A surprising finding related to executive control in a patient sample of hypersexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior often exhibit features of impulsivity, cognitive rigidity, and poor judgment as well as deficits in emotion regulation and excessive preoccupation with sex. Some of these characteristics are also common among patients presenting with neurological pathology associated with executive dysfunction. Exploring relationships between dysregulated sexual behavior and executive deficits will enhance our understanding of hypersexuality. AIM: This study sought to assess whether patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior exhibit executive de

Cognitive and behavioral risk factors for low quality of life in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: With high survival rates for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), long-term quality of life is a prominent consideration in treatment. We concurrently evaluated cognition, behavior, and quality of life in child and adolescent ALL survivors and determined associations between them. METHODS: The sample included 83 controls (mean age: 12.5 years) and 71 ALL survivors (mean age: 11.9 years, mean age at diagnosis: 3.8 years). Participants completed measures of general intellectual abilities, math achievement, and fine motor skills. Parents and teachers completed a survey asses

HMDF-Net: a transfer learning-based heterogeneous multimodal dynamic fusion network for depression detection among inmates in correctional facilities.

OBJECTIVE: In correctional institutions, inmates frequently suffer from mental health issues (such as depression), which can easily lead to emergencies like suicide, self-harm, and violent conflicts, posing severe challenges to security management and recidivism prevention. Traditional assessment methods have limitations such as subjectivity, lag, and low efficiency, which may result in misjudgment, omission, and delayed judgment. To address these issues, this study aims to develop an automated depression screening model suitable for the complex scenarios in correctional institutions to achiev

Gender Bias When Using Artificial Intelligence to Assess Anorexia Nervosa on Social Media: Data-Driven Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media sites are becoming an increasingly important source of information about mental health disorders. Among them, eating disorders are complex psychological problems that involve unhealthy eating habits. In particular, there is evidence showing that signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa can be traced in social media platforms. Knowing that input data biases tend to be amplified by artificial intelligence algorithms and, in particular, machine learning, these methods should be revised to mitigate biased discrimination in such important domains. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of

Feasibility of an Autism-Focused Augmented Reality Smartglasses System for Social Communication and Behavioral Coaching.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder with a rapidly rising prevalence, currently affecting 1 in 68 children, and over 3.5 million people in the United States. Current ASD interventions are primarily based on in-person behavioral therapies that are both costly and difficult to access. These interventions aim to address some of the fundamental deficits that clinically characterize ASD, including deficits in social communication, and the presence of stereotypies, and other autism-related behaviors. Current diagnostic and therapeutic approache

Perceived sources of stress in fifth year dental students--a comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: The term "stress" refers to the effect of certain external factors (physical or mental) on the individual's physical and psychological health. Stress is very high in dental medicine. It may well be generated by the process of training in dentistry. During their training dental students express high levels of stress and considerable stress-related symptoms such as physical problems, depression, obsessive-compulsive and personality disorders. The perceived stress can be dependent on socio-cultural factors. The type of personality, gender, emotional intelligence and other individual…

Prenatal alcohol and cocaine exposure: influences on cognition, speech, language, and hearing.

UNLABELLED: This paper reviews research on the consequences of prenatal exposure to alcohol and cocaine on children's speech, language, hearing, and cognitive development. The review shows that cognitive impairment, learning disabilities, and behavioral disorders are the central nervous system manifestations of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), and cranio-facial abnormalities are also present. Delays in language acquisition, as well as receptive and expressive language deficits, are commonly reported. The cranio-facial abnormalities of FAS, which sometimes include cleft palate, make the child pron

Zero-Shot Large Language Models for Preliminary Prediction of PTSD Symptoms From Clinical Interview Transcripts: Grands modèles de langage sans exemple pour la prédiction préliminaire des symptômes de TSPT à partir de transcriptions d'entrevues cliniques.

BackgroundPosttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is common yet frequently underdiagnosed, in part due to barriers to systematic screening and the reliance on self-report instruments. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in extracting clinically relevant information from unstructured language, but their ability to infer item-level PTSD symptom severity from clinical interviews remains unclear.MethodsUsing the Distress Analysis Interview Corpus-Wizard of Oz (DAIC-WoZ), we analyzed 100 semi-structured clinical interview transcripts paired with item-level PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (

Prenatal exposure to vaginal progesterone for the prevention of preterm birth is not associated with abnormal psychopathological and cognitive profiles in dichorionic twins at 6 to 9 years of age: a follow-up study of a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current evidence indicates that administration of vaginal progesterone to women with a twin gestation and a short cervix reduces the risk of preterm birth occurring at early gestational ages and of neonatal morbidity and mortality. However, the potential long-term effects of prenatal administration of vaginal progesterone for preventing preterm birth on the psychopathological and cognitive profiles of twins remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychopathological and cognitive profiles at 6 to 9 years of age of surviving children born to mothers who participated in a randomiz

AI-Driven Mental Health Support for Caregivers of Individuals With Alzheimer Disease: Systematic Literature Review and Development of a Conceptual Framework.

BACKGROUND: Caregivers supporting individuals with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) frequently encounter prolonged emotional strain, psychological distress, and social isolation, yet their needs are largely overlooked in current technological and clinical interventions. The special routines and obligations of caregivers of individuals with AD/ADRD are frequently not well-suited to the many artificial intelligence-driven (AI-driven) mental health solutions that are currently available. This reveals a critical need for sophisticated, customized solutions created especially to he

Can AI-driven games enhance social skills for autistic children? - A three-level meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Gamified interventions for autistic children are becoming increasingly diverse, enhancing their presence, immersion, and sense of accomplishment to improve various social skill indicators. Existing systematic reviews have primarily evaluated intervention effectiveness from the perspectives of game design and intervention objectives. However, these findings are inconsistent and fail to inspect specific improvements in social skills among autistic children. METHODS: To address this gap, this study adopts a three-level meta-analysis approach from the perspective of AI-driven games, e

Connected to the cloud at time of death: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Our case report provides the first clinical evaluation of autopsy practices for a patient death that occurs on the cloud. We question how autopsy practices may require adaptation for a death that presents via the 'Internet of Things', examining how existing guidelines capture data related to death which is no longer confined to the patient's body. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a British man in his 50s, who came to the attention of the medical team via an alert on the cloud-based platform that monitored his implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). The patient had a backgrou

Comparison of Chairside Cooperative Ability with Social Quotient of Mentally Challenged Children.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Fostering a positive dental attitude in children to enhance their oral health status and engaging them positively throughout their dental experience is the cornerstone of pediatric dentistry practices. The behavior of the child in a dental setting depends upon their emotional, psychological, and mental developmental state. Children with special health needs tend to have more anxiety than healthy children. A low level of social intelligence (SI), fewer adaptive skills, and poor social development take a longer time to accept dental treatment. Thus, social development can im

CAG Repeats Within the Non-pathological Range in the HTT Gene Influence Personality Traits in Patients With Subjective Cognitive Decline: A 13-Year Follow-Up Study.

OBJECTIVE: HTT is a gene containing a key region of CAG repeats. When expanded beyond 39 repeats, Huntington disease (HD) develops. HTT genes with <35 repeats are not associated with HD. The biological function of CAG repeat expansion below the non-pathological threshold is not well understood. In fact higher number of repeats in HTT confer advantageous changes in brain structure and general intelligence, but several studies focused on establishing the association between CAG expansions and susceptibility to psychiatric disturbances and to other neurodegenerative disease than HD. We hypothesiz
