A large cyst of Skene's duct -- a rare cause of superficial dyspareunia.

A case is reported which illustrates a rare cause of external dyspareunia, probably of Neisserial origin, and satisfactorily resolved by surgical extirpation. The morphological and embryological significance of the Skene's duct and related cysts are discussed.

[Posterior Communicating Artery / Posterior Cerebral Artery].

Thorough understanding of the vascular anatomy, including embryological development of vessels is important to safely perform endovascular procedures. The posterior cerebral and anterior choroidal arteries are embryologically complementary, which suggests a potential network. Numerous perforators originate from the posterior communicating and posterior cerebral arteries. The tuberothalamic artery arising from the posterior communicating artery and the thalamoperforating artery, which originates from the P1 segment of the posterior cerebral artery are clinically important because occlusion of t

Abdominal wall defects.

Abdominal wall defects are common congenital anomalies with the most frequent being gastroschisis and omphalocele. Though both are the result of errors during embryologic development of the fetal abdominal wall, gastroschisis and omphalocele represent unique disorders that have different clinical sequelae. Gastroschisis is generally a solitary anomaly with postnatal outcomes related to the underlying integrity of the prolapsed bowel. In contrast, omphalocele is frequently associated with other structural anomalies or genetic syndromes that contribute more to postnatal outcomes than the omphalo

Considering the Ectopic Pituitary Gland in Evaluation of the Nasopharyngeal Mass.

IMPORTANCE: Extracranial pituitary ectopia is an uncommon finding characterized by all or a portion of the pituitary gland situated in an aberrant location. Often these lesions come to clinical attention only once they begin to function abnormally or increase in size significantly. OBSERVATIONS: We describe an incidentally noted, asymptomatic pedunculated nasopharyngeal lesion in a 13-month-old girl that may be an extracranial pituitary gland. Consideration of this rare anomaly cautioned against performing a biopsy and may have prevented inadvertent removal of functional pituitary tissue. We

A rare congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt affecting the inferior mesenteric vein, inferior vena cava, and left ovarian vein.

PURPOSE: To observe a case of congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt and discuss it from the embryological and clinical viewpoints. METHODS: An 85-year-old female cadaver was employed for a dissection course at Aichi Medical University in 2009. RESULTS: There was no evidence of liver cirrhosis macroscopically or microscopically. A portosystemic shunt was observed that involved communication between the inferior mesenteric vein, inferior vena cava (IVC), and left ovarian vein by a single Y-shaped shunt vessel. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of

[Synchronous association of Bellini collecting ducts and pyelic transitional cell carcinoma].

Bellini's collecting ducts carcinoma represent a subgroup within renal carcinoma with an incidence of 0.4 to 2% of all renal tumours. The collecting ducts share their embryological origin in Wölf's duct with the calices, renal pelvis and ureter. This common embryological origin could justify the association of carcinoma originated in the collecting ducts with transitional urothelial carcinoma. This paper contributes two patients with Bellini's collecting ducts carcinoma associated to "in situ" carcinoma and transitional papillar carcinoma in the adjacent renal pelvis respectively. The authors

Lower mesodermal defects: a common cause of fetal and early neonatal death.

Among the first 1,130 referrals to the Wisconsin Stillbirth Service Program 17 infants have been recognized to share phenotypic characteristics involving the genital, urinary, lower gastrointestinal, and axial skeletal systems. The pattern of abnormalities identified appears to be limited to structures sharing a common embryologic origin. These features, for the most part, are shown to be non-randomly associated. No clearly definable sub-groups within this population are demonstrable. The pattern of abnormalities is defined to include abnormalities of the following structures as pathogenetical

Agenesis of the gallbladder revisited laparoscopically.

Gallbladder agenesis is an extremely rare disease. Necropsy incidence has been reported to be 0.016%. Failure to locate the gallbladder at the time of a planned cholecystectomy can be very challenging. We report such a case during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The indication for surgery in these patients are complaints of gallbladder symptoms along with a false-positive ultrasound study. During exploration, an abnormal location of the gallbladder has to be excluded. Ectopic gallbladder locations include intrahepatic, lesser omentum, retroperitoneal, retrohepatic, within the falciform ligamen

Musculoskeletal aspects of prune-belly syndrome. Description and pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the types and prevalence of musculoskeletal involvement in children with prune-belly syndrome, and to analyze the pathogenesis of the syndrome in relationship to the musculoskeletal deformities. DESIGN: A retrospective review of charts and roentgenograms along with a comprehensive review of 188 cases from the literature. SETTING: Tertiary care children's hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve boys treated between 1975 and 1990. MEASUREMENTS/MAIN RESULTS: The prevalence of musculoskeletal involvement in patients was 45%. The involvement can be congenital (eg, clubfeet, limb
