With Bated Breath: diagnosis of respiratory illness.

This essay recounts the author's experience of diagnosis of a rare respiratory condition in order to invite a broader reflection on the nature of diagnosis. Diagnosis is a pivotal moment in one's illness experience, and it can be viewed as both a closure of possibilities and an opening of new, unanticipated ones. The notion of anticipation is also important to the illness experience, in that anticipation and waiting characterize the illness experience generally--in waiting rooms, anticipating test results--as well as the change in one's attitude towards the future, which becomes fearsome in il

Developmental age strengthens barriers to ethanol accumulation in zebrafish.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) describes a wide range of phenotypic defects affecting facial and neurological development associated with ethanol teratogenicity. It affects approximately 1 in 100 children born in the United States each year. Genetic predisposition along with timing and dosage of ethanol exposure are critical in understanding the prevalence and variability of FASD. The zebrafish attributes of external fertilization, genetic tractability, and high fecundity make it a powerful tool for FASD studies. However, a lack of consensus of ethanol treatment paradigms has limited …

Fetal alcohol syndrome disorder pilot media intervention in New Jersey.

BACKGROUND: The New Jersey Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Task Force launched the âBe in the kNOwâ multimedia public education campaign in July 2006. The campaign continued until December 2006. OBJECTIVE: To report on the pilot media intervention campaign in Essex and Atlantic Counties, New Jersey, with the goal of identifying strategies to help prevent Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD). METHODS: The campaign used various media outlets from July 2006 to December 2006, including billboard posters along New Jersey transit routes serving Atlantic City and Newark, local newspapers and rad…

Fetal alcohol syndrome: does alcohol withdrawal play a role?

Alcohol use by a pregnant woman may interfere with the development of her fetus. Newborns whose mothers are intoxicated during delivery can experience withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors and even seizures. It is likely that withdrawal also can occur during fetal development. Thus, the possibility exists that withdrawal by the pregnant woman may exacerbate alcohol's adverse effects on her fetus. One potential mechanism through which alcohol withdrawal might damage the fetus involves the receptor for the neurotransmitter glutamate (i.e., the N-methyl-D-aspartate [NMDA] receptor). This receptor

[Outcome of children of alcoholic mothers (study of 105 cases followed to adult age) and various prophylactic findings].

Thirty years after recognition of the fetal alcohol syndrome, a study of 105 affected individuals who reached adulthood provides insight into the long-term outcome of this condition. The typical facial dysmorphism undergoes odd changes, often with a long face and a bulky nose and chin, in contrast to the appearance of affected infants. The growth failure becomes slightly less marked. The malformations, which occur in 3/4 of severe forms, increase the disability although function is sometimes better than expected. In contrast, the microcephaly becomes more pronounced. This explains the psychic

Facial effects of fetal alcohol exposure: assessment by photographs and morphometric analysis.

This study was designed to assess the limits of alcohol-related facial dysmorphogenesis. Standard full face and lateral facial photographs were obtained on 21 7-year-old children who had been exposed gestationally to known, heavy quantities of ethanol. Only two of these children had been previously considered to have definite fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Similar photographs of 21 other 7-year-old children with negligible gestational ethanol exposure were obtained for control purposes. Copies of the 42 photographs were given to each of seven expert clinicians who were asked to select any child

Fetal alcohol damage and schizophrenia.

The case of a 15 year old girl with fetal alcohol damage and schizophrenia is presented. Because fetal exposure to alcohol may produce brain damage, itself associated with increased vulnerability for schizophrenia, and because chronic exposure to alcohol may lead to a symptomatic schizophrenic illness, prospective study of children with fetal alcohol damage is needed to determine whether they are at greater risk for the later development of schizophrenia.

Altering Cell-Cell Interaction in Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Models: Insight on Cell-Adhesion Molecules During Brain Development.

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy disrupts the development of the brain and produces long lasting behavioral and cognitive impairments collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs). FASDs are characterized by alterations in learning, working memory, social behavior and executive function. A large body of literature using preclinical prenatal alcohol exposure models reports alcohol-induced changes in architecture and activity in specific brain regions affecting cognition. While multiple putative mechanisms of alcohol's long-lasting effects on morphology and behavior have been i…

Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and overall morbidities: a Danish nationwide cohort study from 1996 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure is harmful and can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. A systematic review and meta-analysis identified 428 comorbidities in individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, and reported pooled prevalence estimates. We aimed to investigate overall risk of morbidities in heavy prenatal alcohol-exposed children by estimating risk of the identified comorbidities, and previously unidentified diseases and health-related problems. METHODS: Our Danish nationwide register-based cohort study included all singleton births. Individuals were followed up…
