Effects of broiler strain and stocking density on causes of death in broilers in Denmark.

Broiler production industries are increasingly prioritizing animal welfare in line with the traditional focus on production traits such as rapid growth rate and feed efficiency. Broiler strain and stocking density are key welfare factors that are addressed in high-welfare systems. Still, it is unclear how slower-growing broilers or lower densities affect health, causes of death, and gross lesions, which are vital issues in welfare assessment. This study investigated the effects of broiler strain, stocking density, and age on causes of death and gross lesions, with particular attention to growt

Global trends and regional disparities in the burden of headache disorders, 1990-2021: a comprehensive analysis of the global burden of disease study.

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders significantly impact health and functioning, yet studies on their global burden across all age groups are limited. This study utilizes data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 to investigate the global burden of headache disorders. METHODS: This analysis draws on GBD 2021 data, covering 204 countries and territories. We investigated the prevalence, incidence, and DALYs for headache disorders from 1990 to 2021, calculating Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC) to analyze temporal trends. Additionally, decomposition analysis was used to evaluate the c

More than just a polyp: Hidden acromegaly behind a giant colonic mass.

Acromegaly is a rare endocrine disorder characterized by chronic hypersecretion of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1, leading to an increased incidence of colonic polyps and neoplasia. This report describes a 38-year-old man who presented with gastrointestinal symptoms and was found to have a giant sessile polyp in the colon. Routine preoperative evaluation revealed elevated serum insulin-like growth factor-1 and unsuppressed growth hormone levels, leading to the diagnosis of acromegaly, which was confirmed by a pituitary MRI that showed a macroadenoma. This case highlights that

[The influences of anterior disc displacement on oral mandibular function and morphology and their biological mechanisms].

Anterior disc displacement is a common subtype seen in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) patients. It may cause mandibular movement disorders, such as clicking of joint, intermittent closed lock, limitation of mouth opening, etc. These disorders may affect the life qualities of patients. Anterior disc displacement may also cause mandibular malformations, especially among adolescents, which may affect the growth of condyle, therefore may have a correlation with mandibular retrusion or mandibular deviation when grown up. This paper going to review the influences of anterior disc displacement on

Endocrine aspects of eating disorders in adolescents.

Eating disorders are an important health concern among adolescents. Young women frequently present with signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. These disorders represent clinically significant illnesses with serious and sometimes permanent medical complications, including a number of endocrine conditions, that, in general, result from the body s adaptive response to malnutrition. Examples include disorders of metabolism, cortisol and leptin regulation, fluid and electrolyte homeostasis, thyroid function, glucose regulation, growth and development, and reproductive function

Craniosynostosis in patients with Noonan syndrome caused by germline KRAS mutations.

Craniosynostosis, the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, is a developmental defect that disrupts the cranial morphogenetic program, leading to variable dysmorphic craniofacial features and associated functional abnormalities. Craniosynostosis is frequently observed as an associated feature in a number of clinically and genetically heterogeneous syndromic conditions, including a group of disorders caused by activating mutations in genes coding for the fibroblast growth factor receptor family members FGFR1, FGFR2, and FGFR3. In these disorders, dysregulation of intracellular signal

Rehabilitation of Occlusal Vertical Dimension in a Patient with Acromegaly: A Clinical Report.

Acromegaly is a rare acquired disorder caused by excessive growth hormone production. Dentists play an important role in the diagnosis of this disorder because of intraoral and extraoral symptoms such as extreme growth of the mandible, enlargement of the maxilla, diastema between teeth, a tendency toward malocclusion, a wide and thick nose, a marked malar bone, and thick lips. The prosthetic treatment of these patients is challenging because growth in the condyles and rami can lead to the development of a severe class III jaw relationship. This case report describes the prosthetic treatment of

[Bone growth after finger replantation in childhood].

Following replantation in childhood, growth disorders of the affected epiphysis can influence function and aesthetic appearance of the hand. In a retrospective study long-term results of replantation in the upper limb in childhood were analysed with respect to factors influencing further growth. 22 patients with 29 replanted fingers were reviewed clinically and radiologically after an average interval of ten years. An average bone growth of 93% compared to the contralateral non-injured side was found. With the epiphysis affected, bone growth was reduced to 86% of the contralateral side. Analys…

Gender Differences in Anxiety Trajectories from Middle to Late Adolescence.

Although developmental trajectories of anxiety symptomatology have begun to be explored, most research has focused on total anxiety symptom scores during childhood and early adolescence, using racially/ethnically homogenous samples. Understanding the heterogeneous courses of anxiety disorder symptoms during middle to late adolescence has the potential to clarify developmental risk models of anxiety and to inform prevention programs. Therefore, this study specifically examined gender differences in developmental trajectories of anxiety disorder symptoms (generalized anxiety disorder, panic diso

The use of growth hormone-releasing hormone in the diagnosis and treatment of short stature.

We have assessed the role of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) as a diagnostic test in 40 children and young adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD), principally using the GHRH(1-29)NH2 analogue. Following 200 micrograms GHRH as an acute intravenous bolus, serum GH rose to normal or just subnormal levels in 13 out of 17 children with structural lesions, and in 8 of 14 patients with idiopathic GHD or panhypopituitarism. Of 9 children (mean age 12 years) with GHD following treatment with cranial irradiation for nonendocrine tumours, all responded acutely to GHRH. 12- and 24-hour infusi

Growth and development considerations for craniomaxillofacial surgery.

The purpose of craniomaxillofacial surgery is to improve function, occlusion, craniofacial balance, and aesthetics. Accurate diagnosis, assessment, and careful treatment planning are essential in achieving a successful outcome, and an understanding of the pattern of facial growth is integral in this process. Patients with craniofacial congenital dysmorphologies, posttraumatic asymmetries, or disturbances of facial balance from radiation may have functional and/or aesthetic issues that require treatment. Understanding the complexities of growth in the skull and face is a key component to approp

Hormonal regulation of growth plate cartilage.

Longitudinal bone growth occurs in the growth plate through a process called endochondral bone formation, a process where resting zone chondrocytes are recruited to start active proliferation and then undergo differentiation, followed by apoptosis and later mineralization. The balance between proliferation and differentiation is a crucial regulatory step controlled by various growth factors/hormones acting in both endocrine and paracrine/autocrine ways. From studies of individuals with aromatase deficiency and a boy with defective oestrogen receptor (ER)-alpha it has become clear that oestroge
