It's a privilege to smile: impact of cleft lip palate on families.

In this article we describe prior cross-sectional and longitudinal research conducted with children who were born with cleft lip and/or palate and their families in the United States and internationally. The findings and clinical implications from different times and cultures are synthesized using the Biopsychosocial Model. Our primary aim is to summarize the attachment styles, cognitive, psychological and social functioning, self-concept, neurological functioning, and speech difficulties prevalent among individuals who are born with cleft lip/palate at different developmental stages (e.g., in

Family processes that shape the impact of interparental conflict on adolescents.

This study draws on the family systems concepts of triangulation and wholism to investigate how interparental conflict may affect adolescents' psychological adjustment. An ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample (N = 388) of 14- to 18-year-olds completed measures of interparental conflict, family relationships, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems. We found that triangulation into parental disagreements mediated the association between parental conflict and both internalizing and externalizing problems. Adolescents exposed to more frequent, intense, and poorly resolved co

It's time to replace the personality disorders with the interpersonal disorders.

Personality disorders (PDs) are among the most common and severe classes of psychopathology. From a clinical perspective, it is challenging to help individuals with personality disorders because treatment ruptures, discontinuation, reversals, and failures are relatively common. An additional clinical challenge is that the model used to diagnose personality disorders is demonstrably incorrect. Recent efforts to improve diagnosis of personality disorders apply two criteria: the first distinguishes personality disorders from other kinds of psychopathology and the second distinguishes different ty

Polyvictimization Profiles and Variations in Youth Mental Health Symptoms: A Person-Centered Approach.

Polyvictimization, exposure to multiple potentially traumatic events (PTEs), is prevalent and has profound mental health implications. Investigating the patterns and impact of co-occurring PTEs during childhood is essential to design and deliver tailored clinical services. This study included a diverse community sample of 326 youth (ages 7-16). Latent class analysis (LCA) of DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) criterion A events was conducted to identify PTE classes. Classes were further characterized using race-related, peer, and dating victimization, and psychopathology symptoms (PTSD

Smartphone behavior and loneliness among older couples in China: Actor-partner interdependence modeling.

BACKGROUND: Much evidence suggests that smartphone behavior is associated with loneliness, but no studies have examined the relationship at the dyadic level in Chinese older couples. The aim of this study is to determine whether smartphone behavior is associated with loneliness in individuals and their spouse. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 202 older couples from two community healthcare centers in Chengdu, China, between October 2022 and May 2023. The actor-partner interdependence model (APIM) was constructed to investigate the interdependent effect between smartphone behavior

Trapped Within the Couple: The Complex, Dissociative, and Dissonant Experience of Intimate Partner Sexual Violence.

Sexual violence (SV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are widely recognized as major public health and societal concerns. Yet, although sexual violence is often examined within broader IPV frameworks, the specific experiential features of intimate partner sexual violence (IPSV) remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine women's lived experiences of IPSV and the meaning-making processes through which coerced sexuality is understood and (sometimes) acknowledged as violence. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with two women who experienced

Differences in Oxytocin Response Between a Group of Friends and a Group of Strangers Following Facilitated Drum Circle Activities.

BACKGROUND: Participation in arts-related activities has been shown to positively influence the well-being and social connectedness of young people. However, few studies have explored the neuroendocrinological changes that might contribute to these benefits. In this exploratory study, we assessed oxytocin (OT) and cortisol (CORT) responses in children experiencing facilitated drum circle activities for the first time. These activities involve imitation and coordinated movement, which are known to increase OT levels. Additionally, OT levels are associated with behavioral synchrony and affiliati

Role of interpersonal tactile and visual interaction in modulating postural sway and enhancing stability.

Manual support and interpersonal interaction can enhance postural stability during upright standing, yet it remains unclear how tactile and visual interactions influence the temporal organization of postural control. We used a 2 × 2 factorial design manipulating interpersonal touch (Touch vs. No Touch) and partner visibility (Visible vs. Invisible) while participants stood quietly in pairs. Center-of-pressure velocity time series were analyzed using linear and nonlinear methods, including recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Both tactile interactio

Romantic relationships matter more to men than to women: Based on Darwinian gender differences of fitness-enhancing effects in having sexual partners.

This commentary argues that the explanations for some important gender differences in romantic relationships offered in the target article are proximate instead of ultimate à la Mayr (). Combined with the ultimate ones based on Darwinian evolution, it offers a deeper understanding of the relevant factors. Other relevant factors include the higher availability of female prostitutes, cultural differences between the East and the West, and that women have menopause around the age of mid-40s.

Is the House You Were Born in Your Destiny? Exploring the Dynamics of Family-of-Origin Experiences, Dysfunctional Relationship Beliefs, and Marital Satisfaction.

This study focuses on marital satisfaction, a key concept often used to assess happiness and stability in a marriage. The main goal of this study was to explore the mediating processes linking experiences in the family of origin to marital satisfaction. A total of 357 married individuals participated in the research. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing marital satisfaction, family-of-origin experiences, and dysfunctional relational beliefs. The study's model was analyzed using structural equation modeling. The mediation analysis suggests that experiences in the family o

Couple Relationships and Interaction During Pregnancy: A Comprehensive Review of Key Relational Dynamics.

