Sialolith in a minor salivary gland of an 8-year-old European domestic shorthair cat: a case report.

Sialolithiasis is a rare condition in cats. An 8-year-old neutered female European domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for halitosis, reduced appetite and weight loss. General physical examination was unremarkable, except for a low body condition score. A complete oral examination revealed generalized periodontal disease and tooth resorption. Full-mouth radiographs confirmed the presence of multiple teeth affected by tooth resorption. Additionally, dental radiographs also identified a radiopaque calcified structure adjacent to the caudal part of the body of the left mandibular bone. Different…

An unusual foreign object mimicking an odontoma in a patient with cleft alveolus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The habit of inserting foreign objects into body cavities is seen in children and in adults with intellectual disability. Usuall … who was awaiting an alveolar bone graft. Apart from problems related to the alveolar cleft and mild halitosis, he was otherwise healthy. This was suspected to be an odontoma in the cleft region. During alveolar bone graft surgery, a button battery was recovered that was later confirmed as having been self-inserted by the child. Alveolar bone graft surgery w …

The role of probiotics in prevention of oral diseases.

The dynamic development of knowledge in the field of probiotics was commenced at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, many ways of … med the beneficial role of probiotics in reduction of the bacterial population in periodontitis and halitosis. Long-term observation and a properly designed study protocol will allow us to answer many questions concerning substitution of one strain of bacteria by another.

Toxicity assessment of mouthwashes in the pollen tube growth test.

AIM: Mouthwashes are frequently used to treat oral discomfort, halitosis or superficial infections. Adverse effects of mouthwash use are recognized, e.g. mucosal peeling and stomatitis. In addition, mouthwashes have been accused of causing oral cancer. The aim of this study was to analyse the acute toxicity of mouthwashes in an in vitro testing system, the pollen tube growth test (PTG test). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty mouthwash brands were prepared for study. The mouthwashes were added to suspensions of pollen of tobacco plants (Nicotiana sylvestris) that were collected during the early st…

Predicting oral malodour based on the microbiota in saliva samples using a deep learning approach.

BACKGROUND: Oral malodour is mainly caused by volatile sulphur compounds produced by bacteria and bacterial interactions. It is difficult to predict the presence or absence of oral malodour based on the abundances of specific species and their combinations. This paper presents an effective way of deep learning approach to predicting the oral malodour from salivary microbiota. METHODS: The 16S rRNA genes from saliva samples of 90 subjects (45 had no or weak oral malodour, and 45 had marked oral malodour) were amplified, and gene sequence analysis was carried out. Deep learning classified oral

Oral malodor: causes, assessment, and treatment.

Oral malodor has been recognized in the literature since ancient times. However, in the last 5 to 6 years, it has come to the forefront of public and dental professional awareness. Oral malodor is caused mainly by facultative bacteria on the tongue that produce volatile organic compounds. Traditional assessment methods include organoleptic measurements and gas chromatography. Newer techniques make diagnosis more convenient, and the electronic nose is in the early stages of development. After assessment, active practices of using proper oral hygiene products and making small lifestyle changes c

Control of oral malodour by dentifrices measured by gas chromatography.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of toothpaste treatments on levels of oral volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) measured by gas chromatography in two clinical studies. METHODS: These were blinded, randomised, controlled, crossover studies with 16 (study A) or 20 (study B) healthy volunteers between the ages of 19-54. Study A: breath samples were collected at baseline, immediately and lhr after brushing. Four dentifrices (Zinc A, Zinc B, commercially available triclosan dentifrice and zinc free control) were evaluated. Study B: breath samples were collected at baseline, immediately, 1, 2, 3 and

Production and origin of oral malodor: a review of mechanisms and methods of analysis.

Organoleptic studies indicate that the oral cavity is usually the principal source of physiologic malodor associated with the early morning halitosis. In all individuals, regardless of the age or health status of the oral tissues, the most intense oral malodor is exhibited after prolonged periods of reduced saliva flow and abstinence from food and liquid. This results from normal metabolic activity in the oral cavity and is accentuated in cases with periodontal involvement. Physiologic oral malodor is transient in duration as it can be controlled to varying degrees in most individuals by oral …

Isolation and characterization of probiotic strains for improving oral health.

UNLABELLED: Probiotics have been proven effective for preventing caries. In contrast, the effect of probiotics on improving oral diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis and halitosis has been less explored. OBJECTIVE: To perform a screening of lactic acid bacteria, according to international guidelines for the evaluation of probiotics, in order to select candidate probiotic strains for preventing oral disorders. STUDY DESIGN: The strains were isolated from healthy children and were subjected to a variety of in vitro tests in order to show their functionality. The safety of the strains was…

Topographic distribution of bacteria associated with oral malodour on the tongue.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the topographic distribution of bacterial types and loads associated with mid-morning oral malodour on the tongue surface. DESIGN: Fifty subjects with good oral health and at least 20 natural uncrowned teeth were included. Samples were taken with sterile brushes from the dorsal anterior (DA), dorsal middle (DM), dorsal posterior (DP), dorsal posterior to the circumvallate papillae (DPCP), lateral posterior (LP) and ventral posterior (VP) tongue surfaces. Samples were cultured on appropriate media for anaerobic bacteria, aerobic bacteria, Gram-negative anaerobic bacte
