Multicentric malignant glioma with striking morphologic heterogeneity and early and extensive metastatic spread to the bone.

We document the case of a young adult female patient who presented with multiple intracerebral and extracerebral bone lesions, the latter most prominently along the vertebral column. The spatially distinct intracerebral lesions included a superficial frontal tumor nodule as well as diffuse enlargement of the pons. Differential diagnoses ranged from neoplastic to inflammatory conditions. Repeated bone biopsies yielded uncharacteristic reactive changes whereas cerebrospinal fluid cytology pointed towards a neoplastic disease. Resection of the superficial frontal tumor nodule prompted the diagnos

Frontal Ostium Grade (FOG): A New Computer Tomography Grading System for Endoscopic Frontal Sinus Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: The location and size of the frontal sinus ostium are critical in determining surgical difficulty. The more anterior the ostium, the more difficult is the surgical access. We propose a novel computed tomography (CT) grading specific to the anatomical position of the frontal ostium. STUDY DESIGN: Observational study followed by a prospective part. SETTINGS: Tertiary rhinology practice. SUBJECT AND METHODS: On a specified sagittal CT cut, a vertical line was drawn through the posterior edge of the frontal process of the maxilla (frontal buttress/beak) along its vertical axis (refer

[Familial infantile cortical hyperostosis (Caffey's disease) with osteolytic lesions of the skull].

BACKGROUND: The parietal and frontal bones are rarely affected in infantile cortical hyperostosis. CASE REPORTS: Case n. 1: A 14-day-old boy developed a swelling of the left eyelid that extended to the face in a few days. It was tender and associated with fever. Laboratory findings were increased (RBC sedimentation rate and other signs of inflammation). CT scan of the sinuses, soft tissues and bones was normal, but at the age of 23 days minimal patches of rarefaction were seen on X-rays of the frontal bones. These lacunar areas gradually extended, with the inflammation persisted. A new CT sca…

A case of unilateral coronal synostosis in a child with craniofacial microsomia.

Craniofacial microsomia is a congenital malformation complex associated with a wide array of craniofacial and extracraniofacial anomalies. Frontal plagiocephaly has been shown to occur in approximately 5% to 12% of patients with craniofacial microsomia. The etiology of craniofacial microsomia-associated frontal plagiocephaly is unclear; of the cases described in the literature, all but one had physical findings suggestive of deformational plagiocephaly. In the case with equivocal physical findings, radiographic studies showed no evidence of craniosynostosis. Unlike the above cases, we report a

[Morphometric characteristics and correlation interdependence of the lacrimal sac fossa and nasolacrimal canal in cerebral and facial parts of the skull of various shape].

Morphometric characteristics of lacrimal sac fossa (LSF) and nasolacrimal canal (NLC) were studied in 105 macerated skulls of humans of mature age. Extreme shape variants were detected for LSF and NLC inferior foramen. The peculiarities of topographic-anatomical relations of NLC with the neighboring structures of nasal cavity were established. Morphometric characteristics of LSF and NLC were found to be largely determined by the shapes of facial part of the skull, nasal cavity and orbit, and to a lesser extent by the shape of cerebral part of the skull. Some variants of LSF and NLC topographic

Zygomatic bone fractures complicated by retrobulbar haemorrhage.

The two patients described in this report demonstrate retrobulbar haemorrhage as a complication of zygomatic bone fracture. Successful treatment of this rare but very serious complication involves urgent consultation with an ophthalmology service, and immediate medical and surgical management. It is extremely important to check the vision of patients with zygomatic bone fracture, before and after surgery, and consideration should be given to obtaining an ophthalmology opinion for all fractures involving the orbit. A simple examination, which every dentist should be able to perform, should incl

Frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles.

Frontoethmoidal meningoencephaloceles constitute a well-defined clinical entity with remarkable epidemiologic peculiarities, being very prevalent in Southeast and Southern Asia, but relatively rare in Western Europe, Japan, Australia, and North America. They do not show an increased risk of recurrence in siblings and offspring, unlike other cephaloceles and neural tube defects generally, from which they should be distinguished. Combined craniofacial and neurosurgical operative treatment permits one-stage correction of the whole deformity, the associated hypertelorism being reduced by selective

The use of a temporal osteoperiosteal flap for the reconstruction of malar hypoplasia in Treacher Collins syndrome.

