Tricotillomania: pathopsychology theories and treatment possibilities.

The phenomenon of hair pulling has been recognized for centuries, yet the true prevalence of trichotillomania (TTM) is largely unknown and the topic has been sparsely studied. TTM is classified as an impulse-control disorder despite much debate about its etiology. In this review we summarize the different hypotheses, including impulse-control disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, behavioral problems and addiction, and the appropriate treatment methods. The combination of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and antipsychotic medications are shown to be most effective. Treatment with an

A closer look to neural pathways and psychopharmacology of obsessive compulsive disorder.

The intricate neural pathways involved in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) affect areas of our brain that control executive functioning, organization, and planning. OCD is a chronic condition that can be debilitating, afflicting millions of people worldwide. The lifetime prevalence of OCD in the US is 2.3%. OCD is predominantly characterized by obsessions consisting of intrusive and unwanted thoughts, often with impulses that are strongly associated with anxiety. Compulsions with OCD encompass repetitive behaviors or mental acts to satisfy their afflicted obsessions or impulses. While these

Emotion regulation and impulsivity evolution during transdiagnostic DBT implementation in addictology - a 3-year naturalistic study.

INTRODUCTION: Addictive and eating disorders are the two deadliest psychiatric disorders. Emotional dysregulation and impulsivity are central processes in both disorders. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies play a key role in the development and maintenance of these disorders. The standard treatment for emotion regulation is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT); its implementation is often a challenge, but transdiagnostic groups can facilitate it. Due to the lack of data available on these groups in addictology, our study aimed to determine whether emotional dysregulation and impulsivity

The Presence of Externalizing Diagnoses Increases the Risk of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Youth Enriched for Early-Onset Depression.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the additional impact of externalizing diagnoses and specific externalizing symptoms (eg, impulsivity, irritability) on risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in a sample of youth enriched for depression. METHOD: Participants included 219 children from the Pediatric Suicidality Study, which has followed a sample of preschoolers enriched for depression into early adolescence (ages 10-14 years). Semistructured interviews to assess STBs and clinical diagnoses including major depressive disorder (MDD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and oppositi

Impulsivity in spontaneously hypertensive rats: Within-subjects comparison of sensitivity to delay and to amount of reinforcement.

Previous research has shown that spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) display higher levels of impulsive choice behavior, which is accompanied by a higher sensitivity to the delay of reinforcement, and by a normal sensitivity to the amount of reinforcement. Because those results were based on three different samples of subjects, in the present report we evaluated these three processes in the same individuals. SHR and WIS rats were exposed to concurrent-chains schedules in which the terminal links were manipulated to assess impulsivity, sensitivity to delay, and sensitivity to amount. For expl

Shared neurogenetic substrates of nonplanning impulsivity and procrastination.

Procrastination has a maladaptive impact on health and survival, yet it remains moderately heritable, presenting a biological paradox. Procrastination has been conceptualized as a byproduct of impulsivity, explaining its prevalence despite no discernible adaptive benefit. However, their shared neurobiological substrates have yet to be elucidated. Using a longitudinal twin cohort (N = 154), we show that nonplanning impulsivity (NPI) during late adolescence and early adulthood is prospectively associated with procrastination in later life. This effect was independently replicated in two cross-se

Understanding borderline personality disorder: Clinical features, neurobiological insights, and therapeutic strategies.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex personality disorder characterised by immense emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, aggression and substantial interpersonal difficulties. This review begins with examining DSM-5-TR diagnostic clusters for BPD, highlighting the importance of accurate classification. It provides an in-depth analysis of BPD, starting with its epidemiology, diagnostic subtypes, core symptoms, and the challenges these symptoms pose for patients and their support networks. The review explores common co-occurring conditions, such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders

Unveiling common psychological characteristics of proneness to aggression and general psychopathology in a large community youth cohort.

Elevated aggression in individuals with psychiatric disorders is frequently reported yet aggressive acts among people with mental illness are often intertwined with proneness to aggression and other risk factors. Evidence has suggested that both general psychopathology and proneness to aggression may share common psychological characteristics. This study aims to investigate the complex relationship between general psychopathology, proneness to aggression, and their contributing factors in community youth. Here, we first examined the association between proneness to aggression and the level of

Pupillary dilations in a Target/Distractor visual task paradigm and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

ADHD is a neurocognitive disorder characterized by attention difficulties, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, often persisting into adulthood with substantial personal and societal consequences. Despite the importance of neurophysiological assessment and treatment monitoring tests, their availability outside of research settings remains limited. Cognitive neuroscience investigations have identified distinct components associated with ADHD, including deficits in sustained attention, inefficient enhancement of attended Targets, and altered suppression of ignored Distractors. In this study, we exami

Structural hyperconnectivity of the subthalamic area with limbic cortices underpins anxiety and impulsivity in Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics, which is often associated with psychiatric comorbidities. Dysfunction of basal ganglia pathways might account for the wide spectrum of symptoms in TS patients. Although psychiatric symptoms may be related to limbic networks, the specific contribution of different limbic structures remains unclear. We used tractography to investigate cortical connectivity with the striatal area (caudate, putamen, core and shell of the nucleus accumbens), the subthalamic nucleus (STN), and the adjacent medial subthalam

Potential Biomarkers of impulsivity in mild traumatic brain injury: A pilot study.

