[Hormone therapy of menopause and risk of breast cancer. Polemics and controversies].

The risk/benefit ratio of hormone replacement therapy in the post-menopause period remains controversial due to the risk of breast cancer and the effects of progesterone on mammary tissues. We analyzed the epidemiological data available to evaluate the risk of breast cancer in subjects taking replacement hormones. Oestrogen prescribed alone has not been reported to increase the relative risk of breast cancer compared with subjects not taking hormone therapy. Only elevated levels of conjugated oestrogens have been found to increase the relative risk although sufficient data is not available for

Modelling of parasitic populations: cestodes.

The philosophy of mathematical modelling as it applies to the epidemiology of cestode populations is reviewed. A model provides, via the "threshold theorem", a criterion for deciding in advance if a control programme can succeed in eradicating the parasite. In order to use this criterion it is necessary to have an estimate of the basic reproduction ratio, R0, which can only be obtained if reliable epidemiological data are available before the control programme is started. A model has been used to describe the population dynamics of Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena and Taenia ovis in

WHF Roadmap for Integrated Care in People Living with - or at Risk of - Cardiovascular Disease and Multiple Long-Term Conditions.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) commonly coexists with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC), including diabetes, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and mental health disorders. This clustering creates a syndemic burden associated with poorer outcomes, polypharmacy, high treatment burden, and rising healthcare costs. Fragmented, single-disease care models are ill-suited to address this complexity. The WHF roadmap for integrated care in people living with - or at risk of - CVD and MLTC provides a structured framework to support the design, implementation, and scale-up of person-centred, coordinated c

Gene-Environment Interactions in Autism Spectrum Disorders: The Role of Bisphenol A in Modulating Genetic Susceptibility.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition shaped by both genetic and environmental factors. While genetic studies have identified monogenic and polygenic contributions to ASD, growing evidence suggests that environmental exposures can modulate genetic susceptibility. Among these, bisphenol A (BPA), a widely studied endocrine-disrupting chemical, has drawn attention due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and placenta. BPA can influence neurodevelopment through epigenetic modifications, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Elevated BPA leve

LncRNA Gm16023 limits M1 macrophage-mediated hyperglycemia-exacerbated septic intestinal injury via miR-377-3p/Sirt1 axis.

Diabetes is closely associated with inflammation and sepsis, but its clinical significance and underlying mechanisms remain obscure. Leveraging epidemiological data from 404,184 individuals in the UK Biobank cohort, we found that hyperglycemia was significantly associated with increased sepsis risk. Phenotypically, hyperglycemia enhanced macrophage infiltration and exacerbated intestinal inflammation in both septic patients and murine models. Using both a genetic CD11b-DTR model and clodronate liposome-mediated chemical ablation, we demonstrated that macrophage depletion markedly attenuated hy

Dietary vitamin D and gastric cancer risk within the stomach cancer pooling (stop) project.

PURPOSE: The evidence regarding the role of vitamin D on gastric cancer (GC) is controversial. Within the Stomach cancer Pooling (StoP) Project, a global consortium of epidemiological studies on GC, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between dietary vitamin D and GC risk. METHODS: Five case-control studies were included in the analysis, accounting for 1875 cases and 5899 controls. Odds ratios (OR) of GC and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for tertiles of vitamin D intake were computed using logistic regression models adjusted for relevant confounders, including energy intak

Investigating the relationship among zinc status, blood manganese levels, and enzymatic markers of tissue damage: an epidemiological study using NHANES 2013-2016 data.

Manganese is an essential trace element required for various physiological processes. However, excessive exposure to this metal can lead to health issues. This study aims to evaluate whether adequate zinc intake can influence the relationship between blood manganese levels and markers indicating damage to the liver and other organs in populations using epidemiological data. We conducted a comprehensive analysis utilizing 2013-2016 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The findings indicated that blood manganese exhibits a significant positive association with

Genotype classification of Moraxella bovis using MALDI-TOF MS profiles.

Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) is regarded as a causative agent of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), the most common ocular disease of cattle. Recently, whole genome sequencing identified the presence of two distinct genotypes within M. bovis that differ in chromosome content, potential virulence factors, as well as prophage and plasmid profiles. It is unclear if the genotypes equally associate with IBK or if one is more likely to be isolated from IBK lesions. We utilized 39 strains of M. bovis that had previously undergone whole genome sequencing and genotype classification to determi

Developing a short-term prediction model for asthma exacerbations from Swedish primary care patients' data using machine learning - Based on the ARCTIC study.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to predict impending asthma exacerbations may allow better utilization of healthcare resources, prevention of hospitalization and improve patient outcomes. We aimed to develop models using machine learning to predict risk of exacerbations. METHODS: Data from 29,396 asthma patients was collected from electronic medical records and national registers covering clinical and epidemiological factors (e.g. comorbidities, health care contacts), between 2000 and 2013. Machine-learning classifiers were used to create models to predict exacerbations within the next 15 days. Model

A New Threat to Dopamine Neurons: The Downside of Artificial Light.

