Transportation-induced nausea-like behavior in goats and the effects of anti-motion sickness medication.

This study investigated the nausea-like behavior induced by road transportation in goats, and the effects of an anti-motion sickness (MS) medication on this behavior. In the first experiment, 11 adult Shiba goats were road transported twice with either a saline (control) or a commercial anti-MS medication (Travelmin) injection at the first or second transportation. Almost all goats showed nausea-like behavior, which was defined as pointing their heads downward, closing their eyes, and staying relatively still. These goats did not respond when they were touched during blood collection. The anti

Orthorexia nervosa and social media: A mixed-methods scoping review using a systematic methodology.

INTRODUCTION: Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as a preoccupation with abiding by a self-perceived healthy diet resulting in pathological thought, behavior and emotion. Social media platforms may add to this preoccupation with healthy eating by offering accessible exposure to food and dieting information. Yet, the precise nature of the association between ON and exposure to social media remains underexplored. The aim is to explore the existing literature on the relationship between social media and ON in a scoping search and to synthesize the findings. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Sc

Increasing dental professional awareness of disordered eating behaviours and oral health impacts in people living with severe obesity.

BackgroundPeople living with severe obesity are at an elevated risk of poor oral health. Contributing factors to poor oral health in this population group include cariogenic dietary behaviours and social determinants of health. There has been minimal discussion of the possible impacts of disordered eating behaviours on oral health particularly for those living with obesity.AimThis short communication aims to increase the awareness among dental teams of disordered eating behaviours and possible impacts on oral health particularly for patients living with obesity.MethodsA short evidence-based re

Muscularity Concerns and Disordered Eating Symptoms in Adult Women: A Network Analysis.

This study examined the role of muscularity concerns in eating disorder (ED) symptoms among a sample of women. We expanded on previous research by exploring a broader range of ED symptoms, including orthorexia (ON) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). Using network analysis, we analysed data from 308 adult women (18 years or older) who completed muscularity, disordered eating, and sociodemographic assessments. Our findings revealed five interconnected symptom communities reflecting traditional ED symptoms, such as eating concerns and shape and weight overvaluation. Notably, m

The role of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in anorexia nervosa.

The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a growth factor belonging to the neurotrophin family which plays a pivotal role in the differentiation, survival, and plasticity of neurons in the central nervous system. Evidence suggests that BDNF is an important signal molecule in the regulation of energy balance and thus implicated in body weight control. The discovery of BDNF-expressing neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus which is important in the regulation of energy intake, physical activity, and thermogenesis gives more evidence to the suggested participation of BDNF in eating beh

Difficulties with emotion regulation and weight/shape concerns as predictors of eating disorder behaviors among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with emotion regulation are a proposed key transdiagnostic factor of mental health difficulties, including eating disorders. However, it remains unclear whether difficulties with emotion regulation prospectively predict engagement in eating disorder behaviors. The current study examined whether difficulties with emotion regulation were associated with eating disorder behaviors after 1 year, in addition to weight and shape concerns. METHOD: A community sample of high school students (n = 3,074; 53.2% girls) completed self-report measures of eating behaviors, weight/sha

Effect of amount of high-fibre pellet in the diet and bedding type on feed intake, nutrient digestibility, eating behaviour and rumination in bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus).

Two studies were conducted to determine the impact of the amount of high-fibre pellet (HFP) in the diet and bedding material on feed intake, eating behaviour, rumination, activity and resting behaviour, and also nutrient digestibility in bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus). In Study 1, bongo were fed meadow hay (ad libitum), lucerne hay (0.5 kg/day), browse (0.7 kg/day) and a 'basal diet' containing 0.75 kg/day (low; LP), 1.50 kg/day (medium; MP) or 2.25 kg/day (high; HP) of HFP consisting mostly of insoluble fibre sources (dehydrated grass, dehydrated lucerne, wheat bran). Immunoinflammatory processes: Overlapping mechanisms between obesity and eating disorders?

Obesity and eating disorders are conditions that involve eating behaviors and are sometimes comorbid. Current evidence supports alterations in immunoinflammatory processes in both obesity and eating disorders. A plausible hypothesis is that immunoinflammatory processes may be involved in the pathophysiology of obesity and eating disorders. The aim of this review is to highlight the link between obesity and eating disorders, with a particular focus on immunoinflammatory processes. First, the relation between obesity and eating disorders will be presented, followed by a brief review of the liter

Body image and eating behaviors: A latent profile analysis.

