Visuonociceptive facilitation in peripersonal space and its relationship to body ownership.

The feeling that the body belongs to oneself is referred to as the sense of body ownership. Activation of skin nociceptors can contribute to body ownership in a manner similar to tactile input, highlighting multisensory integration between nociception and vision in body ownership. The space surrounding one's own body, termed peripersonal space (PPS), is crucial for interacting with objects, for threat avoidance and self-preservation. While PPS has been extensively studied for touch and vision, less is known about how nociceptive input is processed within PPS and how this relates to body owners

Exploring transcutaneous electrostimulation for proprioceptive feedback in upper limb prostheses: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Myoelectric upper-limb prosthetic users frequently encounter challenges related to proprioceptive deficits, which can impair their ability to perceive limb position and movement. As a result, there has been growing interest in developing strategies to enhance sensory feedback in these users. One promising approach is the use of transcutaneous electrostimulation (TES) to modulate kinesthetic perception and improve proprioception. METHODS: This study consists of two experiments. In the first experiment, TES was applied to the finger flexor muscles of ten able-bodied participants and

Theoretical considerations on models of vestibular self-motion perception as inherent in computational frameworks of motion sickness.

This study examines self-motion perception incorporated into motion sickness models. Research on modeling self-motion perception and motion sickness has advanced independently, though both are thought to share neural mechanisms, making the construction of a unified model opportune. Models based on the Subjective Vertical Conflict (SVC) theory, a refinement of the neural mismatch theory, have primarily focused on motion sickness, with limited validation for self-motion perception. Emerging studies have begun evaluating the perceptual validity of these models, suggesting that some models can rep

Influence of autonomic dysfunction on sleep disturbance in drug-naïve patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance (SD) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), and autonomic dysfunction is believed to play a key role in its worsening. However, the independent contribution of each autonomic domain to SD remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the influence of autonomic dysfunction on SD in drug-naïve patients with PD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 89 drug-naïve patients with PD. SD was assessed using the PD Sleep Scale-version-2 (PDSS-2) and Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire. Autonomic symptoms were evalua

Effectiveness of a Virtual Reality rehabilitation in stroke patients with sensory-motor and proprioception upper limb deficit: A study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Europe. In the case of stroke survival (almost 70%), only 25% of patients recover completely, while the remaining 75% will undergo a rehabilitation phase that varying from months to years. The primary outcomes of a stroke involve motor impairment in the upper limbs, resulting in a partial or complete inability to move the limb on the right or left side, depending on the affected hemisphere. Furthermore, the motor deficit distorts the proprioception of the body and the embodiment ability of the injured limb. This could be rehabilitate

Skill-Based Electronic Gaming Machines: Features that Mimic Video Gaming, Features that could Contribute to Harm, and Their Potential Attraction to Different Groups.

New gambling products have been developed over time as technology permits. For example, early mechanical slot machines were later replaced by electronic gaming machines (EGMs), which enabled a faster speed of play and more immersive experience. EGMs have in the decades since their invention become one of the main drivers of gambling expenditure worldwide and are one of the gambling products most strongly associated with harm. This literature review considers research relevant to a new subcategory of EGM, 'skill-based' EGMs, termed 'SGMs' here. SGMs can be highly varied in content, with some re

Neuropsychiatric features of Parkinson's disease in the era prior to the use of dopaminergic therapies.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis in Parkinson's disease includes hallucinations and delusions. Other non-psychotic neuropsychiatric features include depression, anxiety and apathy. There is currently controversy over whether psychosis in Parkinson's is an intrinsic part of the disorder or the result of dopaminergic medications. This study aimed to examine a historical cohort of individuals with Parkinson's prior to the use of dopaminergic therapy to assess the prevalence of psychotic and other neuropsychiatric features. METHODS: The case notes of patients with Parkinson's disease admitted to the Nationa

Central vestibular networking for sensorimotor control, cognition, and emotion.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to illuminate the extent of the bilateral central vestibular network from brainstem and cerebellum to subcortical and cortical areas and its interrelation to higher cortical functions such as spatial cognition and anxiety. RECENT FINDINGS: The conventional view that the main function of the vestibular system is the perception of self-motion and body orientation in space and the sensorimotor control of gaze and posture had to be developed further by a hierarchical organisation with bottom-up and top-down interconnections. Even the vestibulo-ocular a

Visual perception and spatial transformation of the body in children and adolescents with brain tumor.

