Anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (ALCL) was first described in 1985 by Stein et al and is a clinically, morphologically, and immunophenotypically heterogeneous neoplasm characterized by ALK expression, rearrangement of the ALK gene, and most characteristically its occurrence in children. Clinically, cutaneous ALK+ ALCL can be divided into primary (cutaneous forms) and the much more common, secondary dissemination by a systemic lymphoma. Systemic ALK+ ALCL represents 10%-15% of childhood non-Hodgkin lymphoma and generally presents with advanced systemic disease. Here, we describe a case of a 9-ye

The aim is to discuss four cases of gingival reactive hyperplastic lesions in patients with a history of excision of oral neoplastic lesions and rehabilitation by a free revascularized flap of the iliac crest. One female and 3 male patients were referred due to the presence of exophytic lesions at the rehabilitated sites. The clinical examination revealed that the poor oral hygiene was the common trigger factor in all the cases, in addition to trauma from the upper left second molar in the first case, pericoronitis related to a partially erupted lower right third molar in the third case, and p

Previous reports have described structural airway abnormalities in children with non-cystic fibrosis chronic supportive lung disease as well as obliterative membranes in the major bronchi of cystic fibrosis patients. The putative paradigm proposed in the evolution of these membranes invokes intense inflammation resulting in granulation tissue and neovascularization with the formation of pyogenic granuloma and eventually fibrosis. Our series of four cases widens the spectrum of conditions that may be conducive to large airway obliteration to include non-suppurative chronic infections and possib

INTRODUCTION: Although pilomatrixomas are frequently encountered by dermatologists and pathologists in the differential diagnosis of head and neck lesions, this is not usually the case among head and neck surgeons. A pilomatrixoma (calcifying epithelioma of Malherbe) is a benign tumour of the hair matrix cells. Histologically it is characterised by the presence of ghost cells, basophilic cells and foreign body cells. It may sometimes be difficult to histologically distinguish it from its malignant counterpart, the pilomatrix carcinoma. We report an interesting case of an ulcerated pilomatrixom

Cutaneous epithelioid angiomatous nodule (CEAN) represents a rare, benign vascular lesion described by Brenn and Fletcher in 2004. To the best of our knowledge, the development of CEAN in a pre-existing vascular malformation has not been previously reported. A 52-year-old Japanese woman presented with multiple erythematous papules developed on violaceous macule of the right back that had been diagnosed as capillary malformation (CM) in childhood. Histopathological examination of one erythematous papule revealed a relatively well-circumscribed nodule composed mostly of epithelioid cells in the

BACKGROUND: Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) protein is expressed during angiogenesis and malignant transformation of endothelial cells and can be helpful to distinguish between proliferative and malformative vascular lesions.
METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively 117 vascular neoplasms and 50 vascular malformations. Vascular neoplasms included infantile hemangioma (n = 87), noninvoluting congenital hemangioma (n = 5), rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma (n = 3), tufted angioma (n = 8), pyogenic granuloma (n = 13), and spindle cell hemangioma (n = 1). Vascular malformations were lymphatic malformatio

BACKGROUND: Although urachal remnants are very rare, dermatologists must be aware of them in order to ensure suitable treatment by urologists. Lack of appropriate treatment exposes patients to the risks of recurrent infectious complications or degeneration to vesical adenocarcinoma.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old man consulted for mild and recurring umbilical weeping for approximately 1 year. He had previously undergone unsuccessful treatment, comprising application of liquid nitrogen and of silver nitrate to an umbilical lesion measuring several millimetres regarded as pyogenic granuloma. Aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma (ADPAca) is a rare, underreported, and often misdiagnosed malignant tumor of the sweat glands most commonly occurring in males in their fifties to seventies. We report two cases of ADPAca with important clinical implications. A 54-year-old man presented 3 years after digit amputation for ADPAca with new blue nodules on his arm, lymphadenopathy, and a lung nodule; he was diagnosed with and treated for metastatic ADPAca. He underwent chemotherapy, but died 4 months later. A 15-year-old boy presented with an enlarging tumor on his finger occurring after

