The relationship between infant feeding types, gut microbiome, intestinal inflammation, and neurodevelopment in a neonatal piglet model.

BACKGROUND: The influences of nutrition on the infant's developing gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome, intestinal tract, and brain is unclear. Human milk (HM) is associated with beneficial immune and cognitive development compared with infant formula (IF). This study used a neonatal piglet model to determine the effects of infant feeding exposures (HM vs IF) on the GI microbiome, intestinal inflammation, and brain oligodendrocyte maturation. METHODS: Six pairs of piglets received HM or IF for 28 days. Fecal samples were collected weekly and GI regions (jejunum, ileum, and colon) and brains were

Differential sensitivity and specificity of Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae to adenine nucleotide phagostimulants-an all-or-none response?

BACKGROUND: The decision to imbibe a blood meal is predominantly dependent on the sensitivity and specificity of haematophagous arthropods to blood-derived adenine nucleotides, in particular adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Despite previous efforts to identify and characterise the specificity and sensitivity to ATP and other adenine nucleotides, as well as the role of other blood-derived phagostimulants across the Culicidae, comparisons across species remain difficult. METHODS: The feeding response of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti and the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae to ade

Development and clinical feasibility of a reduced-dose radiograph in children for feeding tube placement.

BACKGROUND: Temporary feeding tubes are commonly used but may lead to complications if malpositioned. Radiographs are the gold standard for assessing tube position, but clinician concern over radiation risks may curtail their use. OBJECTIVE: We describe development and use of a reduced dose feeding tube radiograph (RDFTR) targeted for evaluation of feeding tube position. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Age-based abdominal radiograph was adapted to use the lowest mAs setting of 0.32 mAs with field of view between carina and iliac crests. The protocol was tested in DIGI-13 line-pair plates and anthropo

Inhibition of mitochondrial fission and iNOS in the dorsal vagal complex protects from overeating and weight gain.

OBJECTIVES: The dorsal vagal complex (DVC) senses insulin and controls glucose homeostasis, feeding behaviour and body weight. Three-days of high-fat diet (HFD) in rats are sufficient to induce insulin resistance in the DVC and impair its ability to regulate feeding behaviour. HFD-feeding is associated with increased dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1)-dependent mitochondrial fission in the DVC. We investigated the effects that altered Drp1 activity in the DVC has on feeding behaviour. Additionally, we aimed to uncover the molecular events and the neuronal cell populations associated with DVC ins
