Examination of the relative importance of hospital employment in non-metropolitan counties using location quotients.

INTRODUCTION: The US Health Care and Social Services sector (North American Industrial Classification System 'sector 62') has become an extremely important component of the nation's economy, employing approximately 18 million workers and generating almost $753 billion in annual payrolls. At the county level, the health care and social services sector is typically the largest or second largest employer. Hospital employment is often the largest component of the sector's total employment. Hospital employment is particularly important to non-metropolitan or rural communities. A high quality health

Follow the Cuts in American Healthcare From 2001 to 2026: A Three-Ledger Analysis of Scrutiny-Control Inversion, Payment Restraint, Revenue Capture, and Official Blame.

Background Physicians are frequently portrayed as principal drivers of American healthcare spending, although they often lack control over the prices, benchmarks, ownership structures, and corporate revenue flows attached to the care they provide. We examined whether federal cost policy directs scrutiny and containment toward economic actors in proportion to their control over price and revenue. Methodology We conducted a purposive structured descriptive analysis of major federal payment and cost-containment policies from January 2001 through July 2026. Evidence was organized into the followin

Housing Status, Medical Care, and Health Outcomes Among People Living With HIV/AIDS: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests responses to HIV that combine individual-level interventions with those that address structural or contextual factors that influence risks and health outcomes of infection. Housing is such a factor. Housing occupies a strategic position as an intermediate structural factor, linking "upstream" economic, social, and cultural determinants to the more immediate physical and social environments in which everyday life is lived. The importance of housing status for HIV prevention and care has been recognized, but much of this attention has focused on homeles

Inpatient national trends and aggregate costs of primary and revision lumbar fusion in the US from 2016 to 2022.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: With increasing utilization of lumbar fusions and a growing emphasis on value-based care, a contemporary understanding of national trends in procedural volume and cost is needed. While prior studies have demonstrated increases in lumbar fusion volume in past decades, they did not include more recent years or provide a granular breakdown distinguishing primary and revision procedures. PURPOSE: This study aimed to define recent national trends in the utilization, aggregate costs, and revision burden of lumbar fusions in the US. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Retrospective database a

Glycosylated NS3/NS3A protein of bluetongue virus facilitates efficient viral egress via lipid raft anchoring.

Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an economically important arbovirus of ruminants worldwide. The nonstructural glycoprotein NS3/NS3A contains a uniquely conserved N-linked glycosylation site at Asn150; yet, the functional consequences of this modification have remained unclear. Here, we characterize the Asn150-linked glycan and show that it predominantly comprises high-mannose structures that undergo maturation specifically in mammalian cells. Using a reverse-genetics system, we demonstrate that N-linked glycosylation is not required to maintain NS3/NS3A stability or its interaction with outer capsid

Development and immunogenicity of a recombinant PRRSV live vector co-expressing CSFV E2 antigen and porcine IL-18 for multivalent swine vaccination.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) are among the most economically devastating viral pathogens in the global swine industry, causing substantial and often incalculable economic losses. In field vaccination programs, the mutual interference between the immune responses elicited by CSFV and PRRSV vaccines markedly restricts the flexibility of immunization schedules, while the limited cross-protective capacity of current PRRSV vaccines remains an inherent and unavoidable challenge in swine disease management. To address these limitat

From extraction to closed-loop recovery: recent advances in ionic-liquid-based recycling of platinum-group metals.

