In cases of severe acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure and hepatic encephalopathy, liver transplant can be the only real hope for neurologic recovery and indeed survival. In such cases, the bioethical principles of beneficence and justice often come into conflict. This article examines a case in which a neurologist managing an acetaminophen-overdose patient in the neurologic intensive care unit is faced with a conflict between her patient's need for a liver transplant and the needs of other patients on the transplant list.

This study compiled 33 verified spider bites from the state of Oregon (USA). The initial goal was to amass a series of bites by the hobo spider to assess whether it possesses toxic venom, a supposition which is currently in a contested state. None of the 33 bites from several spider species developed significant medical symptoms nor did dermonecrosis occur. A 57-year-old man was referred to the Department of Psychiatry & Psychology of a university hospital because of recurrent depressive episodes. He claimed to have had a total amnesia for approximately the first 30 years of his life following an incident resembling a fugue. This case of a focal retrograde amnesia shows the limitations of a dichotomic view of organic, psychogenic and intentional factors.

BACKGROUND: Intentional injury presents a threat to the physical and psychological well being of young people, especially in developing countries, which carry the greatest part of the global injury burden. While the importance of this problem is recognized, there are limited population data in low and middle income countries that can guide public health action. The present study investigates the prevalence and distribution of intentional injury among young people in three Pacific Island societies, and examines behavioural and psychosocial factors related to risk of intentional injury.

BACKGROUND: Although little empiric evidence has been published concerning the efficacy of blood donor recruitment materials, research suggests that simple attempts to enhance knowledge may not be sufficient to motivate donation. In contrast, recent donor motivation studies highlight the importance of anxiety, attitudes, and perceived ability to cope with donation (i.e., self-efficacy) as crucial determinants of donation intention. Therefore, recruitment materials that specifically address these constructs have the potential to outperform traditional educational brochures.

Intentional replantation is an accepted endodontic treatment procedure in which a tooth is extracted and treated outside the oral cavity and then inserted into its socket to correct an obvious radiographic or clinical endodontic failure.
