Dynamic testing of learning potential in adults with cognitive impairments: A systematic review of methodology and predictive value.

Dynamic testing includes procedures that examine the effects of brief training on test performance where pre- to post-training change reflects patients' learning potential. The objective of this systematic review was to provide clinicians and researchers insight into the concept and methodology of dynamic testing and to explore its predictive validity in adult patients with cognitive impairments. The following electronic databases were searched: PubMed, PsychINFO, and Embase/Medline. Of 1141 potentially relevant articles, 24 studies met the inclusion criteria. The mean methodological quality s

Common Secondary and Tertiary Structural Features of Aptamer-Ligand Interaction Shared by RNA Aptamers with Different Primary Sequences.

Aptamer selection can yield many oligonucleotides with different sequences and affinities for the target molecule. Here, we have combined computational and experimental approaches to understand if aptamers with different sequences but the same molecular target share structural and dynamical features. NEO1A, with a known NMR-solved structure, displays a flexible loop that interacts differently with individual aminoglycosides, its ligand affinities and specificities are responsive to ionic strength, and it possesses an adenosine in the loop that is critical for high-affinity ligand binding. NEO2

Impaired Recognition of Static and Dynamic Facial Emotions in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Stimuli of Varying Intensities, Different Genders, and Age Ranges Faces.

A multitude of research on facial emotion recognition (FER) in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have been published since several years. However, these studies have mainly used static high intensity stimuli, including adult and/or children facial emotions. This current study investigated FER in children with ASD using an innovative task, composed of a combination of static (114 pictures) and dynamic (36 videos) subtests, including children, adolescent, and adult male and female faces, with high, medium, and low intensity of basic facial emotions, and neutral expression. The ASD group consisted

Rapid acquisition of dynamic control over DLPFC using real-time fMRI feedback.

It has been postulated that gaining control over activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a key region of the working memory brain network, may be beneficial for cognitive performance and treatment of certain psychiatric disorders. Several studies have reported that, with neurofeedback training, subjects can learn to increase DLPFC activity. However, improvement of dynamic control in terms of switching between low and high activity in DLPFC brain states may potentially constitute more effective self-regulation. Here, we report on feasibility of obtaining dynamic control over DLP

Dynamic knee valgus alignment influences impact attenuation in the lower extremity during the deceleration phase of a single-leg landing.

Dynamic knee valgus during landings is associated with an increased risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. In addition, the impact on the body during landings must be attenuated in the lower extremity joints. The purpose of this study was to investigate landing biomechanics during landing with dynamic knee valgus by measuring the vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) and angular impulses in the lower extremity during a single-leg landing. The study included 34 female college students, who performed the single-leg drop vertical jump. Lower extremity kinetic and kinematic d

Use of dynamic CT attenuation value for diagnosis of acute gangrenous cholecystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the increase in transient focal enhancement of the liver adjacent to the gallbladder seen on dynamic computed tomography (CT) is greater in gangrenous cholecystitis than in nongangrenous cholecystitis by determining the CT attenuation value. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 57 patients who underwent emergency cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis and preoperative dynamic CT scans between March 2011 and April 2016. Based on the pathology findings, patients were assigned to a gangrenous group or a nongangrenous group. The CT attenuation ra

Prospective evaluation of the use of Mitchell shoes and dynamic abduction brace for idiopathic clubfeet.

Ponseti treatment for clubfoot has been successful, but recurrence continues to be an issue. After correction, patients are typically braced full time with a static abduction bar and shoes. Patient compliance with bracing is a modifiable risk factor for recurrence. We hypothesized that the use of Mitchell shoes and a dynamic abduction brace would increase compliance and thereby reduce the rate of recurrence. A prospective, randomized trial was carried out with consecutive patients treated for idiopathic clubfeet from 2008 to 2012. After casting and tenotomy, patients were randomized into eithe

Ultrafast dynamics of exciton localization in photochemically reactive molecular crystals.

