Role of dentists in Indonesian disaster victim identification operations: religious and cultural aspects.

Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world, consisting of five main islands and 17,500 smaller islands, spread across three seismic belts that run throughout the country. Indonesia is extremely prone to disasters, both natural and manmade. With a total population of nearly 250 million people, Indonesia's Muslim community exceeds 180 million - the largest Muslim population in the world. On December 26, 2004 an earthquake and tsunami hit Aceh resulting in an estimated 165,00 deaths (mostly Muslims) and half a million people displaced. The members of the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI

Fukushima-derived radiocesium in the subarctic and transition areas of the North Pacific in 2017.

The East-Japan Earthquake and the subsequent tsunami on 11 March 2011 damaged the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP1). As a result, radioactive cesium isotopes (134Cs and 137Cs) and other radionuclides were released into the North Pacific Ocean. Over the past decade, previous studies have examined the transport processes and total inventory of the FNPP1-derived radiocesium in the North Pacific. In this study, we measured vertical profiles of dissolved radiocesium at stations along nominal 47°N zonal and 145°W meridional lines during the summer of 2017. With these data, we delineated

A chip-level MEMS short-period seismometer for distributed planetary seismic networks.

Precise measurement of seismic activity is fundamental to planetary seismology. However, existing planetary microelectromechanical system (MEMS) seismometers encounter a critical bottleneck in balancing compact chip footprint, a low noise floor, and a wide measurement range. This paper presents a miniaturized MEMS seismometer, which has a compact chip footprint of only 5.2 mm × 6.5 mm. The device utilizes corrugated-gap capacitive sensing comb fingers, which significantly reduce sensing nonlinearity while maintaining high displacement sensitivity, effectively extending the linear measurement r

Quantifying crowding-ventilation effect on respiratory infections.

Crowded and poorly ventilated indoor spaces drive outbreaks of respiratory infections such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), often leading to superspreading events. While overcrowding heightens risk, its interplay with space size and ventilation remains underexplored. We introduce a framework to assess this risk, using effective clean flow rate, which combines clean airflow (outdoor air, filtration, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation) with volume-time air clearance (VTAC), i.e., dilution from indoor air volume per person over time, and intake fraction time, which quantifies aerosol expos

A Prototype of a Lightweight Structural Health Monitoring System Based on Edge Computing.

Bridge Structural Health Monitoring (BSHM) is vital for assessing structural integrity and operational safety. Traditional wired systems are limited by high installation costs and complexity, while existing wireless systems still face issues with cost, synchronization, and reliability. Moreover, cloud-based methods for extreme event detection struggle to meet real-time and bandwidth constraints in edge environments. To address these challenges, this study proposes a lightweight wireless BSHM system based on edge computing, enabling local data acquisition and real-time intelligent detection of

Experimental investigation of seismic response of precast concrete panels with castellated keys support pillar connections under in-plane cyclic loading.

The reliable joint connection between precast members is vital to resisting earthquake loads in precast concrete structures. To further improve the convenience of precast construction, this paper presents a new horizontal joint of precast concrete panels with castellated keys supports pillar connections based on the stable mechanical properties of the wet concrete joint. To examine the seismic response of this connection type, a series of in-plane cyclic loading tests were carried out using six full-size precast specimens and one cast-in-place specimen for comparison. The influences of axial c

Potential association of prolonged patient interval and advanced anatomic stage in breast cancer patients in the area affected by the 2011 triple disaster in Fukushima, Japan: Retrospective observational study.

For five years after the 2011 triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster) in Japan, the proportion of patients with undiagnosed symptomatic breast cancer remained elevated in the coastal area of Fukushima. These individuals experienced a prolonged interval from first symptom recognition to initial medical consultation (hereafter referred to as the patient interval). We aimed to investigate how this prolonged patient interval affected disease staging.Using patient records, we retrospectively extracted females with newly and pathologically diagnosed breast cancer who initially pr

Instilling Hope and Resiliency: A Narrative Photo-Taking Intervention During an Intercultural Exchange Involving 9/11 Survivors in Post 3/11 Japan.

On March 11, 2011 ("3/11"), a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in Northeastern Japan triggered a tsunami and nuclear power plant meltdown that killed 16,000 people and displaced more than 470,000 people. Since 2012, a group of volunteer docents from the September 11th Families Association in New York City has traveled throughout Northeastern Japan and held organized meetings where 9/11 and 3/11 survivors share their experiences and stories of trauma as part of an intercultural exchange to promote posttraumatic recovery. We sought to elucidate whether participating 9/11 docents developed a sense of inc

A Review of Coccidioidomycosis in California: Exploring the Intersection of Land Use, Population Movement, and Climate Change.

California has seen a surge in coccidioidomycosis (valley fever), a disease spread by the Coccidioides immitis fungus found in soil throughout the state, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley. We reviewed epidemiologic studies in which outbreak and sporadic cases of coccidioidomycosis were examined, and we considered the possible relationship of these cases to environmental conditions, particularly the state's increasing aridity, drought, and wildfire conditions. Most of the studies we reviewed pertained to cases occupationally acquired in construction, military, archeological, and correction

A Metagenomic Approach to Evaluating Surface Water Quality in Haiti.

The cholera epidemic that occurred in Haiti post-earthquake in 2010 has resulted in over 9000 deaths during the past eight years. Currently, morbidity and mortality rates for cholera have declined, but cholera cases still occur on a daily basis. One continuing issue is an inability to accurately predict and identify when cholera outbreaks might occur. To explore this surveillance gap, a metagenomic approach employing environmental samples was taken. In this study, surface water samples were collected at two time points from several sites near the original epicenter of the cholera outbreak in t

Haitian people's expectations regarding post-disaster humanitarian aid teams' actions.

The way people at the receiving end of humanitarian assistance perceive this intervention may provide invaluable bottom-up feedback to improve the quality of the intervention. We analyzed and mapped Haitians' views regarding international humanitarian aid in cases of natural disaster. Two hundred fifty participants-137 women and 113 men aged 18-67-who had suffered from the consequences of the earthquake in 2010 were presented with a series of vignettes depicting a humanitarian team's action and were asked to what extent these actions corresponded to what ought to be expected from an internatio

[Effect of ionizing radiation on the living body].

Since the Fukushima nuclear plant accident following the great East Japan earthquake on March 11, 2011, we have been warned to be careful about possible radiation exposure almost every day in newspapers and on TV. Radioactive iodine ((131)I) and cesium ((134)Cs, (137)Cs) produced by nuclear reactions were released into the air during and after the accident, and have been scattered by the winds in Tohoku and in the Kanto district. Even today, 2 years after the accident, there is great public concern about possible pollution of foodstuffs and fishery products with radioactive cesium, not only in

Making cities resilient: Increasing resilience to disasters at the local level.

Half of humanity is now living in cities, according to the United Nations Population Division. The urban population exceeded the rural for the first time in 2008, and by 2050 urbanisation will rise to 70 per cent with increased urban risk. 'Today, 100 cities are in control of 30 per cent of the world's economy.' The need for maintenance and upkeep of these cities makes safety measures for their citizens crucial. In this context, urban risk, city planning and the role of local governments in dealing with risk reduction have been recognised as key factors to build communities resilient to disast
