METHODS: This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews (IDIs) and key informant interviews (KIIs) to explore the motivations

Epidemiology and prognostic implications of panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder in patients with coronary artery disease: rationale and design for a longitudinal cohort study.

Due to their severity and chronic course, anxiety disorders, particularly generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD), are of considerable interest and clinical importance in this population. This study has two main objectives: (1) to estimate the prevalence and incidence of GAD and PD in patients with CAD over a 2-year period and (2) to prospectively assess the association between PD or GAD and adverse cardiac events, treatment adherence, CAD-related health behaviors, quality

Adaptation, Resilience, and Secure Attachment States of Mind in Young South African Female Students Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence in Childhood.

Much research details the psychological risks to individuals exposed as children to intimate partner violence (IPV). However, resilience has been a neglected area of study within this population. This article details adaptive responses in six participants exposed to IPV in childhood. Adult attachment interviews (AAI) and follow-up semi-structured interviews analyzed using an interpretive thematic analysis revealed common themes relating to psychological defenses and adaptive strategies. Despite exposure to IPV in childhood, these six women were found to have secure attachment states of mind. R

DESIGN: This was a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and focus groups. SETTING AND PATIENTS: This study was comprised o

Self-harm and attempted suicide among UK armed forces personnel: results of a cross-sectional survey.

AIMS: Little has been reported on self-harm among the UK Armed Forces, partly due to the difficulties in recording self-harm, within an often-difficult-to-reach population. This study assesses the lifetime prevalence of attempted suicide and self-harm within currently serving and ex-service personnel of the UK Armed Forces. METHODS: Telephone interviews were conducted with 821 personnel who had previously participated in the King's Centre for Military Health Research military health study. Within the telephone interview, participants were asked about attempted suicide and episodes of self-har

[Epidemiology of comorbid mental disorders in rehabilitation patients with musculosceletal and cardiovascular diseases].

An association between mental disorders, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases has been reported in many clinical studies with inpatients. However, no data exist about the prevalence of mental disorders in patients undergoing rehabilitation treatment for musculoskeletal and cardiovascular diseases. The present study investigates 4-week, 12-month and lifetime prevalence rates of comorbid mental disorders in more than 1700 patients out of 10 rehabilitation clinics. The patients were screened (GHQ-12, HADS) in the context of a two-stage epidemiological survey. In the second-stage examinatio

The development of attachment in separated and divorced families. Effects of overnight visitation, parent and couple variables.

This study represents the first systematic investigation of the effects on infant attachment to mother and to father of the increasingly common practice of overnight visitation (time-sharing) with the father in separated and divorced families. There were 145 infants (ages 12 to 20 months) and their mothers (and 83 fathers) who participated in the study. Parents completed questionnaires, were interviewed about their relationship with the baby, and were observed with their infants in the Strange Situation. Infants in separated/divorced families who had regular overnight visits with father (n = 4

A randomized controlled comparison of integrative cognitive-affective therapy (ICAT) and enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E) for bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this investigation was to compare a new psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa (BN), integrative cognitive-affective therapy (ICAT), with an established treatment, 'enhanced' cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E). METHOD: Eighty adults with symptoms of BN were randomized to ICAT or CBT-E for 21 sessions over 19 weeks. Bulimic symptoms, measured by the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), were assessed at baseline, at the end of treatment (EOT) and at the 4-month follow-up. Treatment outcome, measured by binge eating frequency, purging frequency, global eating disorder sever

Psychiatric Comorbidity, Sexual Dysfunction, and Quality of Life in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Due to disabilities caused by the disease and the requirement of dialysis, end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is frequently comorbid with psychiatric disorders, adversely affects quality of life, and causes significant sexual dysfunction (SD). We aimed to investigate the psychiatric comorbidity, quality of life, depression and anxiety levels, and SD in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS: Forty-nine patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment in a dialysis center and 44 non-ESRD control subjects selected with snowball sampling were enrolled in the study. All subjects were
