Correlation between focal brain metabolism and higher brain function in patients with Moyamoya disease.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease is one of the causes of higher brain dysfunction in younger patients. Fortunately, it may be possible to protec … positive correlations with the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in the lower part of the bilateral frontal lobe, the right anterior temporal lobe, and the medial occipital lobe. The verbal intelligence quotient was significantly and positively correlated with the cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen in the left inferior frontal lobe, including Broca's area. Infa …

Combining three-phase EEG pattern and ipsilateral isolated eye deviation to predict seizure focus in the frontal interhemispheric fissure.

OBJECTIVE: Identification of seizure focus on the interhemispheric fissure (IHF) is often challenging at the step of scalp video-EEG monitoring on preoperative evaluations. We previously reported ictal three-phase EEG patterns (3Ph-EEG) and isolated eye deviation (isolated ED) to side of the seizure focus during seizures, each of which is available for identifying the seizure focus for frontal IHF (F-IHF). This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of predicting the F-IHF focus using a combination of 3Ph-EEG and isolated ED in patients with frontal lobe epilepsy and the accuracy of predicting l…

Altered resting-state brain activity in major depressive disorder comorbid with subclinical hypothyroidism: A regional homogeneity analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD), a common mental disorder worldwide, frequently coexists with various physical illnesses, and recent studies have shown an increased prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo) among MDD patients. However, the neural mechanisms shared and unique to these disorders and the associated alterations in brain function remain largely unknown. This study investigated the potential brain function mechanisms underlying comorbid MDD and SHypo. METHOD: Thirty MDD patients (non-comorbid group), 30 MDD patients comorbid with SHypo (comorbid group), 26 patien

Modulation of pulvinar connectivity with cortical areas in the control of selective visual attention.

Selective attention mechanisms operate across large-scale cortical networks by amplifying behaviorally relevant sensory information while suppressing interference from distractors. Although it is known that fronto-parietal regions convey information about attentional priorities, it is unclear how such cortical communication is orchestrated. Based on its unique connectivity pattern with the cortex, we hypothesized that the pulvinar, a nucleus of the thalamus, may play a key role in coordinating and modulating remote cortical activity during selective attention. By using a visual task that ortho

Greater functional connectivity between the ventral frontal cortex and occipital cortex in herpes zoster patients than post-herpetic neuralgia patients.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare whole brain network between herpes zoster (HZ) patients and post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) patients, as well as to investigate the associations between whole brain network changes and pain intensity and the accuracy of classifying between different types of pain. METHODS: PHN patients (n = 50) and HZ patients (n = 50) and healthy controls (HCs) (n = 50) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Functional connectivity and global and local graph theory metrics were calculated by using Dosenbach-160 atlas. The relationship bet

Within the framework of the dual-system model, voluntary action is central to cognition.

A new version of the dual-system hypothesis is described. Consistent with earlier models, the improvisational subsystem of the instrumental system, which includes the occipital cortex, inferior temporal cortex, and medial temporal cortex, especially the hippocampus, directs the construction of visual representations of the world and constructs ad-hoc responses to novel targets. The habit system, which includes the occipital cortex; parietal cortex; premotor, supplementary motor, and ventrolateral areas of frontal cortex; and the basal ganglia, especially the caudate nucleus, encodes sequences

Statistical analysis of sleep spindle occurrences.

Spindles - a hallmark of stage II sleep - are a transient oscillatory phenomenon in the EEG believed to reflect thalamocortical activity contributing to unresponsiveness during sleep. Currently spindles are often classified into two classes: fast spindles, with a frequency of around 14 Hz, occurring in the centro-parietal region; and slow spindles, with a frequency of around 12 Hz, prevalent in the frontal region. Here we aim to establish whether the spindle generation process also exhibits spatial heterogeneity. Electroencephalographic recordings from 20 subjects were automatically scanned to

Human fronto-parietal and parieto-hippocampal pathways represent behavioral priorities in multiple spatial reference frames.

We represent behaviorally relevant information in different spatial reference frames in order to interact effectively with our environment. For example, we need an egocentric (e.g., body-centered) reference frame to specify limb movements and an allocentric (e.g., world-centered) reference frame to navigate from one location to another. Posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is vital for performing transformations between these different coordinate systems. Here, we review evidence for multiple pathways in the human brain, from PPC to motor, premotor, and supplementary motor areas, as well as to stru

Pick's disease: a clinical overview.

What is to be understood by the term Pick's disease? Is this a clinical syndrome(s) of frontotemporal lobar atrophy, or a more specific clinicopathological concept of frontotemporal lobar atrophy with Pick bodies and/or Pick cells on neuropathology? The author discusses these concepts in an historical context as an introduction to this symposium.

Differential diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia: Pick's disease.

Recognition of frontotemporal degeneration has been an important clinical and neuropathological advance. However, the clinical pathological correlates within this group present a major challenge. An EU-funded consortium has examined a retrospective series of neuropathologically confirmed Pick's disease cases to explore potential clinical diagnostic features. From these, draft clinical criteria have been developed.

Self-grasping: a focal neurological sign.

A physical sign is described in patients with typical bilateral grasp responses, whereby one hand grasps the contralateral forearm (self-grasping). Of 37 patients with strong bilateral grasp responses, unilateral self-grasping occurred in 8; of these 8 patients, 7 were hemiparetic and 5 showed extinction of double simultaneous stimulation. Two patients had bilateral self-grasping, and 27 avoided self-grasping. In contrast, only 4 of the 27 patients without self-grasping were hemiparetic and 1 had associated sensory extinction. In 2 confused, uncooperative patients, unilateral self-grasping was

The Neural Bases of Drawing. A Meta-analysis and a Systematic Literature Review of Neurofunctional Studies in Healthy Individuals.

Drawing is a multi-component process requiring a wide range of cognitive abilities. Several studies on patients with focal brain lesions and functional neuroimaging studies on healthy individuals demonstrated that drawing is associated with a wide brain network. However, the neural structures specifically related to drawing remain to be better comprehended. We conducted a systematic review complemented by a meta-analytic approach to identify the core neural underpinnings related to drawing in healthy individuals. In analysing the selected studies, we took into account the type of the control t

Intensive neuromonitoring for complex partial seizures: focal seizure pattern variability in surgical patients.

Intensive neuromonitoring of seizure surgery candidates, with its associated medication withdrawal, involves increased seizure susceptibility. This can cause a confusing array of seizure patterns. This problem was examined in the candidates for seizure surgery in the Austin Hospital Comprehensive Epilepsy Programme, emphasis being placed on focal seizures. Generalized seizures were very common. Eleven (15%) patients showed multiple focal seizure patterns. Seven patients showed temporal lobe seizures originating from either side separately. Three showed persistent frontal and temporal complex p

[Agyria--a clinico-pathological study (author's transl)].

Agyria is an extremely rare malformation of the brain caused by an arrest of neuronal migration towards the cortex. A case of nearly complete agyria is presented in a 2 8/12 year-old boy. The autopsy revealed complete absence of cerebral convolutions in the frontal, parietal and occipital lobes of both hemispheres and discrete convolutions in the temporal lobes. The cortex reached up to 22 mm and the central white matter was very thin, occipitally up to 2 mm. Additionally, hydrocephalus internus was observed. Clinical and pathoanatomical findings are presented and compared with other data publ
