Medical problems associated with prematurity are frequently complex, and a multidisciplinary approach is often required. Some common problems include the following: (1) anemia, which can be reduced by iron supplementation, (2) cerebral palsy or mental retardation as a result of intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia, (3) respiratory problems, including bronchopulmonary dysplasia and apnea, (4) visual problems, such as those associated with retinopathy of prematurity, (5) gastroesophageal reflux and (6) surgical problems, including inguinal or umbilical hernia and cryptorch

Fetal swallowing of amniotic fluid, which contains numerous cytokines and growth factors, plays a key role in gut mucosal development. Preterm birth interrupts this exposure to amniotic fluid-borne growth factors, possibly contributing to the increased risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in premature infants. We hypothesized that supplementation of formula feeds with amniotic fluid can provide amniotic fluid-borne growth factors and prevent experimental NEC in rat pups. We compared NEC-like injury in rat pups fed with infant formula vs. formula supplemented either with 30% amniotic fluid o…

Cronobacter is an emerging bacterial pathogen associated with infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis, and meningitis in neonates and infants, related to the consumption of powdered infant formula. In addition, this bacterium can also cause infections in adults by the ingestion of other foods. Thus, this review article aims to report the occurrence and prevalence of Cronobacter spp. in foods of plant origin, as well as the possible sources and routes of contamination in these products, and the presence of pathogenic strains in these foods. Cronobacter was present in a wide variety…

INTRODUCTION: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is the safest infant feeding option in resource-limited settings, though women living with HIV have the lowest rates of EBF. Barriers to EBF in the absences of a formal intervention in women living with HIV in KwaZulu-Natal, where the prevalence of HIV among pregnant women is among the highest in the world, are understudied. Thus, this study sought to describe barriers to EBF and examine differences in social support, disclosure status, mood, and HIV-related stigma among women with different feeding methods.
METHODS: Women living with HIV enrolled i

Phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) are used in some personal care products (PCPs) and containers for food processing and packaging. The Plastics and Personal-Care Product use in Pregnancy (P4) Study (2009-10) explored the association between PCP use during pregnancy and the postpartum period among 80 pregnant women and 55 infants and BPA and phthalate concentrations in multiple maternal and infant urine specimens collected throughout the study (n = 1260 samples). The type, frequency, and timing of PCP and food packaging use 24 h before and during the urine collection period was collected at 5 ti

We studied the relationship of low birth weight (LBW) to concordance of mother's feeding intentions during pregnancy with actual feeding practices; initiation of breast-feeding; and patterns of feeding in the first 6 mo. Data came from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey, which followed 3080 mother-infant pairs from urban and rural communities of Metro Cebu, Philippines. We used logistic regression to estimate the effects of LBW on feeding practices, controlling for place of delivery (home, public or private health facility), receipt of free infant formula samples; infant sex, ur…

When infant rhesus monkeys were exposed to lead via the addition of lead acetate (0.5-9 mg/kg body weight) to their formula or by the consumption of lead particles from lead-based surrogate mothers, they developed symptoms of lead intoxication within 6 weeks. Seizures, muscular tremors, and altered social interaction were the predominant changes. Visual impairment was also apparent in the more severely affected animals. In the animals showing obvious symptoms lead levels varied between 300 to 500 mug/100 ml of blood. Even in those animals having blood lead levels below 100 mug, hyperactivity a

Mothers with eating disorders can face additional challenges with infant feeding, and there is evidence they are likely to cease breastfeeding earlier than intended. However, there is little research exploring this. The present study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the lived experience of infant feeding for mothers suffering from or recovering from an eating disorder. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six women-five who had breastfed and one who formula-fed. The women experienced two incompatible worlds-motherhood and an eating disorder. Tensions were somet

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the descriptive epidemiology of infant botulism, the flaccid paralysis that results when neurotoxigenic Clostridium species produce botulinum toxin (BoNT) in the infant colon, in its first 40 years following initial recognition in California in 1976.
STUDY DESIGN: Cases were defined by laboratory identification of BoNT and/or neurotoxigenic Clostridium species in patients' feces. Parents were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive epidemiologic characteristics were compared between 1976-1996 and 1997-2016.
RESULTS: From 1976-2016, 1345 cases of infa

