Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasite infections in grazing livestock cause significant disease, and are responsible for estimated annual losses of over €1.8 billion in Europe alone. The management of GINs in cattle is threatened by anthelmintic drug resistance (AR). Immediate action is needed to slow the progression of AR in cattle GINs and avoid the increasingly common scenario of multiple drug resistance seen in sheep. Although AR can arise independently on multiple farms, it may also be spread between holdings via purchased cattle. Therefore, effective biosecurity measures on cattle ent

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A variety of neurological complications have been reported following the widespread use of the COVID-19 vaccines which may lead to vaccine hesitancy and serve as a major barrier to the public health aim of achieving protective herd immunity by vaccination. In this article, we review the available evidence regarding these neurological adverse events reported, to provide clarity regarding the same so that unfounded fears maybe put to rest.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is a greater than expected occurrence of severe neurological adverse events such as cortical sinus venous thrombosi

With more than 100 million cases and over 2 million deaths globally, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to remain a major threat. Identifying the behavioral factors influencing preventive behaviors for COVID-19 are crucial in devising public health policies to promote essential strategies to combat the pandemic in an efficient manner. The current study was therefore conducted to estimate the prevalence of COVID-19 preventive behaviors and measure their association with behavioral constructs like threat perception, response efficacy, and self-efficacy, as per socio-demographic background. Universal hepatitis B vaccination of newborns was implemented in Russia starting from 1998. From 1998 to 2019, the incidence of acute hepatitis B reduced from 43.8 to 0.57 cases per 100,000 population. Here, we assessed the timely coverage of newborns with the birth dose (HepB-BD), second dose (HepB-2nd), and three vaccine doses (HepB3) in two remote regions of Russia with low (Belgorod Oblast) and high (Yakutia) levels of hepatitis B virus (HBV) endemicity. Vaccination data were obtained from the medical records of 1000 children in Yakutia and 2182 children in Belgorod Oblast. Sera of healthy

Enhancing immunological responses to vaccination is an important goal in many herd health management systems. OmniGen-AF®(OG) is an immunomodulatory feed additive that has been shown to enhance innate immune function in ruminants and its effects on adaptive immunity require additional study. The objective of this study was to evaluate post-vaccine antibody titers and circulating cellular memory development in heifers fed OG and administered a commercially available modified-live bovine respiratory disease (BRD) vaccine. Twenty-four Holstein heifers were assigned to one of two diets for 170 day

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region in 2013, with serious implications for population health in the region. In 2016, the World Health Organization declared the ZIKV outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following a cluster of associated neurological disorders and neonatal malformations. In 2017, Zika cases declined, but future incidence in LAC remains uncertain due to gaps in our understanding, considerable variation in surveillance and the lack of a comprehensive collation of data from affected countries.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to review the current human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program and its outcomes to date in Australia.
METHODS: This was a review of the published data relating to the introduction and subsequent measurable outcomes of the quadrivalent vaccine, which became part of the Australian national HPV immunization program in 2007. Australia commenced an ongoing, schoolbased, government-funded, HPV vaccination program using the quadrivalent vaccine from April 2007 for adolescent female subjects aged 12 to 13 years, together with a catch-up program for female subje

BACKGROUND: Mass vaccinations of domestic dogs have been shown to effectively control canine rabies and hence human exposure to rabies. Knowledge of dog population demography is essential for planning effective rabies vaccination programmes; however, such information is still rare for African domestic dog populations, particularly so in urban areas. This study describes the demographic structure and population dynamics of a domestic dog population in an urban sub-Saharan African setting. In July to November 2005, we conducted a full household-level census and a cross-sectional dog demography s

