DFT/TDDFT Study on the Sensing Mechanism of a Fluorescent Probe for Hydrogen Sulfide: Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer Coupled Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer.

By using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, the sensing mechanism of a fluorescent probe 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole (HBT) derivative HBTPP-S for hydrogen sulfide has been thoroughly studied. The thiolysis reaction has a moderate reaction barrier of 18.40 kcal mol-1, which indicates that the hydrogen sulfide sensing process has a favorable response speed. Because of the nonradiative donor-excited photoinduced electron transfer (d-PET, fluorophore as the electron donor) from the excited HBTPP group to the electron-withdrawing 2,4-

Theoretical insights into catalytic mechanism of protein arginine methyltransferase 1.

Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1), the major arginine asymmetric dimethylation enzyme in mammals, is emerging as a potential drug target for cancer and cardiovascular disease. Understanding the catalytic mechanism of PRMT1 will facilitate inhibitor design. However, detailed mechanisms of the methyl transfer process and substrate deprotonation of PRMT1 remain unclear. In this study, we present a theoretical study on PRMT1 catalyzed arginine dimethylation by employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculation. Ternary complex mode

A "turn on/off" scorpion biosensor targeting point mutation of SMN genes for diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy.

A "turn on/off" biosensor for diagnosis of exon 7 of the SMN1 gene was developed by employing a "scorpion primer". This scorpion primer was based on the principle of fluorescence resonance energy transfer using a fluorophore, a blocker and a quencher. It was successfully applied to detect 10 volunteer samples, and not only to in vitro testing.

Interfacial Coupling and Reconstruction in Glycerolate-Derived Co-Mn Selenium-Treated Products for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

The development of electrode materials with efficient charge transfer and abundant interfacial active sites remains a key challenge for high-performance supercapacitors. Compared with conventional inorganic precursors, glycerolate-derived materials provide tunable coordination environments and self-templated structural evolution, enabling the formation of porous architectures with abundant active interfaces after post-synthetic conversion. A bimetallic cobalt-manganese glycerolate (CoMn-G) is utilized as a precursor to construct Co-Mn-based selenium-treated products via a solvothermal seleniza

Hydrogen-bonding effects on the formation and lifetimes of charge-separated states in molecular triads.

Photoinduced electron transfer in two molecular triads comprised of a triarylamine donor, a d(6) metal diimine photosensitizer, and a 9,10-anthraquinone acceptor was investigated with particular focus on the influence of hydrogen-bonding solvents on the electron transfer kinetics. Photoexcitation of the ruthenium(II) and osmium(II) sensitizers of these triads leads to charge-separated states containing an oxidized triarylamine unit and a reduced anthraquinone moiety. The kinetics for formation of these charge-separated states were explored by using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy

Inelastic neutron scattering study of methyl groups rotation in some methylxanthines.

The three isomeric dimethylxanthines and trimethylxanthine are studied by neutron spectroscopy up to energy transfers of 100 meV at energy resolutions ranging from 0.7 microeV to some meV. The loss of elastic intensity with increasing temperature can be modeled by quasielastic methyl rotation. The number of inequivalent methyl groups is in agreement with those of the room temperature crystal structures. Activation energies are obtained. In the case of theophylline, a doublet tunneling band is observed at 15.1 and 17.5 microeV. In theobromine, a single tunneling band at 0.3 microeV is found. Or…

Intermolecular Interactions in Crystals Modulate Intramolecular Excited State Proton Transfer Reactions.

Proton transfer is a fundamental process underlying chemical and biological phenomena, and its dynamics are significantly influenced by the surrounding environment. This paper studies the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, which is crucial to the photostability of hydroxyanthraquinone-based pigments through efficient energy dissipation, by investigating how crystalline packing influences photoinduced proton transfer dynamics in single crystals of dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ) constitutional isomers. Comparing the proton transfer dynamics in crystalline and solution p

Biphasic Interfacial Transmission Enables DNA Storage in Liquid.

DNA is recognized to be a high-density storage medium for solving the global data storage crisis. From encoding to storage, massive information stored in synthetic DNA requires low-loss and high-speed transmission to a reliable preservation environment. Minimizing energy consumption remains a key challenge throughout this process. In this study, an aqueous biphasic interfacial transmission (BIT) pathway is established that enables simultaneous salt-decontaminated migration and anti-aging preservation, with a theoretically extrapolated half-life of up to 577 years at -20°C. Specific temperature

Orientation-Dependent Adsorption of Light Mercaptans on h‑BN Nanosheets: DFT Insights and Experimental Validation.

Creating an adsorbent that is both high-performing and cost-effective is essential for enhancing the adsorption-based removal of sulfur from fuels. This study investigates the adsorption mechanisms of light mercaptans (ethyl, propyl, and butyl) on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets using density functional theory (DFT), Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analyses. Energy minimization reveals the parallel configuration as the thermodynamically favored orientation, while the sideward arrangement demonstrates maximal adsorption affinity. The adsorp

Electrochemical investigation of the rate-limiting mechanisms for trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride reduction at iron surfaces.

