INTRODUCTION: Injuries causing fracture dislocation of shoulder and brachial plexus palsy are extremely rare. As per authors' knowledge, three part fracture of proximal humerus with shoulder dislocation and brachial plexus palsy has not been reported in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53 year old female sustained a three part fracture of right proximal humerus along with dislocation of shoulder joint and brachial plexus palsy following a fall from a flight of stairs. Fracture was managed by plating of proximal humerus and brachial palsy was followed up with electrodiagnostic studies and …

Spinal fractures associated with spinal cord injury rarely affect pregnant patients. The authors present the case of a 20-year-old woman in her 20(th) week of pregnancy, who suffered fracture-dislocation of the thoracic spine (T4-T5) and underwent decompression, reduction and posterior fusion with pedicle screws. Despite the complete spinal cord injury presented, the pregnancy progressed uneventfully and resulted in birth via normal delivery of a healthy newborn at term. Some particular features of this case, like the care needed in using ionizing radiation, the surgical approach and delivery,

The seat belt syndrome is a recognised complication of seat belt use in vehicles. Unstable Chance fractures of the spine without neurological deficits have been reported infrequently. We describe a young woman with completely disrupted Chance fracture of the second lumbar vertebra in association with left hemidiaphragmatic rupture/hernia, multiple bowel perforations, splenic capsular tear, left humeral shaft and multiple rib fractures. These injuries which resulted from high-speed vehicle collision and led to death of one of the occupants were readily detected by trauma series imaging. The pat

Irreducible isolated dislocation of the radial head is a rare injury. In this study, we describe a patient with irreducible dislocation of the radial head associated with an undisplaced fracture of the olecranon. A 6-year-old girl fell down while walking and suffered injury to the posterior aspect of the proximal ulnar shaft with the right elbow in a slightly flexed position. Plain radiographs of the elbow revealed an anterior-medial dislocation of the radial head and an undisplaced fracture of the olecranon. However, the attempted closed reduction was not successful. An open reduction was the

We report a case of a 27-year-old man who was involved in a high-speed car accident. He sustained multiple organ damage including multiple brain petechiae suggesting diffuse axonal damage, aortic dissection, retroperitoneal haematoma and a fracture-dislocation of the right hip with a femoral head fracture and an ipsilateral intertrochanteric fracture. Due to the general condition of the patient, physiological stabilisation was prioritized, and at 2 weeks the fracture-dislocation of the hip was treated with a proximal femoral nail for the intertrochanteric fracture and Herbert screws for the fe

OBJECTIVE: Gunshot wounds to the spine and/or sacrum rarely cause spinal instability. Our goal is to report the first case of a U-shaped sacral fracture and lumbosacral dislocation caused by a gunshot injury to the spine.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old man sustained a close-range shotgun wound to the abdomen. The blast partially destroyed the L4 and L5 vertebral bodies and fractured the S1 and S2 segments of the spine, resulting in severe neurological deficits with lumbosacral and spinopelvic instability.
INTERVENTION: Debridement of devitalized tissues, proper antibiotic coverage, dec

There have been very few reports in the literature of management of thoracolumbar fracture dislocations in very young children. The following is a presentation of one of these rare cases that was treated using a closed reduction method that has been little described in the medical literature. A 14-month-old child suffered a fracture dislocation at T(12)-L(1) from nonaccidental trauma. The patient was neurologically intact upon admission. Treatment consisted of closed manual reduction and hyperextension casting under sedation. At 22-month follow-up, the patient displayed excellent clinical and …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate surgical results of the titanium screw-plate internal fixation in treatment of the lower cervical fracture dislocation.
METHODS: From September 2001 to March 2006, 31 patients (24 males, 7 females; age range, 20-63 years) with the lower cervical fracture dislocation were treated in our department. The injuries were caused by a road accident in 25 patients, a high crash in 4, and a heavy object crash in 2. The fracture dislocation occurred in the following cervical segments: C3 (1 patient), C1 (5 patients), C5 (12 patients), C6 (10 patients), and C7 (3 patients). The dis…

The long-term prognosis after open reduction of neglected posterior hip dislocations is poor; as such, primary arthroplasty is recommended by a number of authors. We present a patient with a 5-month-old posterior hip dislocation with concomitant paralysis of the sciatic nerve who had an open reduction. At a follow-up of 3.5 years, the patient has normal function with no signs of arthrosis. Magnetic resonance imaging scans, however, revealed partial avascular necrosis of the femoral head. A discussion based on the literature shows the uniqueness of this case.