Growing awareness of adverse impacts of artificial light on human health has led to recognize light pollution as a significant global environmental issue. Despite, a large number of studies in rodent and monkey models of Parkinson's disease have reported that near infrared light has neuroprotective effects on dopaminergic neurons, recent findings have shown that prolonged exposure of rodents and birds to fluorescent artificial light results in an increase of neuromelanin granules in substantia nigra and loss of dopaminergic neurons. The observed detrimental effect seems to be dependent on a di

Understanding Enterovirus D68-Induced Neurologic Disease: A Basic Science Review.

In 2014, the United States (US) experienced an unprecedented epidemic of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68)-induced respiratory disease that was temporally associated with the emergence of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), a paralytic disease occurring predominantly in children, that has a striking resemblance to poliomyelitis. Although a definitive causal link between EV-D68 infection and AFM has not been unequivocally established, rapidly accumulating clinical, immunological, and epidemiological evidence points to EV-D68 as the major causative agent of recent seasonal childhood AFM outbreaks in the US. Fetal Origins of Hypertension.

Hypertension is a common noncommunicable disease. According to the World Health Organization, 1.13 billion people were suffering from hypertension in the year 2015. High blood pressure, hypertension, has a multifactorial etiology. Arterial atherosclerotic changes, systolic or diastolic dysfunction of the heart, and other noncardiac factors are involved. Epidemiological evidence has revealed that perinatal growth disturbance elevates the prevalence of hypertension. However, the specific effects of developmental disturbances on the pathological process of hypertension are poorly understood. Rece

Heterogeneity in schistosomiasis transmission dynamics.

Simple models of disease propagation often disregard the effects of transmission heterogeneity on the ecological and epidemiological dynamics associated with host-parasite interactions. However, for some diseases like schistosomiasis, a widespread parasitic infection caused by Schistosoma worms, accounting for heterogeneity is crucial to both characterize long-term dynamics and evaluate opportunities for disease control. Elaborating on the classic Macdonald model for macroparasite transmission, we analyze families of models including explicit descriptions of heterogeneity related to differenti

How should environmental exposure risk be assessed? A comparison of four methods for exposure assessment of air pollutions.

Methods commonly used to assess the environmental exposure risk at a location (e.g., proximity models) are usually based on different assumptions, leading to conflicting results and recommendations in epidemiological studies. In this case study, a comparative evaluation of the accuracy levels associated with four commonly used exposure risk estimate models [i.e., traditional proximity model (TPM), emission weighted proximity model (EWPM), the American Meteorological Society/EPA regulatory model (AERMOD), and ordinary kriging interpolation (OKI)] were conducted. Results show that at the annual

Birth insult interacts with stress at adulthood to alter dopaminergic function in animal models: possible implications for schizophrenia and other disorders.

Altered subcortical dopaminergic activity is thought to be involved in the pathophysiology of several disorders including schizophrenia, substance abuse and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Epidemiological studies have implicated perinatal insults, particularly obstetric complications involving fetal or neonatal hypoxia, as etiological risk factors for schizophrenia. This suggests the possibility that perinatal hypoxia might have lasting effects on dopaminergic function. In animal models, dopaminergic systems appears to be particularly vulnerable to a wide range of perinatal insults,

A noradrenergic and serotonergic hypothesis of the linkage between epilepsy and affective disorders.

Noradrenergic and/or serotonergic deficits, as well as other abnormalities, may contribute to predisposition to some epilepsies and depressions. Evidence for this hypothesis stems from several sources. Epidemiological investigations are intriguing but incomplete. Pharmacological studies show that noradrenergic and/or serotonergic transmission are both anticonvulsant and antidepressant. Therapeutically pertinent investigations show that antidepressant drugs have anticonvulsant properties, whereas antiepileptic drugs are effective in the management of affective disorders. Additional investigatio

Complex segregation analysis for obsessive compulsive disorder and related disorders.

Complex segregation analysis was applied to a sample of 107 Italian families with probands with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), using regressive logistic models to test for possible models of genetic transmission. We used two different phenotypic definitions of affection: 1) OCD; and 2) OCD plus Tourette's syndrome/chronic motor tics (CMT). Because of the potential relationship between OCD, Tourette's syndrome (TS), and other tic disorders, we considered these diagnoses to be determined by the same liability in subsequent steps of the analysis. For the 107 OCD families, the best fit was a

A serological survey for Babesia in cattle in Scotland. III. The rates of acquisition and loss of antibody to Babesia and their effects on observed levels of antibody incidence.

Data for age and the incidence of antibody to Babesia divergens in cattle from areas of high and low endemicity have been analysed using three simple epidemiological models to estimate the rates of gain and loss of antibody. The models adequately described the observations but did not allow for an increased recovery rate attributable to acquired immunity in older animals. The rate of loss of babesial antibody in the absence of challenge was estimated directly from data for age and the incidence of antibody in Irish bred cattle located in nonendemic areas of Scotland. These data suggested an an…

Sensor-based localization of epidemic sources on human mobility networks.

We investigate the source detection problem in epidemiology, which is one of the most important issues for control of epidemics. Mathematically, we reformulate the problem as one of identifying the relevant component in a multivariate Gaussian mixture model. Focusing on the study of cholera and diseases with similar modes of transmission, we calibrate the parameters of our mixture model using human mobility networks within a stochastic, spatially explicit epidemiological model for waterborne disease. Furthermore, we adopt a Bayesian perspective, so that prior information on source location can