Ultrafast exciton localization in molecular crystals plays an essential role in the solid-state photochemical reactions. Studying exciton dynamics that convert separate electrons and holes into a molecular excited state is challenging because it requires a computational approach that bridges condensed-phase and molecular electronic structure theories. In this work, we take advantage of the periodic time-dependent density functional theory to investigate the exciton localization dynamics in three molecular crystals, 1,2-bis(4-(anthracen-9-yl)phenyl)diazene (1), 1-methylimidazoyl enone (2), and

The cardioprotective effect of human glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (semaglutide) on cisplatin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats: Targeting mitochondrial functions, dynamics, biogenesis, and redox status pathways.

The cardiotoxic effect of chemotherapeutic agents as cisplatin has become a major issue recently. Interference with mitochondrial dynamics, biogenesis, redox status, and apoptosis are the most possible underlying mechanisms. Semaglutide is a human glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1R), which is used primarily for the treatment of DM. Various recent studies have investigated (GLP-1R) role in cardiovascular diseases due to antiapoptotic and antioxidant effects. The current study aimed to investigate the curative role of semaglutide's against cisplatin- induced cardiotoxicity and its

Influenza A M2 Inhibitor Binding Understood through Mechanisms of Excess Proton Stabilization and Channel Dynamics.

Prevalent resistance to inhibitors that target the influenza A M2 proton channel has necessitated a continued drug design effort, supported by a sustained study of the mechanism of channel function and inhibition. Recent high-resolution X-ray crystal structures present the first opportunity to see how the adamantyl amine class of inhibitors bind to M2 and disrupt and interact with the channel's water network, providing insight into the critical properties that enable their effective inhibition in wild-type M2. In this work, we examine the hypothesis that these drugs act primarily as mechanism-

Dynamic visual acuity testing for screening patients with vestibular impairments.

Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) may be a useful indicator of the function of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) but most DVA tests involve active head motion in the yaw plane. During gait the passive, vertical VOR may be more relevant and passive testing would be less likely to elicit compensatory strategies. The goal of this study was to determine if testing dynamic visual acuity during passive vertical motion of the subject would differentiate normal subjects from patients with known vestibular disorders. Subjects, normals and patients who had been diagnosed with either unilateral vestibular weak

Immune cell dynamics, cytokines, and extracellular vesicles in systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS): a multiparametric analysis.

BACKGROUND: The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a complex and multifactorial life-threatening reaction triggered by trauma or infection (sepsis). Since the dynamics of immune cells, cytokines and novel markers such as circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) remain incompletely elucidated, we aimed to provide a comprehensive multiparametric characterization of this severe response, to identify potential prognostic and therapeutic targets. METHODS: We conducted a multiparametric and sequential quantification of up to 25 immune cell circulating populations using next-generatio

Addiction history moderates the effect of prefrontal 10-Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation on habitual action selection.

Individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) transition more quickly from goal-directed to habitual action-selection, but the neural mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remain unclear. Data from animal models suggest that drugs of abuse can modify the neurocircuits that regulate action-selection, enhancing circuits that drive inflexible, habit-based stimulus-response (S-R) action-selection and weakening circuits that drive flexible, goal-directed actions. Here, we tested the effect of bilateral 10-Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (10Ηz-tACs) of the dorsolateral prefrontal c

Implications of localized charge for human influenza A H1N1 hemagglutinin evolution: Insights from deep mutational scans.

Seasonal influenza A viruses of humans evolve rapidly due to strong selection pressures from host immune responses, principally on the hemagglutinin (HA) viral surface protein. Based on mouse transmission experiments, a proposed mechanism for immune evasion consists of increased avidity to host cellular receptors, mediated by electrostatic charge interactions with negatively charged cell surfaces. In support of this, the HA charge of the globally circulating H3N2 has increased over time since its pandemic. However, the same trend was not seen in H1N1 HA sequences. This is counter-intuitive, si