BACKGROUND: Excisional biopsies of gingival overgrowths, performed with safety margins, frequently result in mucogingival defects. These defects may produce esthetic problems and increase the chances of dentin hyperesthesia and its possibility of hindering oral hygiene.
METHODS: Two clinical cases are reported in which gingival overgrowths were removed by excisional biopsy, resulting in unsightly defects. The first clinical case presents an invasive approach for the treatment of a recurrent pyogenic granuloma in the anterior maxilla, and the second depicts a complete removal of a peripheral o

The last few years, new therapies targeting the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) have shown their efficacy in the treatment of several types of cancer. Monoclonal antibodies against the EGFR (e.g. cetuximab, panitumumab) or EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (e.g. gefitinib, erlotinib) are generally well tolerated and do not have the severe systemic side-effects usually seen with cytotoxic drugs. A considerable number of patients treated with these EGFR inhibitors, however, develop dermatological side-effects, most frequently an acneiform eruption but also xerosis, eczema, fissures, telang

Hemangioma, the most common tumor of infancy, is characterized by rapid growth and slow regression. Increased mRNA expression of insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) has been detected in the proliferating phase by cDNA microarray analysis, but the underlying mechanism causing the increase remains unknown. Here, using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and immunohistochemistry, we show that IGF2 is highly expressed in both proliferating and involuting phase hemangioma, but is not detectable in other vascular lesions such as pyogenic granuloma, venous malformation, lymphatic m

The flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye laser (FPDL) was the first laser system specifically developed for the treatment of cutaneous vascular lesions such as port-wine stains (PWS), telangiectases and haemangiomas. Its theoretical advantages have been verified by numerous excellent clinical results. As there are few systematic studies on the adverse effects of this laser system, we investigated 100 consecutive patients who received FPDL therapy of PWS. Pain during and after laser therapy was a common complaint. Post-treatment erythema occurred in 29%, oedema in 73%, formation of bullae in 1%, and ser

AIMS: The effectiveness of instillation of mitomycin C eyedrops on the recurrence rate of pterygium was assessed in patients undergoing primary pterygium surgery. Any side effects were also noted.
METHODS: Primary pterygia in 38 consecutive patients were surgically excised during July to December 1992. After surgery, mitomycin C 0.02% eyedrops twice daily for 5 days as well as dexamethasone 0.1% four times tapered for the next 6 weeks were instilled. Postoperative follow up ranged from 6 to 11 months.
RESULTS: In one patient the pterygium recurred after 3 months (recurrence rate 2.6%). The s

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is a new clinicopathological entity defined as a pseudo-neoplastic capillary proliferation secondary to an opportunistic infection by one of two Rochalimaea sp.: R. quintana or R. henselae. Although BA is a recently recognised entity, numerous cases have been reported. Most of the patients affected are reported to have low absolute CD4 lymphocyte counts associated with AIDS. Yet, very few oral cases associated or not with cutaneous lesions have been reported or simply identified. Histopathological and ultrastructural features of one case of oral BA with gingival and

Vascular anomalies represent a diverse group of disorders of abnormal vascular development or proliferation. Vascular anomalies are classified as vascular tumors and vascular malformations. Significant advances have been made in the understanding of the pathogenesis, natural history, and genetics of vascular anomalies, allowing for improvements in management including targeted molecular therapies. Infantile hemangiomas are the most common vascular tumor of childhood and follow a distinct natural history of proliferation and involution. Although benign, infantile hemangiomas can be associated w

Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs) are inherited, genetic disorders. The majority of PIDs are diagnosed in infancy or early childhood, but manifestation in adulthood may also occur. Frequent, recurrent and prolonged infections, which respond poorly to treatment may be heralding signs. PID patients may have increased suspectibility to infections, that mostly affect the sino-pulmonary and intestinal tracts and the skin. PIDs are also frequently associated with autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Cutaneous manifestations affect 40% to 70% of patients with diagnosed PID. Bacterial and fun
