Study on Thorax Attenuation Tomography Using Low-frequency Ultrasound Differential Imaging.

Ultrasound is a preferred modality in the field of medical imaging. However, its application in the human thorax faces challenges due to issues such as reflections at the lung-pleural interface and scattering within the lungs. Recent research has shown that low-frequency ultrasound, ranging from 10 kHz to 750 kHz, can effectively penetrate the human thorax. Furthermore, it has been observed that the amplitude of ultrasound signals changes significantly during the subject's respiration, while its traveltime remains relatively constant. In this study, we derive the relationship between the energy

[Consensus conference on acute bronchiolitis (v): prevention of acute bronchiolitis. Review of scientific evidence].

A review of the evidence on prevention of acute bronchiolitis is presented. Acute bronchiolitis prevention arises from three basic approaches: preventive treatment to reduce recurrent wheezing following an episode of acute bronchiolitis, preventive treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of RSV bronchiolitis in the population at risk (prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, congenital heart disease, etc.), and general preventive measures to reduce nosocomial infection with RSV. There is sufficient evidence on the lack of efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids, oral corticosteroids and mon

High fat diet blunts the effects of leptin on ventilation and on carotid body activity.

KEY POINTS: Leptin plays a role in the control of breathing, acting mainly on central nervous system; however, leptin receptors have been recently shown to be expressed in the carotid body (CB), and this finding suggests a physiological role for leptin in the regulation of CB function. Leptin increases minute ventilation in both basal and hypoxic conditions in rats. It increases the frequency of carotid sinus nerve discharge in basal conditions, as well as the release of adenosine from the CB. However, in a metabolic syndrome animal model, the effects of leptin in ventilatory control, carotid

Management of pulmonary contusion and flail chest: an Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma practice management guideline.

BACKGROUND: Despite the prevalence and recognized association of pulmonary contusion and flail chest (PC-FC) as a combined, complex injury pattern with interrelated pathophysiology, the mortality and morbidity of this entity have not improved during the last three decades. The purpose of this updated EAST practice management guideline was to present evidence-based recommendations for the treatment of PC-FC. METHODS: A query was conducted of MEDLINE, Embase, PubMed and Cochrane databases for the period from January 1966 through June 30, 2011. All evidence was reviewed and graded by two members

Right congenital diaphragmatic hernia: an 18-year experience.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis and outcome of right congenital diaphragmatic hernia (RCDH) are far less well known than the more common left CDH (LCDH). In addition, onset of RCDH beyond the neonatal period with a spectrum of atypical symptoms is not unusual. A retrospective analysis of RCDH treated at a single center over 18 years has been reviewed with regard to outcome after the introduction of a new treatment protocol for CDH. METHODS: All charts of patients with CDH between 1987 and 2004 were reviewed. Twenty-nine patients with RCDH were identified. The patients were divided into 2 histo

Effect of Very-High-Flow Nasal Therapy on Airway Pressure and End-Expiratory Lung Impedance in Healthy Volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated a positive linear correlation between flow delivered and airway pressure generated by high-flow nasal therapy. Current practice is to use flows over a range of 30-60 L/min; however, it is technically possible to apply higher flows. In this study, airway pressure measurements and electrical impedance tomography were used to assess the relationship between flows of up to 100 L/min and changes in lung physiology. METHODS: Fifteen healthy volunteers were enrolled into this study. A high-flow nasal system capable of delivering a flow of 100 L/min was

High-resolution cry analysis in preterm newborn infants.

Infant monitoring is a common procedure in clinical practice in neonatal critical care units. A number of vital functions are monitored, such as heart beat, breathing, blood flow, etc. Specifically, preterm and/or low-birth-weight infants often present respiratory problems that require monitoring. These may range from insufficient ventilation to apnoea. One of the most common events that may affect the respiratory flow is crying, a physiological action made by the infant to communicate and draw attention, but, for a preterm infant, this action requires great effort, which may cause distress an

Cerebral oxygen tension in rats during deliberate hypotension with sodium nitroprusside, 2-chloroadenosine, or deep isoflurane anesthesia.

Thirty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control animals and those receiving sodium nitroprusside (SNP), 2-chloroadenosine, or a high, inspired concentration of isoflurane to produce deliberate hypotension to a mean arterial blood pressure of 50 mmHg. Ventilation was controlled (FIo2 = 0.3); control animals and those treated with sodium nitroprusside or 2-chloroadenosine breathed isoflurane 1.4 vol%, whereas isoflurane, 3.9 vol%, was required to produce hypotension by deep anesthesia alone. Multiple tissue oxygen tension values (PtO2) were measured at intervals of 10