Platinum-group metals (PGMs), consisting of Pt, Pd, Rh, Ru, Ir, and Os, are strategically important materials because of their scarcity, high economic value, and essential roles in automotive catalysts, fuel cells, electronics, chemical processing, and emerging energy technologies. However, their increasing accumulation in spent catalysts and other secondary resources has spurred the development of more selective and resource-efficient recovery processes. Conventional hydrometallurgical processes can reach high recoveries but often require aggressive leaching media, multiple separation steps,

Genomic analysis of jumbo coliphage fEgEco12.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) infections are associated with major economic losses, cause perihepatitis, pericarditis, septicemia and even systemic infections in the poultry industry. APEC infections have usually been controlled by antibiotics, resulting in an increased prevalence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli. Concerns have been increased that transfer of antibiotic-resistant APEC via the food chain may cause risks for extra-intestinal infection of humans related to zoonotic transfer and increased difficulties in the treatment of human infections caused APEC-related E. coli types

LED vs. halogen illumination for hyperspectral imaging in the NIR range of space-derived waste materials.

Circular economic models play an important role in the context of waste management, which is essential for reducing environmental impact and preserving resources. For recycling procedures to be optimized, materials must be accurately identified and classified. In space, waste accumulation poses risks to missions and increases debris in orbit. Therefore, effective waste management systems are essential for mitigating hazards and reducing the environmental footprint of space activities. Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) in the Near Infrared (NIR) range offers a non-invasive solution for real-time mate

Multimodal molecular mechanisms of octanoic acid (OA) against recurrent mastitis causing pathogens.

Recurrent bovine mastitis is a global concern that causes substantial economic losses and is exacerbated by pathogen internalization into mammary epithelial cells, and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. These challenges necessitate the development of alternative antimicrobial strategies with multimodal activity. In this study, the naturally occurring molecule octanoic acid (OA) was evaluated for its antimicrobial efficacy and multitargeted mode of action against mastitis-associated pathogens. OA exhibited rapid bactericidal activity within 1 h and significantly reduced bacterial pathog

From survival to freedom: redefining success in type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes has shifted from a condition once associated with early mortality to a chronic disease owing to the development of intensive insulin therapy, continuous glucose monitoring, and hybrid closed-loop systems. Despite near-normoglycaemia becoming an attainable target, residual excess mortality and cardiovascular risk persist. These outcomes are thought to reflect the long-term biological legacy of earlier dysglycaemia, including metabolic and epigenetic memory associated with inflammatory and vascular vulnerability. As survival for people with type 1 diabetes lengthens, morbidity in

A successful stacking of multiple biotic stress resistance in rice facilitated by genes and precision breeding tools.

BACKGROUND: Genetic improvement of rice for biotic stress is a major and continuous breeding objective owing to changing pest and disease scenarios. In response to climate change, an outbreak of new pathotypes and biotypes results in huge yield loss which directly impacts the economic stability and food security. The development of varieties with multiple resistance genes for a particular disease is the most effective approach to the combating mechanism against evolving pathogens and insects. Multiple resistance genes against blast (Pi54), bacterial leaf blight (xa5, xa13, Xa21), and brown pla…

Adaptive optimization of combined steam and CO2 reforming for hydrogen production from variable biogas feed.

Biogas-to-hydrogen (B2H2) conversion offers a sustainable pathway for valorizing organic waste-derived biogas from anaerobic digestion (AD) into clean energy carriers. However, temporal variations in biogas composition strongly influence the endothermic nature of direct reforming reactions, burner fuel quality, and overall process stability. This study systematically investigates the effect of biogas variability on the B2H2 process through a comprehensive parametric analysis, based on a techno-economic-environmental analysis, evaluating three key indicators: unit hydrogen production cost (UPC)

Multi-level responses of Camellia reticulata to heat stress: insights from photosynthetic performance, antioxidant activity, lipidomics, and fatty acid profiling.

BACKGROUND: Climate change-induced heatwaves threaten the sustainable cultivation of Camellia reticulata, a valuable oil-producing species adapted to cool climates. Despite its economic importance, the mechanisms underlying its response to elevated temperatures are poorly understood. We hypothesized that C. reticulata activates distinct physiological and lipidomic adjustments to cope with different intensities of heat stress. To test this hypothesis, we subjected plants to three temperature regimes: 25 °C (control), 35 °C, and 40 °C, and conducted an integrated analysis of physiological traits
