BACKGROUND: We report the real-world distribution of glaucoma types and glaucoma surgeries in each age or sex group in our department.
METHODS: The department database of Matsue Red Cross Hospital, a tertiary care hospital, for eyes surgically treated to manage glaucoma between April 2014 and March 2018 was searched. Patient age, sex, disease type, and surgical procedure were collected from the database. SIGNIFICANCE: Patients with pigment dispersion syndrome are frequently encountered in clinical practice. Iris abnormalities and the absence of key features of pigment dispersion syndrome can guide the discovery of secondary causes of pigmentary glaucoma, such as peripheral iris pigment epithelial cysts.

PURPOSE: To qualitatively analyze anterior chamber structures imaged by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in primary angle-closure patients.
METHODS: Subjects diagnosed as primary angle-closure suspect (PACS), primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG), and previous acute primary angle closure (APAC) were recruited prospectively along with a group of normal controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IOP changes in the unoperated fellow eyes of 107 patients who underwent trabeculectomy in 1 eye for high-tension glaucoma (48 primary open-angle glaucoma, 43 pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, and 16 narrow-angle glaucoma) were evaluated during the early postoperative period. We present a report on a patient with acute glaucoma. Slit-lamp-adapted optical coherence tomography (SL-OCT) confirmed a pupillary block due to a claw lens. After laser iridectomy the situation stabilized. Thus, SL-OCT allows non-invasive, high-resolution imaging in acute angle-closure glaucoma and may be helpful with the differential diagnosis of pupillary block glaucoma and the documentation of the surgical result.

Since the last report on eye disease in Western Samoa in 1959 by Dr. Elliott, the population has increased from 97,000 to 158,000. The country now has a full-time ophthalmologist but could benefit from a larger eye care service. The distribution of disease is very similar to that found in 1959, with pterygium, cataract and injuries comprising the most frequent eye problems. Acute angle-closure glaucoma is much more common than open-angle glaucoma and is associated with a plateau iris configuration.

PURPOSE: To detect nondiagnostic hypotony maculopathy by OCT III after filtration surgery.
METHODS: After surgery, patients with intraocular pressure less than 9 mmHg were submitted to OCT III examination.
RESULTS: Seven (87.50%) patients with previous diagnosis of open angle glaucoma and one (12.50%) of them with acute angle closure glaucoma. Two patients (25.00%) presented hypotony maculopathy on OCT III examination.
CONCLUSION: OCT III examination seems to be a good diagnostic method to detect subclinical hypotony maculopathy after filtration surgery.

Most cases of chronic open-angle glaucoma can be treated medically. When medical management is ineffective, laser trabeculoplasty is usually performed.