Very few studies have investigated cognition and impulsivity following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in the general population. Furthermore, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying post-TBI neurobehavioral syndromes are complex and remain to be fully clarified. Herein, we took advantage of machine learning based-modeling to investigate potential biomarkers of mTBI-associated impulsivity. Twenty-one mTBI patients were assessed within one-month post-TBI and their data were compared to 19 healthy controls on measures of impulsivity (Barratt Impulsiveness Scale - BIS), executive functioning

Effects of short-term nicotine deprivation on delay discounting among young, experienced, exclusive ENDS users: An initial study.

Delay discounting describes how rapidly delayed rewards lose value as a function of delay and serves as one measure of impulsive decision-making. Nicotine deprivation among combustible cigarette smokers can increase delay discounting. We aimed to explore changes in discounting following nicotine deprivation among electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) users. Thirty young adults (aged 18-24 years) that exclusively used ENDS participated in two laboratory sessions: one with vaping as usual and another after 16 hr of nicotine deprivation (biochemically assessed). At each session, participant

Resting State EEG Activity Related to Impulsivity in People with Prescription Opioid Use Disorder.

Previous studies on EEG activity in prescription opioid use disorder (OUD) have reported neuronal dysfunction related to heroin use, most consistently reflected by increases in β-brain oscillations. As similar research has yet to examine EEG associated with non-medical use of prescription opioid and as inhibitory deficits are associated with OUD, this pilot study compared quantitative EEGs of 18 patients with prescription OUD and 18 healthy volunteers and assessed relationships between oscillatory activity and impulsivity with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11). Spectral EEGs showed grea

Impulsivity, Emotion Regulation, Cognitive Distortions and Attentional Bias in a Spanish Sample of Gambling Disorder Patients: Comparison between Online and Land-Based Gambling.

Several risk factors have been related to the onset and maintenance of gambling disorder (GD). The aim of this study was to explore the differences in emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, cognitive distortions, and attentional bias between online and land-based gamblers. The sample consisted of 88 treatment-seeking patients from the Behavioral Addictions Unit at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Barcelona (Spain). Patients were divided into two groups by considering their main type of gambling, i.e., online (n = 26) and land-based gambling (n = 62). Online gamblers were younger, more of

Moderating Effect of Impulsivity on the Association Between Entrapment and Problem Gambling.

Impulsivity as measure by delay discounting and entrapment have been known to influence gambling, but their individual and joint influence on problem gambling among Soccer gamblers are not yet understood. We examine the direct and moderation influences of entrapment and delay discounting on problem gambling among 174 Soccer gamblers in Nigeria. Data were obtained by means of self-report questionnaires of entrapment, delay discounting and problem gambling. Results from Hayes PROCESS moderated regression showed that delay discounting moderated the association between entrapment and problem gambl

Impulsivity and neural mechanisms that mediate preference for immediate food rewards in people with vs without excess weight.

People with excess weight (overweight or obese; body mass index [BMI]>25) are generally characterized as impulsive with regards to food. However, the underlying brain mechanisms of this impulsivity are not fully understood. As such, this study aims at understanding the neural mechanisms underlying impulsivity toward food rewards, as well as differences in delay discounting patterns for hypothetical food between people with vs without excess weight. To this end, participants (79 college students, 33 with excess weight and 46 without) performed a food delay discounting task and completed questio

Stop! - The automatic tendency of action, inhibition and frontal activation in individuals with alcohol-use disorder in abstinence.

Studying the functioning of the frontal lobe during the performance of an inhibitory activity according to automatic tendency of action would allow a better understanding of the relationship between the reflexive and impulsive system described in the dual-process models. This study aims to prove which is the inhibitory capacity and the underlying brain activity of people with alcohol-use disorder in abstinence with a greater avoidance tendency compared to those with a higher approach tendency and healthy controls. In order to group participants with AUD, the total approach/avoidance index (TAA

Sleep quality and its clinical associations in trichotillomania and skin picking disorder.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania (TTM) is characterized by recurrent hair pulling and associated hair loss. Skin picking disorder (SPD) is characterized by recurrent skin picking and associated scarring or tissue damage. Both disorders are also accompanied by psychological distress and poor sleep. Very little, however, is known about lifestyle variables that may contribute to symptom severity in these disorders. METHODS: We recruited 87 adults as part of a cross-sectional study of 3 groups (TTM, SPD, and non-affected). Clinical subjects (n=69) were compared with controls (n=18) on sleep quality a
