A good tumoricidal activity of vindesine (VDS) has been reported in a variety of animal tumors and in human leukemias and lymphomas. We treated 22 patients who had received no prior chemotherapy and were suffering from a variety of malignant neoplasms with 0.5 mg/m2 to 3.0 mg/m2 VDS i. v. once or three times at weekly intervals and recorded the clinical, hematologic, and especially, neurological side effects. Clinically we observed fatigue in nine patients, paresthesias in seven, myalgias in three, vertigo and diarrhea in two, and skin pains, tinnitus, gastric pains, alopecia, and tremor in on

Cryoglobulinemia (CG) is defined by the presence of serum immunoglobulins that precipitate below 37°C and redissolve upon rewarming. It is classified into three types based on immunoglobulin composition. Type I, a rare form, involves monoclonal IgM or IgG and is linked to lymphoproliferative disorders. Types II and III are known as mixed CG (MC): Type II consists of polyclonal IgG and monoclonal IgM with rheumatoid factor (RF) activity, whereas Type III includes polyclonal IgG and polyclonal IgM with RF activity. MC is predominantly associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and involve

INTRODUCTION: Bloom syndrome (BS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a loss-of-function mutation in the BLM gene encoding an RecQ helicase involved in DNA repair and maintenance of chromosomal stability. In patients with BS, significant sensitivity to both DNA-damaging chemotherapy (CT) and ionizing radiation complicates the management of neoplasms by exacerbating comorbidities and predisposing to toxicities and poor outcomes.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old female patient diagnosed with BS who presented with early-stage triple-negative breast cancer was treated with four cycles of d

BACKGROUND: Over the past years, the exact correlation between telomere length and hematological malignancies was still not fully understood.
METHODS: We performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization study to investigate the causal relationship between telomere length and hematological malignancies. We selected genetic instruments associated with telomere length. The genetic associations for lymphoid and hematopoietic malignant neoplasms were obtained from the most recent publicly accessible FinnGen study R9 data. Inverse variant weighted (IVW) analysis was adopted as the primary method, and

Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a rare hematological neoplasm caused by the excessive proliferation of pathological mast cells that accumulate in the bone marrow (BM) and other extracutaneous organs leading to multi-organ damage and failure. Mast cell leukemia (MCL) is a rare form of systemic mastocytosis, accounting for < 1% of all cases of mastocytosis. MCL usually behaves aggressively with poor responses to current treatment options. Here, we report a diagnostic challenge with the leukemic subtype of MCL with a primary suspicion of pancreatic cancer. A cytomorphological, immunophenotypic, and

BACKGROUND: Conventional cytoreductive therapy for patients with chronic Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) includes hydroxyurea (HU), interferon-alpha2 (IFN), and anagrelide. HU is worldwide the most used cytoreductive agent, which lowers elevated blood cell counts within days in the large majority of patients. However, some patients may experience rebound cytosis when HU is reduced due to cytopenia, thereby potentially giving rise to fluctuating cell counts during therapy. Such rapid oscillations may be harmful and potentially elicit thrombosis. Treatment with IFN grad

BACKGROUND: Myeloma of laryngeal cartilage (MLC) is a rare plasma cell neoplasm which has not been well characterized. However, it is an important differential diagnosis of laryngeal cartilage mass as it can indicate the presence of underlying systemic hematological diseases, such as multiple myeloma (MM), that is associated with poor prognosis. This article is the first of its kind and aims to educate clinicians on future diagnosis and management of similar cases.
METHODS: Search of MLC was performed on the medical literature databases of Medline, PUBMED, and EMBASE. Additionally, institutio

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with several distinct hematological and epithelial malignancies, e.g., Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, and others. The association with several malignant tumors of local and worldwide distribution makes EBV one of the most important tumor viruses. Furthermore, because EBV can cause posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease, transplant medicine has to deal with EBV as a major pathogenic virus second only to cytomegalovirus. In this review, we summarize briefly the natural history of EBV infection

