The Association Between Sexual Identity and Cannabis Vaping Among U.S. Adults: Exploring Differences by Serious Psychological Distress.

INTRODUCTION: Cannabis vaping has gained popularity, particularly among sexual minority individuals. Sexual minority individuals experience high levels of serious psychological distress, which might worsen cannabis vaping disparities. This study examined cannabis vaping prevalence by sexual identity and serious psychological distress. METHODS: Data were drawn from the U.S. 2022-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N=92,233). A weighted multivariable binomial logistic regression model assessed past-month cannabis vaping (no, yes) by sexual identity (heterosexual/straight, gay/lesbian,

Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Cannabis by Sexual Identity, Race, Ethnicity, and Gender: A Nationwide Analysis Using the 2016 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority populations experience higher rates of substance use and related problems, but little is known about their specific involvement in driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol (DUIA) and cannabis (DUIC) incidents. METHODS: Using data from the 2016 to 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we used logistic regression models to estimate the interactive effects of sexual identity, race/ethnicity, and gender on past-year DUIA among adults who used alcohol and DUIC among adults who used cannabis, accounting for covariates. Using model estimates and linear combinat

Paying for Sex Among Males and Females: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Melbourne, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Most research focuses on individual selling sex but very few on paying for sex. This study aimed to determine the proportion of males and females who paid for sex and associated factors. METHODS: We conducted a short survey at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre between March and April 2019, which included a question on whether they had paid for sex in the past 3 months. The proportion of individuals who had paid for sex was calculated by sex and sexual orientation. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were conducted to identify individual's factors (e.g., demog

Variations in Gambling Disorder Symptomatology Across Sexual Identity Among College Student-Athletes.

Gambling disorder has serious negative consequences for individual health and wellbeing, while being more prevalent among college student-athletes compared to the general college population. While previous research reports that sexual minority (i.e., gay, lesbian and bisexual) populations have higher rates of addictive behaviors such as alcohol and drug abuse, no previous research has explored risk for gambling disorder symptomatology by sexual identity status. The aim of the current study is to identify differences in the severity of gambling disorder symptomatology between sexual minority an

Depression and anxiety in patients with and without same-sex attraction: differences in clinical expression, lifestyle factors, and vulnerability indicators.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare clinical expressions (severity and loneliness), lifestyle factors (substance use), and vulnerability indicators (stressful childhood experiences) in patients with any same-sex attraction versus heterosexual patients diagnosed with depression and/or anxiety disorder. Little is known about this, even though it is now well documented that depression and anxiety are more prevalent among persons with same-sex attraction. METHOD: Data, derived from the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), allowed us to compare patients with a same-sex

Reproductive health in lesbian and bisexual women in Sweden.

OBJECTIVE: Previous international studies have elucidated signs of poor physical and mental health in women who have sex with women (WSW) and an avoidance of preventive healthcare. When the first Nordic gynecological clinic for WSW was started in Stockholm in 1999, an opportunity to compile information about their physical and psychological health and social situation arose. DESIGN: Retrospective descriptive. SETTING AND SAMPLE: A total of 706 women: 264 patients attending a WSW clinic and 442 women attending the regular gynecological clinic. METHODS: Questionnaires. Response rate: WSW 77%,

Children of homosexuals more apt to be homosexuals? A reply to Morrison and to Cameron based on an examination of multiple sources of data.

Ten narrative studies involving family histories of 262 children of gay fathers and lesbian mothers were evaluated statistically in response to Morrison's (2007) concerns about Cameron's (2006) research that had involved three narrative studies. Despite numerous attempts to bias the results in favour of the null hypothesis and allowing for up to 20 (of 63, 32%) coding errors, Cameron's (2006) hypothesis that gay and lesbian parents would be more likely to have gay, lesbian, bisexual or unsure (of sexual orientation) sons and daughters was confirmed. Percentages of children of gay and lesbian p

Risk factors for reproductive and breast cancers among older lesbians.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if older lesbians have more breast and gynecological cancer risk factors compared with their heterosexual sisters. METHODS: Using multiple methods, including respondent-driven sampling with the lesbian as the index participant, a sample of 370 lesbian-heterosexual sister pairs aged >or=40 completed an anonymous survey about their health. For this secondary data analysis, we extracted data on an older subset of this group, those sister pairs with at least one sister >50 years (n = 42 pairs or 84 women). For this project, we explored the breast and gynecological risk fac

Improving epidemiological surveys of sexual behaviour conducted by telephone.

BACKGROUND: This study assesses the impact of Telephone Audio Computer-Assisted Self-Interviewing (T-ACASI) on the reporting of sensitive (mainly heterosexual) behaviours. METHODS: A randomized experiment was embedded in a telephone survey that drew probability samples of the populations of the USA (N = 1543) and Baltimore city (N = 744). Respondents were randomly assigned to have questions asked either by a T-ACASI computer or by a human telephone interviewer. RESULTS: Compared with interviewer-administered telephone surveys, T-ACASI obtained more frequent reporting of a range of mainly het

New HIV cases attributable to syphilis in the USA: estimates from a simplified transmission model.

OBJECTIVE: Because syphilis can raise the likelihood of HIV transmission and acquisition, syphilis prevention in the USA has the potential benefit of reducing the number of new cases of HIV. We developed a simplified transmission model to estimate the annual number and cost of new, heterosexually-acquired HIV cases in the USA attributable to syphilis. DESIGN: We estimated the number of heterosexual, HIV serodiscordant partnerships in which syphilis was present in 1996. The model included the probability of transmission of HIV (with and without the presence of syphilis) and other parameters ba

The association of syphilis with risk of human immunodeficiency virus infection in patients attending sexually transmitted disease clinics.

A serologic survey of 4863 patients attending two inner-city sexually transmitted disease clinics was conducted in 1988 1 year after an initial survey to reassess the prevalence and associated risk factors for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The HIV seroprevalence rates had not changed significantly (5.2% in 1987, 4.9% in 1988), and remained higher among men (5.6%) than among women (3.6%). The HIV seroprevalence increased steadily with age, to 34 years in women and to 39 years in men. Of patients with a reactive syphilis serologic test result, 24.3% were HIV infected compared wit

Does per-act HIV-1 transmission risk through anal sex vary by gender? An updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

Quantifying HIV-1 transmission risk per-act of anal intercourse (AI) is important for HIV-1 prevention. We updated previous reviews by searching Medline and Embase to 02/2018. We derived pooled estimates of receptive AI (URAI) and insertive AI (UIAI) risk unprotected by condoms using random-effects models. Subgroup analyses were conducted by gender, study design, and whether antiretroviral treatment (ART) had been introduced by the time of the study. Two new relevant studies were identified, one of which met inclusion criteria, adding three new cohorts and increasing number of individuals/part