Representations of own and others' body play a crucial role in social interaction. While extensive knowledge has been gathered on the neuropsychological deficits affecting body representation in adult brain lesion patients, little is known on how acquired damage to a developing brain may affect this process. We tested it on pediatric brain tumor survivors, comparing the abilities of 30 children and adolescents (aged 8-16 years) surviving from a supratentorial tumor (STT) or an infratentorial tumor (ITT) in two different tasks of body representation. Thirty children with typical development (TD

Preserved Haptic Shape Processing after Bilateral LOC Lesions.

UNLABELLED: The visual and haptic perceptual systems are understood to share a common neural representation of object shape. A region thought to be critical for recognizing visual and haptic shape information is the lateral occipital complex (LOC). We investigated whether LOC is essential for haptic shape recognition in humans by studying behavioral responses and brain activation for haptically explored objects in a patient (M.C.) with bilateral lesions of the occipitotemporal cortex, including LOC. Despite severe deficits in recognizing objects using vision, M.C. was able to accurately recogn

Effect of mirror therapy combined with somatosensory stimulation on motor recovery and daily function in stroke patients: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Mirror therapy (MT) has been recommended as a simple, inexpensive approach to treat motor dysfunction. The use of a mesh glove (MG) was suggested to normalize muscle tone that ameliorates motor impairment. Combining two efficient treatment protocols might maximize the benefits from training. This study investigated the effects of MT combined with MG (MG + MT) versus MT alone on motor performance and daily function after stroke. METHODS: Sixteen patients with chronic unilateral stroke were recruited. A randomized two-group pretest and posttest design was used to randomly as

Investigating the role of serotonin in visual orientation processing using an 'ecstasy' (MDMA)-based research model.

AIMS/OBJECTIVES: A growing body of evidence suggests that regular 'ecstasy' (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) use causes lasting changes to central serotonergic functioning in humans, including in the occipital lobe. Serotonin may play a role in visual orientation processing, mediated in the occipital lobe, via lateral inhibition. The tilt aftereffect is an illusion apparent following adaptation to stimuli angled 5-50 degrees from vertical and thought to be affected by lateral inhibition between occipital neurons. A recent study identified an enhanced tilt aftereffect among ecstasy users, bu

Personality disorder factors predict recovery of employment functioning among treated cocaine abusers.

BACKGROUND: Identifying treatments that produce specific benefits in nondrug psychosocial functioning areas such as employment functioning has been illusive. Examination of dimensions of clinical status that moderate such effects may be useful in planning more effective interventions. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to determine if life stress and four dimensions of personality and psychopathology previously found to predict early post-treatment relapse in diverse groups of substance abusers, predict less recovery in employment functioning among 240 cocaine dependent males after comp

Judgments of synchrony between auditory and moving or still visual stimuli.

The flash-lag effect is a visual illusion wherein intermittently flashed, stationary stimuli seem to trail after a moving visual stimulus despite being flashed synchronously. We tested hypotheses that the flash-lag effect is due to spatial extrapolation, shortened perceptual lags, or accelerated acquisition of moving stimuli, all of which call for an earlier awareness of moving visual stimuli over stationary ones. Participants judged synchrony of a click either to a stationary flash of light or to a series of adjacent flashes that seemingly bounced off or bumped into the edge of the visual dis

Disturbances of visual information processing in early states of psychosis and experimental delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol altered states of consciousness.

Recent data on alterations of the endogenous cannabinoid system in schizophrenia have raised the question of its functional role in this disease. The psychoactive compound of Cannabis sativa, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta9-THC), has been shown to induce psychotic symptoms, but it is unknown to what extend prodromal states of psychoses are reflected by these experimental approaches. This study compares four groups of subjects: antipsychotic-naïve patients suffering from acute paranoid schizophrenic or schizophreniform psychosis (SZ), patients in the prodromal state (IPS), healthy controls

Oculocentric frames of reference for limb movement.

We have reviewed evidence that suggests that the target for limb motion is encoded in a retinocentric frame of reference. Errors in pointing that are elicited by an illusion that distorts the perceived motion of a target are strongly correlated with errors in gaze position. The modulations in the direction and speed of ocular smooth pursuit and of the hand show remarkable similarities, even though the inertia of the arm is much larger than that of the eye. We have suggested that ocular motion is constrained so that gaze provides an appropriate target signal for the hand. Finally, ocular and ma

The cold thyroid nodule: an analysis of diagnostic and therapeutic options.

We applied decision analysis to the controversy over the management of the solitary nonfunctioning thyroid nodule. Three standard management plans were considered: immediate subtotal thyroidectomy; a six month trial of thyroid suppression with L-thyroxine, with non-suppressible lesions being removed surgically; and aspiration cytology followed by surgery or thyroid suppression based on the cytologic examination. The literature formed the basis for quantitative assumptions of the analysis, including the consequences of thyroidectomy, the probability of malignancy, the types and prognoses of can