Body image is multidimensional and less is known about how the combination of positive and negative body image relates to eating behaviors. We used a person-centered approach to identify profiles of body image and explore the relationship between profile membership, sex, age, race, and current marital status, and eating behaviors in a community sample of adults. We recruited 288 adults 18 and older living in the United States using Prolific Academic. Participants completed an online survey assessing body appreciation, functionality appreciation, body dissatisfaction, weight bias internalizatio

Sexuality, embodiment and attachment style in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Recent studies hypothesized that sexual dysfunctions represent not just complications of eating disorders (EDs), rather they should be attributed to the core psychopathology of these disorders. Therefore, disorders of the embodiment and insecure attachment may play a role in maintaining an abnormal sexual functioning, given their known relations with core ED features. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between sexual dysfunctions and both disorders of the embodiment and attachment style in people with anorexia nervosa (AN). METHODS: 111 adult women with AN and 1

Implicit attitudes toward eating stimuli differentiate eating disorder and non-eating disorder groups and predict eating disorder behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: The current study tested whether people with and without eating disorders (EDs) varied in their implicit attitudes toward ED-relevant stimuli. Additionally, the study tested whether implicit evaluations of ED-relevant stimuli predicted ED symptoms and behaviors over a 4-week interval. METHOD: Participants were people without EDs (N = 85) and people seeking treatment for EDs (N = 92). All participants completed self-report questionnaires and a version of the affect misattribution procedure (AMP) at baseline. The AMP indexed implicit evaluations of average body stimuli, eating stimul

Timing of supplementation alters grazing behavior and milk production response in dairy cows.

Offering feed supplements to grazing dairy cows results in substitution of pasture; however, previous data indicate that the time at which concentrate supplements are offered might affect the level of substitution. These data indicated that cows grazed more intensely presunset, regardless of the amount of supplement offered. It was, therefore, hypothesized that substitution rate would be less, and response to supplement greater if cows received their supplement at the p.m. rather than the a.m. milking. Forty-eight multiparous, nonpregnant, Holstein-Friesian cows, approximately 60 d in milk, we

A prevalence study and description of alli use by patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the frequency and characteristics of alli use among patients in eating disorder treatment facilities. METHOD: Patients from five treatment centers completed the Survey of Eating and Related Behaviors. Diagnoses were determined from survey responses. RESULTS: Of 417 survey respondents, 26 (6.2%) reported a history of alli use. Of those, 15 (57.7%) met criteria for an eating disorder, including one of 29 patients (3.4%) with anorexia nervosa binge-purge subtype, six of 66 patients (9.1%) with full or subthreshold bulimia nervosa, four of 49 (8.2%) with binge eati

[Eating disorders of infancy and early childhood].

Feeding problems are frequently observed among the population of infants and small children. This problems include food refusal, overeating, selective eating and bizarre food habits. That problems might be transient, but they may last for many years among some of children. They could lead to poor weight gain, specific nutritional deficiencies and even failure to thrive. In ICD-10 classification two diagnostic categories regarding eating disorders during this life period have been proposed (Eating disorders and Pica of infancy and early childhood). That criteria are too general though, they don

Attenuation of stress-induced anorexia in brown trout (Salmo trutta) by pre-treatment with dietary l-tryptophan.

The general consensus is that brain serotonin (5-HT) inhibits feed intake in teleost fishes and other vertebrates. Dietary manipulations with the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (TRP) have, however, yielded contradictory effects on feed intake, while studies of the endocrine response to stress indicate that the effects of TRP-enriched feed are context dependent. A characteristic behavioural response to stress is a reduction in feed intake, and in the present study we investigated whether pre-treatment with TRP-enriched feed affected stress-induced changes in feeding behaviour in brown trout (Salmo t

[Study of the categorization process among patients with eating disorders: a new cognitive approach to psychopathology].

Anorexic and bulimic patients have a highly distorted relationship with food and eating, even though they tend to be knowledgeable about diet and nutrition. The progress of this disease, as well as its complications and associated difficulties, are increasingly understood, while the etiopathogeny of eating disorders remains obscure. The approach that we are proposing involves the study of one of the most fundamental cognitive functions of human reasoning--the cognitive process of categorization. The purpose of this study is to understand the procedures used by these patients to construct repre

Discovery and pleiotropic effects of a "Feeding Circuit-Activating Peptide"-type neuropeptide in the mollusk Lymnaea stagnalis.

Neuropeptides play a central role in the regulation of animal physiology and behavior. Mollusks have been pivotal in the discovery of neuropeptide signaling, yet the diversity and functional roles of neuropeptides remain incompletely understood across the phylum. In this study, we identified and characterized a novel Feeding Circuit-Activating Peptide (FCAP)-type neuropeptide in the widely used molluscan model, the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis). Using mass spectrometry imaging (MSI), we detected a new peptide, ALDLSGGFNVHGW, which differs by a single amino acid from FCAPb (ALDLSGGFQVHGW
