Street workers and internet escorts: contextual and psychosocial factors surrounding HIV risk behavior among men who engage in sex work with other men.

Sex work has been associated with elevated risk for HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in many settings. This mixed methods study examined sexual risk among MSM sex workers in Massachusetts, collecting formative data on HIV risk behavior by sex worker type in order to gain a better understanding of how to tailor prevention interventions to this unique and high-risk subgroup of MSM. Two groups of MSM sex workers were recruited between January and March 2008: street workers (n=19) and internet escorts (n=13). Participants completed a semistructured qualitative interview and quan

Noninferiority Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Three Delivery Formats of a Rehabilitation Intervention to Reduce Fatigue Among Individuals With Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare 3 delivery formats of a rehabilitation intervention in reducing fatigue: (1) synchronous group sessions via audio-only teleconference, (2) asynchronous group sessions delivered online, and (3) synchronous 1-to-1 sessions delivered in-person or videoconference. The primary hypothesis was that group-based teleconference and internet formats would be noninferior to the 1-to-1 format. DESIGN: Decentralized, randomized, noninferiority trial with assessments at baseline, 2, 3, and 6 months. SETTING: Community-based adults in Midwestern United States. PARTICIPANTS: A total of

An internet-based adolescent depression preventive intervention: study protocol for a randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of major depressive disorder in adolescents and the low rate of successful treatment highlight a pressing need for accessible, affordable adolescent depression prevention programs. The Internet offers opportunities to provide adolescents with high quality, evidence-based programs without burdening or creating new care delivery systems. Internet-based interventions hold promise, but further research is needed to explore the efficacy of these approaches and ways of integrating emerging technologies for behavioral health into the primary care system. METHODS/DESIG

Gender differences in use and expectancies of e-cigarettes: Online survey results.

INTRODUCTION: Given the rapid increase in e-cigarette use, it is important to understand factors that may contribute to their initiation and maintenance. Because gender differences in tobacco use, product preferences, and expectancies are well established, similar gender differences may exist with e-cigarettes. The aim of this study was to identify gender differences among e-cigarette users in patterns of use, reasons for initiation and maintenance, and outcome expectancies regarding e-cigarettes. METHODS: Participants (N=1815) completed an online survey from August through November, 2013. We

A cluster randomized trial in general practice with referral to a group-based or an Internet-based smoking cessation programme.

BACKGROUND: Reviews state that there is a room for improvements of smoking cessation (SC) intervention in general practice. METHODS: In 2005, all 61 general practitioners (GPs) in four municipalities in Copenhagen, Denmark, were invited to participate. Twenty-four GPs accepted and were cluster randomized to one of three groups: Group A, referral to group-based SC counselling (national model), n = 10; Group B, referral to internet-based SC programme (newly developed), n = 8; or Group C, no referral ('do as usual'), n = 6. A total of 1518/1914 smokers were included, and 760 returned a questionn

Effectiveness of an internet-based intervention to improve sleep difficulties in a culturally diverse sample of international students: A randomised controlled pilot study.

Sleep difficulties are widespread among international students. Internet-based interventions are suggested as a low-threshold treatment option but may require cultural adaptation among culturally diverse populations. The present pilot study investigated the effectiveness and acceptance of an internet-based intervention to improve sleep difficulties in international students. A total of 81 international students of 36 nationalities were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 41) or waitlist control group (n = 40). The intervention group received immediate access to a culturally non-adapted

Role of the Internet in Solving the Last Mile Problem in Medicine.

Internet-augmented medicine has a strong role to play in ensuring that all populations benefit equally from discoveries in the medical sciences. Yet, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collected from 1999 to 2014 suggested that during the first phase of internet diffusion, progress against mortality has stalled, and in some cases, receded in rural areas that are traditionally underserved by medical and broadband resources. This problem of failing to extend the benefits of extant medical knowledge equitably to all populations regardless of geography can be framed as the "l

Promoting oral HIV self-testing via the internet among men who have sex with men in China: a feasibility assessment.

OBJECTIVES: The HIV prevalence among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) is high, while the HIV testing rate is low. HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a promising means of scaling up HIV testing among MSM in China, as the ability to test in private is appealing to many individuals. We evaluated the feasibility of promoting oral HIVST via the internet in the MSM population. METHODS: From April 2013 to April 2014, MSM in two major cities in China were recruited for an observational study with assessment at baseline and follow-up. Data were collected via questionnaire, oral HIVST, and clinic-based

Preferences for Internet Plus Nursing Services Among Nurses and Patients in China: A Systematic Review of Discrete Choice Experiments.

BACKGROUND: Against the backdrop of an aging population, the traditional nursing model struggles to meet diverse needs. Despite the significant social benefits of internet plus nursing services, misaligned preferences between nurses and patients hinder their widespread adoption. Discrete choice experiments (DCEs) are a key tool for quantifying stakeholder preferences and improving service adoption. No review has systematically synthesized evidence on patients' and nurses' preferences for internet plus nursing services. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review DCEs conducted in China that examined

Internet-facilitated interventions for informal caregivers of patients with neurodegenerative disorders: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

ObjectiveThis systematic review explored the effectiveness of internet-delivered interventions in improving psychological outcomes of informal caregivers for neurodegenerative-disorder (ND) patients.MethodsWe searched seven databases for English-language papers published from 1999 to May 2021. Study-eligibility required that interventions used a minimum 50% internet-facilitation, targeting unpaid, adult informal caregivers of community-based ND-patients. We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and pre-post evaluative studies reporting outcomes for at least one-time point post-intervent

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with aphasia symptoms due to neurodegenerative dementia are under-referred for speech-language therapy (SLT) services. We sought to determine the feasibility of utilizing telepractice, via Internet video conferencing, to connect an individual with progressive aphasia due to dementia to a speech-language pathologist for treatment. METHODS: Participants received an Initial Evaluation, 8 person-centered Internet-based SLT sessions and two Post-Therapy Evaluations. The feasibility of providing web-based SLT, strategies used and their compliance, functional gains and the

Breast cancer information on the internet: analysis of accessibility and accuracy.

Studies show internet sourced information often has poor accuracy. However, it is rapidly becoming a major source of patient information. Our aim was to assess accuracy of breast cancer-related information on the internet. The top five breast cancer-related search terms were identified using the commercial program "Wordtracker". These terms were searched using the search-engine "Google" and the top 100 webpages per topic analysed for applicability and accuracy of information. Overall 500 webpages were analysed. 42% were inapplicable to the question asked. Applicable accuracy rates were variabl

Health literacy contributes to empowerment, better care, and self-management of one's own health and can be developed using digital technologies. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to map scientific evidence about the use of digital technologies to promote health literacy and the empowerment of ICs. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The CINAHL, MEDLINE, Scopus, and PubMed databases were searched to fin