The clinical use of a temporal periosteal bone flap for the reconstruction of a malar bone in a patient with the Treacher Collins syndrome is presented. The temporal muscle functions as an axial carrier of the periosteum that induces osteogenesis in young children, whereas the bone segments may serve as a nucleus for further bone formation from the periosteum. Correction of the eyelid coloboma was obtained by the rotation and advancement of a temporopalpebral flap.

Use of cyanoacrylate in facial bone fractures.

It is not uncommon to encounter multiple bone fragments during open reduction of facial bone fractures. When these fragments are few and their size large, there is no problem. However, multiple, small, and thin bone fragments are difficult to handle, making accurate reduction with interfragmentary wires problematic. This is frequently encountered in fractures of the anterior maxillary wall, orbital floor, orbital roof, and frontal sinus. Therefore, many surgeons reconstruct the larger segments and discard the smaller segments. In this study, 10 patients who sustained facial fractures with mult

Subpericranial and epidural abscess with skull osteomyelitis as a complication of microneedling for alopecia: A singular case report.

BACKGROUND: Subpericranial hematoma (SPH) is unusual in adults and is usually seen in neonates as cephalohematoma. Closed scalp hematoma is usually not associated with infection and abscess formation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28-year-old male presented with complaints of swelling on the left forehead. The patient at that time was on self-treatment for alopecia following a routine of application of minoxidil hair spray followed by microneedling with his derma roller. Radiological evaluation revealed a mass in the left frontal scalp region and communicating through frontal bone defect with mass in t…

Endoscopic ultrasonic dacryocystorhinostomy for recurrent dacryocystitis following rhinoplasty.

UNLABELLED: The lacrimal sac is the structure most vulnerable to injury when performing rhinoplastic osteotomies. When performed in a low lateral position or along the frontal process of the frontal-maxillary suture, osteotomies can potentially tear the medial canthal tendon and injure the underlying lacrimal sac, possibly resulting in dacryocystitis. In this case report, the authors discuss a case of dacryocystitis following primary rhinoplasty; this injury was repaired with endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) using a Sonopet ultrasonic bone aspirator (Stryker, Kalamazoo, Michigan) at a si

Wide reconstruction of the anterior cranial base with bipedicled galeopericranial flap.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of facial bone fractures complicated by frontal sinus destruction must seal off the cranial cavity from the upper respiratory tract to avoid ascending infections of the intracranial contents. METHODS: We used a bipedicled galeopericranial flap for reconstruction of the extradural and subcutaneous spaces of the frontal region, which were infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) following unsuccessful coverage of the anterior cranial base with an anteriorly based pericranial flap. RESULTS: The patient healed uneventfully without infection. CO

Two cases of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Two cases of nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome were reported with a review of pertinent literature. The first case was a 59-year-old man, whose autopsy was warranted. Signs and symptoms manifested in this case were basal cell carcinoma, generalized multiple nevi, multiple cysts in the jaws and long bones, pits in the palm and sole, frontal and occipital bossing, ossification of the falx cerebri, a bifid rib, renal fibroma and a patent foramen ovale. The family history revealed a hereditary predisposition as to the syndrome. The patient in the second case included basal cell carcinoma, multi

Altered cumulative joint moments and increased joint moment symmetry during sit-to-stand transitions for transfemoral bone-anchored limb users: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Sit-to-stand transitions are demanding activities for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation. Movement asymmetries during sit-to-stand place greater stresses on the intact limb joints compared to the amputated limb joints, potentially contributing to musculoskeletal overuse injury and pain. Bone-anchored limbs address socket-related prosthesis issues, but their impact on cumulative joint moments during sit-to-stand is yet to be fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in cumulative joint moments and moment symmetry during sit-to-stand transitio