BACKGROUND: Acute T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a post thymic (peripheral) T-cell neoplasm caused by human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). Historically, the chemotherapy regimen CHOP (cyclophosphamide/doxorubicin/vincristine/prednisone) has been the standard treatment of this rare malignancy. However, its prognosis is poor and median survival in the aggressive variants of ATLL is only 6-10 months. Recently, a more aggressive regimen piloted in Japan, vincristine/cyclophosphamide/doxorubicin/prednisone (VCAP)- doxorubicin/ranimustine/prednisone (AMP)- vindesine/etoposide/carbopl

Optimal salvage chemotherapy has not been established for lymphoid malignancy, which is refractory to the conventional cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone regimen. To explore an effective regimen, we conducted a phase I pilot study of combination chemotherapy with methotrexate, ifosfamide, l-asparaginase and dexamethasone (MILD), which are unaffected by MDR1-encoded P-glycoprotein. A total of 18 patients with lethal lymphoid malignancy were enrolled over a 2-yr period. The median age was 63 yr. Eleven patients had T/NK-cell malignancies, six had B-cell malignancies, and

The BCL6 corepressor (BCOR) is a transcription factor involved in the control of embryogenesis, mesenchymal stem cells function, hematopoiesis, and lymphoid development. Recurrent somatic clonal mutations of the BCOR gene and its homolog BCORL1 have been detected in several hematologic malignancies and aplastic anemia. They are scattered across the whole gene length and mostly represent frameshifts (deletions, insertions), nonsense, and missence mutations. These disruptive events lead to the loss of full-length BCOR protein and to the lack or low expression of a truncated form of the protein,

Polycythemia vera (PV) in children and adolescents is very rare. Data on clinical and laboratory evaluations as well as on treatment modalities are sparse. Here, we report the long-term clinical course of a PV patient first diagnosed more than 40 years ago at age 12. In addition, after a systematic review of the scientific medical literature, clinical and hematological data of 35 patients (19 female and 17 male) from 25 previous reports are summarized. Three patients developed PV following antecedent hematological malignancies. Budd-Chiari syndrome was diagnosed in seven patients indicating a

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a congenital hemolytic anemia with various clinical findings. In some cases hematological neoplasias and some solid tumors may accompany this disease but these have rarely been reported. Here we report five cases with SCD and accompanying hematological neoplasias including lymphoblastic lymphoma, multiple myeloma and hairy cell leukemia in four cases with sickle cell trait and one case of Hodgkin' disease in sickle cell anemia. All of the cases except one had no previously diagnosed congenital hemolytic anemia and/or family history. Peripheral blood findings sugges

Haemato-radiology represents a relatively newly emerging, vast, and complex area of diagnostic imaging. Its complexity arises from the multimodality nature of patient assessment, the multisystem presentation of haematological malignancies and their complications, and the volume of imaging required for diagnosis and follow-up of the fifth most common malignancy type in the United Kingdom. Decisive and accurate assessment of disease by radiologists is at the heart of the haemato-oncology multidisciplinary team (MDT) and therefore essential for providing optimal patient care. We hope to support r

Invasive fungal infections (IFI) continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematological malignancies. Candida and Aspergillus species constitute most of the IFI in these patients.. It has been reported that most of the invasive aspergillosis epidemics are related to the construction works in the hospital. In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency of IFI in the old and the new hospital building after relocation in patients with hematological malignancies. BACKGROUND: The clinical outcomes of patients who received distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy (DPS) and spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (SPDP) have been generally investigated. However, postoperative hematological changes after distal pancreatectomy with or without splenectomy are poorly understood.
METHODS: Information from patients undergoing distal pancreatectomy (DP) between January 2014 and June 2019 at a single institution was reviewed. A linear mixed-effects model was used to compare dynamic hematological changes between different groups.
RESULTS: A total of 302 patients w
