PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship of smoking, urbanicity, and diabetes to presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) and associated choroidal neovascularization (CNV).
METHODS: Medical records of 751 adult patients with POHS were reviewed, including 603 patients without CNV and 148 patients with CNV. GOAL: This study measures HIV and syphilis screening rates among Medicaid patients diagnosed with another sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Mice with a null mutation in the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) gene harbor immunoglobulin and T cell receptor repertoires essentially devoid of N-region diversity. Consequently, the CDR3 loops important for antigen recognition are shorter and considerably less diverse than those of wild-type controls. We find surprisingly normal immune responses in TdT0 mice, as regards both efficiency and specificity. This provokes a reconsideration of the assumption that N-region diversity is required for an effective T and B cell repertoire.

We quantitatively analyzed the interference interactions between defective interfering (DI) particles and mutants of cloned vesicular stomatitis virus passaged undiluted hundreds of times in BHK-21 cells. The Semliki Forest virus spike subunit E2, a membrane-spanning protein, was transported to the plasma membrane in BHK cells after its carboxy terminus, including the intramembranous and cytoplasmic portions, was replaced by respective fragments of either the vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein or the fowl plague virus hemagglutinin. The hybrid proteins were constructed by cDNA fusion. Two strains of the agent were isolated from pools of Phlebotomus papatasi collected in Iran in 1975.