The human bacterial pathogen Neisseria meningitidis remains a serious worldwide health threat, but progress is being made toward the control of meningococcal infections. This review summarizes current knowledge of the global epidemiology and the pathophysiology of meningococcal disease, as well as recent advances in prevention by new vaccines. Meningococcal disease patterns and incidence can vary dramatically, both geographically and over time in populations, influenced by differences in invasive meningococcal capsular serogroups and specific genotypes designated as ST clonal complexes. BACKGROUND: With an influenza pandemic seemingly imminent, we constructed a model simulating the spread of influenza within the community, in order to test the impact of various interventions.
METHODS: The model includes an individual level, in which the risk of influenza virus infection and the dynamics of viral shedding are simulated according to age, treatment, and vaccination status; and a community level, in which meetings between individuals are simulated on randomly generated graphs. We used data on real pandemics to calibrate some parameters of the model. The reference scenario assume

In this study, we assessed the potential synergistic effect of the Erns RNase activity and the poly-U insertion in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of the low-virulence classical swine fever virus (CSFV) isolate Pinar de Rio (PdR) in innate and adaptive immunity regulation and its relationship with classical swine fever (CSF) pathogenesis in pigs. We knocked out the Erns RNase activity of PdR and replaced the long polyuridine sequence of the 3' UTR with 5 uridines found typically at this position, resulting in a double mutant, vPdR-H30K-5U. This mutant induced severe CSF in 5-day-old piglets a

Senecavirus A (SVA) is a picornavirus that was first isolated in the USA in 2002; however, there is evidence that the virus was circulating in swine herds since 1988. Despite frequent reports of vesicular disease outbreaks caused by SVA infection in swine in Brazil since 2014, there is limited data on the genetic diversity and evolution of the virus in the country. SVA was isolated from swine exhibiting vesicular lesions, with samples originating from farms or slaughterhouses across 57 municipalities in 8 Brazilian states between 2018 and 2022. We obtained 501 SVA genomes through Sanger and Ox

Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) associated with multisystemic clinicopathological diseases in swine herds has caused economic losses and there is no available commercial vaccine. Production of PCV3 capsid protein (Cap) by Spodoptera frugiperda 9 (sf9) cells using baculovirus expression vector system (BEVS) is a valid strategy to develop vaccines. Here, we report that subunit vaccine of PCV3 produced by sf9 cells with double knockout of Caspase-1 and Dronc genes induces strong immune response in mice. Three kinds of knockout sf9 cells aimed at Caspase-1 gene, Dronc gene and both genes were suc

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a significant economic concern for the global cattle industry. This is attributed to the increased risk of transplacental BVDV infection during pregnancy, before sufficient maturation of the fetal immune system. This results in significant reproductive losses via spontaneous abortion as well as the birth of offspring that are persistently infected and immunotolerant to the non-cytopathic BVDV strain. These persistently infected cattle act as reservoirs and are the major source of BVDV transmission within the herd. Previously, we reported bioinformatic anal

BACKGROUND: Between 2007 and 2011 several thousands of calves died from bovine neonatal pancytopenia (BNP), a bleeding syndrome triggered by vaccine induced alloantibodies from the dams. Following withdrawal of the involved bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDv) vaccine, the incidence of this condition rapidly decreased, with no reported cases in the last 5 years. Here, we report a recent immune-mediated pancytopenia in three calves from two different suckler herds, clinically indistinguishable from BNP.

Fifty-two, Hereford heifers were obtained from brucellosis-free herds and randomly assigned to Brucella abortus strain RB51 (RB51) vaccination (n = 32) or control (n = 20) treatments. Vaccinates received 1010 colony-forming units (CFU) of a commercial lyophilized RB51 vaccine. Immunologic responses after inoculation demonstrated significantly greater (P < 0.05) antibody, interferon-γ responses, and proliferative responses to RB51 antigens in cattle vaccinated with RB51 as compared to controls. A subgroup of control and vaccinated cattle were experimentally challenged at approximately 4, 5, and

Asiatic schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma japonicum is a neglected tropical disease resulting in significant morbidity to both humans and animals - particularly bovines - in endemic areas. Infection with this parasite leads to less healthy herds, causing problems in communities which rely on bovines for farming, milk and meat production. Additionally, excretion of parasite eggs in feces perpetuates the life cycle and can lead to human infection. We endeavored to develop a minimally purified, inexpensive, and effective vaccine based on the 80 kDa large subunit of the calcium activated neutr
