Nursing care system development for patients with cleft lip-palate and craniofacial deformities at Srinagarind Hospital.

BACKGROUND: A holistic nursing care system for patients with cleft lip-palate (CLP) and/or craniofacial deformities was arranged by the Nursing Department, Srinagarind Hospital, which provides tertiary nursing care. The nursing care system was developed as per system theory via participating management with action research following the Deming Cycle (PDCA) divided into 3 phases. Participants included 117 nurses from 8 divisions caring for patients with CLP and 128 parent caregivers. The research instruments included: 1) situation analysis, 2) meeting and planning and 3) self-administered quest

Nurse Leaders' Perceptions of Existing Leadership Practices and Development Needs: A Descriptive Qualitative Study.

AIM: To explore nurse leaders' perceptions of leadership practices and development needs. BACKGROUND: Nursing leadership has gained increasing attention due to the growing complexity of healthcare systems and the need to ensure high-quality patient care, staff retention and job satisfaction. However, recently many nurses assume leadership roles with limited preparation, highlighting the need to strengthen leadership development, education and training. Despite growing interest in nursing leadership, limited research has explored how nurse leaders perceive their roles, competencies and educati

Nurses' perspectives on obtaining best possible medication histories in a virtual care setting: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Medication discrepancies during transitions of care are a major and preventable source of medication-related harm. A Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) is a critical first step in medication reconciliation and risk mitigation. While nurses are increasingly recognised as contributors to medication safety, limited evidence has explored their experiences obtaining BPMHs within a virtual care setting. This study aims to explore nurses' perspectives on obtaining BPMHs for patients in a virtual care setting, including perceived enablers, challenges, and implications for practice opt

Understanding psychiatrist readiness for AI: a study of access, self-efficacy, trust, and design expectations.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is receiving growing attention in psychiatric practice, yet psychiatrists vary considerably in how they perceive its benefits, risks, and clinical usefulness. Successful implementation depends not only on technological performance but also on clinicians' readiness, including their access to AI, confidence in using it, trust in its reliability, and expectations for its design. Evidence on these dimensions remains limited in China. OBJECTIVE: This study examined Chinese psychiatrists' readiness for AI across four dimensions-access, self-efficacy, trust,

Formal and informal science-policy interaction during public health emergencies of international concern: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Interaction between science and policy might be a crucial asset for policy decisions during public health emergencies. Much work has been published about processes and forms of science-policy interaction on the one hand and challenges of public health emergency contexts on the other. However, more knowledge is needed to understand the challenges that arise when these two issues intersect. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review informed by the Johanna-Briggs-Institute protocol and searched seven databases to identify formal and informal approaches to organising science-policy inter

Measurement of the impact of giant cell arteritis and treatment with glucocorticoids on health-related quality of life.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common type of systemic vasculitis and predominantly affects women over the age of 50 years. Clinical presentation includes cranial and ocular involvement, joint and systemic features. Diagnosis is confirmed by positive temporal artery biopsy or ultrasound or large vessel vasculitis on positron emission tomography. Treatment includes high-dose glucocorticoids (GC) and immunosuppressants. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can be impacted by pain, fatigue, and sight loss; glucocorticoid therapy adds further physical, psychological, and social burdens.

A Comprehensive Review of Acute Type A Aortic Dissection: Epidemiology, Classification, Management Strategies, Mortality Risk Assessment, and Ethical Considerations for Patients who Refuse Blood Transfusions.

Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a life-threatening cardiovascular surgical emergency with a mortality of 20-25%. This review offers an overview of current research on the morphology, taxonomy, epidemiology, and anesthetic, perfusion, and surgical strategies involved in ATAAD. Moreover, this review examines methods for predicting mortality risk and explores clinician-patient interactions, particularly those involving patients who refuse blood transfusions. The literature search included PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect databases, as well as any relevant books.

Towards Trustworthy AI in Healthcare: Epistemic Uncertainty Estimation for Clinical Decision Support.

Introduction: Widespread adoption of AI for medical decision-making is still hindered due to ethical and safety-related concerns. For AI-based decision support systems in healthcare settings, it is paramount to be reliable and trustworthy. Common deep learning approaches, however, have the tendency towards overconfidence when faced with unfamiliar or changing conditions. Inappropriate extrapolation beyond well-supported scenarios may have dire consequences highlighting the importance of the reliable estimation of local knowledge uncertainty and its communication to the end user. Materials and

Guillain-Barré syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19 vaccines in Victoria, Australia.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an adverse event of special interest (AESI) for surveillance systems monitoring adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) with COVID-19 vaccines. Emerging data support a temporal association between GBS and adenovirus-vector COVID-19 vaccines. We present a case series of GBS reports submitted between February and November 2021 to our enhanced spontaneous surveillance system (SAEFVIC) in Victoria, Australia, following vaccination with either the adenovirus-vector vaccine Vaxzevria ChadOx1-S (AstraZeneca) or an mRNA vaccine (Comirnaty BNT162b2 [Pfizer-BioNTech

Cholecystohepatic duct detected during laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The cholecystohepatic duct is a rare form of an aberrant hepatic duct that connects to the gallbladder. Although cholecystohepatic duct is reported to be a very rare anomaly, injury of cholecystohepatic duct during cholecystectomy may result in serious complications. Herein, we present a case of cholecystohepatic duct in the ventral branch of the right posterior inferior segmental bile duct detected during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old woman with cholecystolithiasis had been referred to our hospital for surgery. Drip infusion cholecystocholangiogra

Successfully reducing newborn asphyxia in the labour unit in a large academic medical centre: a quality improvement project using statistical process control.

BACKGROUND: A safe delivery is part of a good start in life, and a continuous focus on preventing harm during delivery is crucial, even in settings with a good safety record. In January 2013, the labour unit at Copenhagen University Hospital, Hvidovre, undertook a quality improvement (QI) project to prevent asphyxia and reduced the percentage of newborns with asphyxia by 48%. METHODS: The change theory consisted of two primary elements: (1) the clinical content, including three clinical bundles of evidence-based care, a 'delivery bundle', an 'oxytocin bundle' and a 'vacuum extraction bundle';