Pregnancy is a transformative period that profoundly affects couple relationships and interactions. While this phase may strengthen intimacy and mutual understanding between partners, it also introduces significant physiological, psychological, and social stressors that can challenge relationship satisfaction and overall well-being. The dynamics of couple relationships during pregnancy affect not only the partners' emotional and mental health but also pregnancy outcomes, family functioning, and postnatal adaptation. A growing body of research has examined various aspects of couple relationship

Joint action with human versus robot partners across psychological domains: a systematic review.

When they act together, people engage a myriad of cognitive and social processes which are increasingly investigated in various areas of psychological and neuroscientific research. The study of human-robot joint action holds promises not only in terms of applying findings to robotics but also providing innovative methodologies that can help disentangle the determinants of human-human joint action. But, how does acting jointly with a robot compare to co-acting with a human? Research investigating this question is sparse and an overview of relevant findings is missing. Therefore, this paper prov

Physiological synchrony predicts reduced reciprocity only in face-to-face interactions.

Across species, cooperative decisions are often asymmetric: one individual risks their own resources before knowing whether others will reciprocate. Such uncertainty is central to the evolution of trust and reciprocal exchanges. Physiological synchrony is frequently assumed to support cooperation, yet it remains unclear both how synchrony arises and how it functions in these asymmetric social interactions. We tested whether mutual visibility shapes physiological synchrony, and whether synchrony in turn predicts cooperative behaviour in repeated trust-reciprocity exchanges. Skin conductance syn

Couple-Based Interventions on Intimacy Among Cancer Survivors and Their Partners: A Scoping Review.

Intimacy challenges affect cancer survivors and their partners but remain overlooked in care. Couple-Based Interventions (CBIs) aim to enhance intimacy. This scoping review mapped the literature on CBIs, identifying intervention components, delivery formats, measurements, and research gaps following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Thirty-two studies published from inception to January 2026 were included. Most were conducted in Western countries and focused on breast a

Quantifying the dyadic interaction: A methodological framework for conducting observational moment-by-moment research.

Systematic observation is a valuable method for studying interactive phenomena in dyads, as it captures sequences of behavior, potentially enhancing validity. However, observational studies remain underutilized compared with other tools, such as self-report questionnaires, because they require time and resources. This work aims to facilitate observational research by providing a step-by-step guide for preprocessing and exploring data from systematic observations, enabling flexible data handling beyond traditional sequential analyses. To illustrate the guide's application, we used a dataset of

"One Can Have All Sorts of Good Intentions but Sometimes in Everyday Life, It Turns Out Differently": Change Agreements in Couples' Everyday Lives.

Online couple interventions are increasingly used to support couples experiencing relationship distress. However, little is known about how couples integrate intervention elements into their everyday lives. This longitudinal qualitative study examined how distressed parenting couples integrate change agreements developed in the online OurRelationship program. Six couples (12 participants) were included in the study. Data consisted of one coach session, as well as two rounds of individual interviews conducted 3-6 weeks and 6-7 months after program completion. Using longitudinal interpretative p

It's the cost that counts! Young children's reciprocity is sensitive to subjective cost.

Three experiments investigated whether reciprocity in children aged 4-7 (N = 192; 53.12% female; 65.63% White) is sensitive to the cost of a gift from the benefactor's perspective. In the main study, 6- and 7-year-olds, but not 4- and 5-year-olds, preferred to reward a benefactor who valued a gift highly over one who gave an identical gift but valued it less. A follow up study found that 5- but not 4-year-olds at least expected object valuation to impact sharing. In the third study, 6- and 7-year-olds even rewarded a benefactor whose gift they themselves (the children) valued less (than anothe

A dynamical systems model of emotional contagion: Oscillatory coupling in the circumplex of affect.

BACKGROUND: Emotional contagion plays a crucial role in shaping group dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and affective regulation. Mathematical models of affect and agent-based models of emotional contagion are well established, but fewer formulations combine a continuous valence-arousal representation, explicit multi-agent coupling, time-continuous interaction dynamics, and mechanically interpretable dynamical parameters within a single framework. OBJECTIVE: This study develops a mathematical and computational model of emotional contagion that integrates intra-individual affective dynami…

Artificial intelligence for relational reconnection and social support in Alzheimer's disease: a conceptual framework for socially embedded systems.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has traditionally been approached through a biomedical lens, focusing on neurodegenerative markers such as amyloid-β plaques and tau protein accumulation. However, clinical evidence increasingly demonstrates that social dysfunction, which includes identity confusion, emotional withdrawal, and breakdowns in social roles. This article reconceptualizes AD as a disorder in which the primary dimension of decline lies in social relationship management capacity (SRMC), while recognizing that neurobiological and cognitive deterioration remain integral to its manifestation and
