A 22-year-old man developed severe haematemesis 21 years after colon interposition for long-gap oesophageal atresia. A fistula, from an anastomotic ulcer to the descending thoracic aorta, was discovered and treated successfully by surgical resection. This previously unreported complication highlights the need for the prevention of peptic complications following oesophageal replacement in children.

A case of Potter syndrome secondary to renal agenesia and duodenal atresia with anular pancreas is presented. The karyotype was 47 XY-21. We discuss the antenatal diagnosis and the perinatal management.

Intraabdominal calcifications are an unusual radiographic finding in the newborn and can easily be misinterpreted as meconium peritonitis. The authors refer to a patient with anorectal malformation (ARM), intraluminal calcifications and other anomalies. Careful differentiation of the type of intraabdominal calcifications can suggest the possibility of other initially unsuspected anomalies.

Congenital duodenal obstruction, a common complication of Down syndrome, most often presents as neonatal bilious vomiting. We report the first premature infant with Down syndrome whose duodenal atresia presented with a massive hematemesis secondary to duodenitis. Since a plain radiograph of the abdomen is diagnostic in the case of duodenal obstruction, it should be included in the diagnostic workup of hematemesis in newborn infants.

The pre-operative finding of biliary ductal dilatation in the setting of multiple gastrointestinal atresias has not been previously reported. This paper illustrates the sonographic findings in two neonates with multiple gastrointestinal atresias from the prepyloric region to the rectum. Biliary ductal dilatation was seen in both patients and highly echogenic, mobile intraluminal bowel debris secondary to calcified meconium was evident in one. Post-operative biliary gas was demonstrated on sonography in one case.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the differences in cardiovascular disease, extracardiac anomalies and outcomes between fetuses with levocardia and dextrocardia.
METHODS: Clinical demographics, prenatal features, postnatal characteristics and the outcomes of fetuses with levocardia or dextrocardia were recorded and analyzed.
RESULTS: Sixty-five fetuses with dextrocardia and thirty-eight fetuses with levocardia were enrolled. Right ventricle outlet obstruction, atrioventricular septal defect and intestinal malrotation were common in both groups. Univentricular physiology, transposition of the great

Nasogastric (NG) decompression has traditionally been used after major abdominal surgery in pediatric patients. This study was designed to determine if NG tubes could be routinely omitted in pediatric patients undergoing major abdominal procedures. Between January 1993 and December 1995, 83 patients had follow-up prospectively without NG decompression after a variety of major abdominal surgeries. NG tubes were inserted for persistent vomiting or abdominal distension. Exclusion criteria included bowel obstruction, intestinal atresia, and perforation of the stomach or duodenum. Ages ranged from …

Between 1960 and 1994 cystic fibrosis was found in nine out of 1474 infants investigated for neonatal cholestasis. Four had delay in passing meconium. In all patients cholestatic jaundice was present during the first 48 hours and in three patients cholestasis was complete, mimicking biliary atresia. Serum cholesterol concentrations were normal in all but two children. Sweat chloride was repeatedly above 95 mmol/l in all instances. Three children had another condition enhancing the risk of cholestasis (alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency, hypopituitarism, perinatal asphyxia, and total parenteral nutr

AIMS: Congenital colonic stenosis (CCS) is an extremely rare cause of low-intestinal obstruction in neonates/child. We report our experience with seven cases of CCS presenting with low-intestinal obstruction and diagnosed intraoperatively and also propose an algorithm for its appropriate treatment for the adequate outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: It was a retrospective study of seven patients of CCS including two neonates (5-days and 15-days old), four infants (age range - 2-11 months), and one 24-month-old child admitted from 2014 to 2019. Information regarding the age of presentation, clinic

INTRODUCTION: This is a retrospective analysis of therapeutic approaches and treatment outcomes of congenital abdominal wall defects (omphal … patients. Two patients required a staged abdominal wall closure. One patient with gastroschisis and intestinal atresia underwent primary closure after partial intestinal resection and enterostomy. Based on these responses, a management protocol (algorithm) was recommended. The most common postoperative complication, in 7 cases of omphalocele, was mechanical ileus (n …

BACKGROUND: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) continues to be one of the most challenging problems in pediatric surgery. Intestinal transplantation (IT) seems to be the best form of treatment for this pathology. However, it is thought that the development of an IT program may be more expensive than the present manner of treatment.
METHODS: To assess this item, and to identify potential candidates for IT, we reviewed the charts of all the patients with SBS treated at our Institute from 1989 to 1994.
RESULT: Nine patients were identified as carriers of SBS; six with intestinal atresia, two with midgu…

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) with Kasabach-Merrit syndrome from a large hepatic hemangioma is life-threatening. We report a case of giant hepatic hemangioma of the newborn with KMS.
RESULTS: The patient was born at 37 gestational weeks and 2 days via cesarean section; weight at birth was 2952 g. Congenital duodenal atresia was noted during the fetal period. DIC developed after delivery and a giant liver hemangioma was diagnosed via abdominal CT. The cause of DIC was Kasabach-Merritt syndrome owing to a giant hepatic hemangioma. First, combination therapy of 2 mg/kg

We present a case of incomplete duodenal obstruction having a delayed presentation, making diagnosis and early intervention more challenging. Failure of recanalization of the duodenal lumen during the eighth to tenth week of gestation, results in duodenal atresia. Incomplete recanalization can lead to duodenal stenosis or the presence of a duodenal web. In the absence of other serious anomalies or prematurity, the overall survival for duodenal stenosis or atresia is nearly 100%.

In the department of Paediatric Surgery, Sophia Children's Hospital, University Hospital, Rotterdam, we investigated whether the presence of Down's syndrome influenced the chances of survival of patients with a congenital duodenal obstruction. The retrospective study comprised all 109 patients admitted to the Sophia Children's Hospital with a congenital duodenal obstruction in the period 1971-1989. The additional presence of Down's syndrome itself did not influence the prognosis. The presence of other additional anomalies (especially cardiac anomalies) did influence the mortality rate. In the

Atresia of the colon was first described in the literature. The authors present 4 cases seen at the paediatric surgery division of the Regina Margherita Children's Hospital in Turin. After a brief discussion of the embryology, attention is focused on the treatment of this malformation.
