evidence suggests a relationship between depressive symptoms and harmful alcohol consumption that seems to vary depending on sex. Furthermore, it has been suggested that amygdala activation in response to negative emotional stimuli influences drinking due to depressive mood states. Therefore, we expected a sex-dependent effect of neuronal activation and depressiv…

The S1-insula Circuit Differentially Modulates Alcohol Drinking and Aversive Behavior in Mice.

Sensory processing assigns salience to environmental and internal stimuli, shaping behavior through learned associations. In alcohol use disorder (AUD), sensory cue processing is dysregulated, driving problematic drinking patterns and hyperkatifeia in abstinence. While visual, olfactory, and taste cues are known to influence AUD progression, the neurocircuit mechanisms that regulate sensory information in addiction remain poorly understood. The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) encodes tactile, thermal, proprioceptive, and nociceptive inputs and projects to higher-order regions involved in mot…

Understanding predictors of binge-drinking behaviors among college students: a random forests analysis.

Objective: This study used a machine learning approach to examine how marijuana use, social connectedness, psychological distress, and demographic characteristics predicted binge drinking (BD) among 31,120 college students from the 2021-2022 Healthy Minds Study. Methods: A random forests analysis was used to assess the influence of predictors of binge drinking, and partial dependence plots and mixed-effects logistic regression were used to determine the direction of each predictor. Results: Findings indicated that marijuana use, older age, lower religiosity, depression, and diminished sense of…

Microplastics in drinking water distribution systems: Occurrence, environmental behavior, and human health concerns.

Microplastics, increasingly detected in drinking water, have sparked growing concern due to their persistence, potential bioaccumulation, and risks to human health. Elucidating their fate in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) is critical for accurately assessing exposure risks and guiding effective mitigation strategies. This review systematically evaluates the microplastic occurrence at key nodes in DWDSs, their morphological characteristics, and environmental behaviors within the network. Direct comparisons across studies are hindered by methodological inconsistencies, highlighting …

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia among heavy-drinking veterans: a randomized pilot trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Two in five Veterans report symptoms of insomnia, with higher rates among those who drink heavily. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) has demonstrated efficacy among those with Alcohol Use Disorder, abstinence is often considered a prerequisite for treatment, leaving its impact unclear among those who are actively drinking. This trial tested the efficacy of CBT-I among heavy-drinking Veterans with insomnia (#NCT03804788). METHODS: Veterans from across the United States were randomly assigned to CBT-I or sleep hygiene control. Participants completed re…

Lateral hypothalamus CRFR1 regulation of chronic binge drinking: divergence along anterior-posterior axis.

Binge alcohol drinking increases the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD) and comorbid psychopathology. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is a brain structure that integrates cognitive and sensory information to tightly regulate motivated behavior, including binge drinking. Importantly, LH function is vulnerable to modulation by the pro-stress neuropeptide corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), and acute antagonism of CRF receptor 1 (CRFR1) in the LH blunts binge drinking. However, the role of LH CRFR1 in chronic binge drinking is unknown. We used genetically targeted knockdown (KD) of …

Social context and impaired control over alcohol use during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

RATIONALE: Drinking more than intended is a core feature of impaired control over alcohol use, yet scant research has sought to understand the dynamic manifestation, and event-level correlates, of exceeding intended intoxication, a related construct. This study hypothesized that contextual influences – number of drinking peers and perceived peer intoxication – would predict exceeding intended intoxication in real-time and quantity of alcohol consumed after intended intoxication was met. METHODS: Young adults reporting high intensity drinking (N = 199) completed 28-days of ecological momentary…