The mechanisms involved in reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride (CT) and trichloroethylene (TCE) at iron surfaces were studied to determine if their reaction rates were limited by rates of electron transfer. Chronoamperometry and chronopotentiometry analyses were used to determine the kinetics of CT and TCE reduction by a rotating disk electrode in solutions of constant halocarbon concentration. Rate constants for CT and TCE dechlorination were measured as a function of the electrode potential over a temperature range from 2 to 42 degrees C. Changes in dechlorination rate constants

Unraveling the antioxidant and prooxidant mechanisms of methyl pro-lithospermate: a DFT and thermodynamic analysis in polar media.

CONTEXT: Methyl pro-lithospermate (MPL) is a phenolic acid isolated from Salvia yunnanensis with documented neuroprotective properties, yet its fundamental antioxidant and prooxidant mechanisms remain poorly characterized. Understanding the thermochemical basis of its radical-scavenging activity, the influence of heterodimer formation with bioactive phenolic compounds (zingerone (ZG), catechin (CT)), and its capacity to modulate redox-active metal ions is essential for evaluating its therapeutic potential. This study systematically investigates the thermodynamic descriptors governing the antio

Near-Field Photon Nernst Effect.

We consider the consequence of having nonreciprocal photon transfer between two surfaces with temperature gradient. We demonstrate that in a system consisting of graphene and a magneto-optical substrate separated by a gap, a transverse electric field is generated in graphene perpendicular to magnetic field and temperature gradient, in analogy to the Nernst effect. Such photon Nernst effect is driven by nonreciprocal Casimir force carried by photons. We show that the thermal efficiency of near-field photon Nernst effect is bounded by the Carnot limit, and nonreciprocal high-k modes are needed f

Preparation of gold/silver/titania trilayered nanorods and their photocatalytic activities.

Gold/silver/titania trilayered nanorods have been prepared by the successive deposition of silver and titania layers on gold nanorod cores, and their photocatalytic activities were investigated under visible-light illumination (λ > 420 nm). The photocatalytic activity of the trilayered nanorods in the oxidation of 2-propanol depends on both the Au/Ag composition and the thickness of the TiO2 shell. It increases with increasing Ag content up to [Au]/[Ag] = 1:5 (molar ratio) and then decreases with further increasing Ag content. The photocatalytic activity also increases with increasing TiO2 she

Combined proximal nerve graft and distal nerve transfer for a posterior cord brachial plexus injury.

The treatment of patients with prolonged denervation from a posterior cord brachial plexus injury is challenging and no management guidelines exist to follow. The authors describe the case of a 26-year-old man who presented to our clinic for treatment 11 months after suffering a high-energy injury to the posterior cord of the brachial plexus. A combined 9-cm proximal cable nerve graft procedure and a pronator branch to the posterior interosseous nerve transfer were performed. Satisfactory deltoid, triceps, wrist, and finger extensor recovery was noted 3 years after surgery. Patients with prolo

Reconstruction of a tibial defect with microvascular transfer of a previously fractured fibula.

A 43-year-old man sustained severe injuries to his lower limbs with extensive soft-tissue damage and bilateral tibial-fibular fractures. Acutely, the patient underwent external fixation and a free latissimus dorsi flap for soft-tissue coverage of the left leg. However, the tibia had a nonviable butterfly fragment that left a 7-cm defect after debridement. Subsequently, the contralateral fractured fibula was used as a bridging vascularized graft for this tibial defect. The transfer of a fibula containing the zone of injury from a previous high-energy fracture has not been reported. This case de

Principles and working mechanisms of water-filtered infrared-A (wIRA) in relation to wound healing.

Packing-accelerated consecutive NIR excitation (PACE) enables high energy photocatalysis and antitumor immunity in vivo.

Near-infrared (NIR) photocatalysis promises deep-tissue compatibilities but remains fundamentally constrained by two bottlenecks: insufficient photon energy and rapid charge recombination. Here, we report packing-accelerated consecutive excitation (PACE), a mechanism enabling low energy near-infrared (NIR) photons to drive high energy single electron transfer (SET) reactions. We design a self-assembling ruthenium complex, Ru-3, that forms densely packed nanoaggregates exhibiting aggregation-stabilized excited states, a pronounced excited state absorption band at ∼1315 nm, and nanosecond scale

Reliable Estimates of Power Delivery During Mechanical Ventilation Utilizing Easily Obtained Bedside Parameters.

BACKGROUND: Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) requires repetitive transfer of energy from the ventilator to the compromised lung. To understand this phenomenon, 2 sets of equations have been developed to partition total inflation energy into harmless and hazardous components using an arbitrary level of alveolar pressure as a threshold beyond which further energy increments may become damaging. One set of equations uses premeasured resistance and compliance as inputs to predict the energy that would be delivered by typical ventilator settings, whereas the other equation set uses observed ou

Prepatterned Superconducting Contacts for Clean Superconductor-Topological Material Interfaces Enabling Long-Range Josephson Coupling.

Phase-coherent superconducting proximity in topological materials (TMs) requires clean superconductor-topological material (SC-TM) interfaces, yet conventional top-contact fabrication often degrades them through oxidation, polymer residue, and process-induced disorder. Here we introduce a prepatterned superconducting bottom-contact architecture in which MoRe/Au electrodes are defined before van der Waals (vdW) crystal transfer, thereby avoiding on-flake lithography after transfer. In WTe2- and Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3-based Josephson junctions, this architecture yields systematically larger IcRN a
