The paper summarizes the results of examination of 169 patients referred to the surgeon in the period from 1 till 47 days after medial facial (MF) trauma by using spiral computed tomography (SCT) and the method of laser stereolitography (LSLG). The actual aspects of diagnosis and treatment are marked; the methods for the analysis of injuries of soft tissue structures and adjacent areas while orbit trauma are developed together with the methods for determination of degree of enophthalmos. Also discussed are the possibilities of SCT and LSLG in visualization of MF injuries and planning patient t

OBJECTIVE: The middle cranial fossa approach has been used to explore and decompress the facial nerve in patients with Bell's palsy and facial nerve tumors. Unfortunately, this approach is technically challenging and has a significant risk of injury to the facial nerve and to the cochleovestibular organs. One way to minimize the risk may be with the use of the Sonopet Omni ultrasonic aspirator (Synergetics Inc., St Charles, MO) instead of an otologic drill.
METHODS: In this prospective study using cadaveric temporal bones, a total of 17 temporal bone specimens were used. Seven cadaveric tempo

We investigated the effects of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and some other BMPs on regeneration of peripheral motor nerves in vivo. The facial nerves of 24 New Zealand rabbits were crushed to examine a series of retrograde changes in the facial nuclei and axons, in what has been called the "axon reaction". The facial nerves of the experimental group were treated with epineurial coaptation and BMP-2 after the injury. Nerves not treated with BMP-2 were regarded as controls. The expression of BMP-2 was investigated by in situ hybridisation in the neurons of facial nuclei. The electrophysi

BACKGROUND: Surgery of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma presents an increased risk of facial nerve injury and a considerable re-recurrence rate.
METHODS: A series of 33 patients with first recurrence of pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland was analyzed. The data were derived from medical records as well as from interviews and clinical examinations of all living patients. Histologic material of the initial and recurrent tumor were reviewed.
RESULTS: Multifocal recurrence and carcinoma in pleomorphic adenoma were observed in 73% and 9% of patients, respectively. The incidence of permanent par

INTRODUCTION: It has been widely recognized that one of the major hazards during operation of the parotid gland, mainly in tumor resection, is the injury of the facial nerve. Facial nerve monitoring has achieved wide application in otologic and neurotologic procedures to help localization and protection of the facal nerve in the temporal bone.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors analyze localization and identification of 15 nerves in 15 patients who underwent parotid gland surgery in the Department of Ear Nose and Throat Diseases of the Medical University in Plovdiv from September 15, 2000 to D

Penetrating injuries affecting the parotid gland are relatively rare compared to injuries affecting other head and neck structures. Likewise, foreign bodies impacting the parotid gland are extremely rare. These foreign bodies can be secondary to penetrating injury or may reach the parotid gland by retrograde migration through Stensen's duct. Management of parotid gland foreign bodies is a challenging clinical situation for otolaryngologists due to the course of the facial nerve through the gland. In this article, a patient with penetrating parotid injury as a result of the explosion of a torpe

INTRODUCTION: On January 2011, Tunisia had known a revolution. To move from dictatorship to democraty project, the country suddenly fell into political instability, which was accompanied by a wave of social violence. Traumatology, and, particularly, maxilla-facial traumatology, is usually a reliable indicator of the degree of violence.
AIM: The aim of this study was to establish the epidemiological profile of facial fractures during the various phases of political transition through which Tunisia has passed since revolution (2012-2016).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional s

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the risk factors for facial fractures among homeless patients. We investigated the association between homelessness, mechanism of injury, and type of facial fracture in patients treated at an urban trauma center.
METHODS: Data for 2,221 adults with facial fractures were obtained retrospectively from a standardized registry of trauma patients at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital from 2011 to 2016. Associations between homelessness and mechanism of injury, facial fracture type, and surgical repair type were evaluated with multivariate multinomial logist

BACKGROUNDS: Parotid foreign bodies are not common. The majority of cases are caused by trauma. The clinical presentation, symptoms, and duration of discomfort vary among patients and may be challenging to treat.
CASE REPORT: In this report, we report a case of a 9-year-old male patient who presented with recurrent abscess formation at the site of a facial wound caused by a tree branch. Ultrasound examination confirmed the presence of a foreign body in the deep lobe of the parotid gland. The foreign body was eventually removed via endoscopic surgery.
DISCUSSION: The preferred treatment for p

Conventional hypoglossal-facial anastomosis and the interposition jump graft variation are the most popular techniques for facial nerve reconstruction resulting from proximal facial nerve injury. We present a modification of this technique, the hemi-hypoglossal facial intratemporal side to side anastomosis, which overcomes many of the failings of previous techniques. The method involves mobilization of the intratemporal facial nerve, which is anastomosed to a partially incised hypoglossal nerve. It is especially indicated in patients with multiple cranial nerve palsies.

BACKGROUND: Current literature suggests that blunt carotid injuries (BCIs) and vertebral artery injuries (BVIs) are more common than once appreciated. Screening criteria have been suggested, but only one previous study has attempted to identify factors that predict the presence of BCI/BVI. This current study was conducted for two reasons. First, we wanted to determine the incidence of BCI/BVI in our institution. Second, we wanted to determine the incidence of abnormal four-vessel cerebral angiograms ordered for injuries and signs believed to be associated with BCI/BVI and thus to determine whe