Background: Human milk-derived fortifiers (HumBMF) are an alternative to bovine protein-based fortifiers (BovBMF) for preterm infants, but their comparative effectiveness and safety remain uncertain. We evaluated the effects of HumBMF versus BovBMF in preterm or very low birth weight infants. Methods: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing use of HumBMF versus BovBMF to fortify human milk were identified through four databases and three trial registries (to 11 May 2026). At least two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. Fixed-effect meta-a

OBJECTIVE: To detect changes in splanchnic perfusion and oxygenation induced by 2 different feeding regimens in infants with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and those without IUGR.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a randomized trial in 40 very low birth weight infants. When an enteral intake of 100 mL/kg/day was achieved, patients with IUGR and those without IUGR were randomized into 2 groups. Group A (n = 20) received a feed by bolus (in 10 minutes), then, after at least 3 hours, received the same amount of formula by continuous nutrition over 3 hours. Group B (n = 20) received a feed administe

BACKGROUND: Neonatal weight loss is universally recognized, yet poorly understood. Limited professional consensus exists on the definition of lower limit of safe weight loss.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to assess the extent of neonatal weight loss and its association with selected clinical variables in a population of healthy term infants cared for using a specific protocol on weight loss.
METHODS: We retrospectively considered 1003 infants consecutively admitted to the regular nursery of the Institute for Maternal and Child Health "Burlo Garofolo" (Trieste, Italy). We studied the relationship of

The analysis of perinatal studies is complicated by twins and other multiple births even when they are not the exposure, outcome, or a confounder of interest. Common approaches to handling multiples in studies of infant outcomes include restriction to singletons, counting outcomes at the pregnancy-level (i.e., by counting if at least one twin experienced a binary outcome), or infant-level analysis including all infants and, typically, accounting for clustering of outcomes by using generalised estimating equations or mixed effects models. Several healthcare administration databases only support

Human milk banks play an essential role by providing human milk to infants who would otherwise not be able to receive human milk. The largest group of recipients are premature infants who derive very substantial benefits from it. Human milk protects premature infants from necrotizing enterocolitis and from sepsis, two devastating medical conditions. Milk banks collect, screen, store, process, and distribute human milk. Donating women usually nurse their own infants and have a milk supply that exceeds their own infants' needs. Donor women are carefully selected and are screened for HIV-1, HIV-2

The content of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) in human milk, cow's milk and cow's-milk-based infant formulas was determined by radioimmunoassay. The mean levels of IGF-I in full-term milk and preterm milk 0-4 days post partum 2.2 +/- 0.3 and 2.4 +/- 0.5 ng/mg protein, respectively. The IGF-I content in human milk was not affected by gestational age or birth weight and was constantly excreted up to 10 days post partum. The IGF-I content in human milk was significantly higher than that in cow's milk (0.6 +/- 0.1 ng/mg protein, p less than 0.01). IGF-I was not detected in the milk formulas.…

Nineteen infants were challenged during their convalescence from severe diarrhea with a lactose-containing meal. Twenty-four hour intake, pre- and post-challenge breath H2 levels, clinical responses, and growth were measured at approximately biweekly intervals for 3 months beginning 1 month after hospital discharge. Ten lactose-tolerant infants were assigned randomly to receive one of two formulas similar in composition except for carbohydrates: lactose (Group L) (n = 6) and sucrose (Group S) (n = 4). Infants in Group L had greater intakes and growth rates during the initial 15 days of the stu

BACKGROUND: While special educational needs (SEN) are increasingly recorded among schoolchildren, infant breastfeeding has been associated with reduced incidence of childhood physical and mental health problems. This study investigated relationships between infant feeding method and risk of all-cause and cause-specific SEN.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: A population cohort of schoolchildren in Scotland was constructed by linking together health (maternity, birth, and health visitor records) and education (annual school pupil census) databases. Inclusion was restricted to singleton children, born in S
