Intestinal neuronal dysplasia is a rare cause of bowel obstruction in neonates and infants, the diagnosis of which poses a formidable challenge to both clinicians and pathologists alike. The importance of this entity lies not only in the fact that it mimics Hirschsprung's disease, but also in that untreated cases, particularly of type A, may prove fatal. The authors describe one such case of intestinal neuronal dysplasia of type A, which was diagnosed at autopsy.

In this study of fecal samples from 1000 children below 6 years of age, 680 (68.0%) detected to have intestinal helminthic infection. The incidence of intestinal helminthiasis in urban group of children was 56.8% (284 out of 500 tested) while in rural group of children was 79.2% (396 out of 500 tested). Both in rural and urban population Ascaris lumbricoides was the single predominant species, whereas a combination of A. lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura was common multiple infection. All cultures of fecal samples positive for hook worm ova revealed the prevalent species as Necator american

Neonatal intestinal obstruction due to a tumour is rare. We report a six-day-old male neonate who presented with abdominal distension and vomiting. Laparotomy revealed colonic obstruction caused by a stenosing fibrotic lesion in the proximal transverse colon. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed fibromatosis. We believe this represents the third reported case of solitary colonic fibromatosis. The literature on neonatal intestinal fibromatosis is reviewed.

Intestine transplantation has evolved into a feasible alternative for children with permanent intestinal failure and life-threatening complications related to total parenteral nutrition. Although the first transplantations were done nearly 40 years ago, long-term survival has only been achieved in the last decade. Nearly 700 intestinal transplantations have been performed internationally since 1985, with an overall patient survival of greater than 50%. Improvements in patient selection, medical management, and assessment and treatment for rejection and infection have contributed to the increas

Giardia intestinalis is a common parasite in our country and the rest of the world and is responsible for several clinical disturbances that include dysentery type diarrheas, recurrent abdominal pain, duodenitis, jejunitis, cholecystitis and in some cases toxemias and convulsions. In this paper we review recent concepts of intestinal giardiasis, considering the basic aspects of the biology and physiology of Giardia intestinalis, its morphology and its relationship the parasite pathogenicity. We detail the physiopathological mechanisms responsible for the different clinic manifestations of giar

Genetically determined variation in host capacity to express resistance to a given parasite plays a major role in determining the outcome of infection. It can be assumed that the same is true of variation in parasites, but very much less is known of its influence on the host-parasite relationship. Phenotypic and genotypic variation within species of intestinal worms is now well documented, detailed studies having been made of parasites such as Ascaris in humans and trichostrongyles in domestic animals. However, the extent to which this variation affects the course of infection or the host immu

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal obstruction due to tuberculosis is a rare form of mechanical bowel obstruction. The objectives of this study were to determine the clinical features, to evaluate the role of surgery and to choose procedures in management of this disease.
METHODS: In this 7-year retrospective study (from 1992 to 1998), 23 patients (20 males, three females) were included, accounting for 4.5% of all mechanical intestinal obstructions. More than 80% of the patients had a clinical picture of lower small bowel obstruction, while 90.5% of patients had advanced pulmonary tuberculosis.
RESULTS:

The gastrointestinal tract plays an important role in the mucosal immune response. While acting as a conduit allowing the transfer of nutrients from the intestinal lumen to the systemic circulation, it also protects against invasion by microbes and other antigens by the induction of an immune response. A downregulation of these immune responses to nonharmful antigenic substances is termed oral tolerance. A breakdown or underdevelopment of oral tolerance may therefore lead to the development of food allergy. Adverse immunologic reactions to food may be a consequence of both IgE- and non-IgE-med

The morphology, pathogenesis, complications and differential diagnosis of an intestinal polyp of the umbilical cord are presented. The polyp were detected postnatal on the umbilical cord in an healthy male newborn. The presents of intestinal tissue upon the umbilical cord ist possible about the persistence from remnants of the ductus omphalomesentericus with prolapse and differentiation of the intestinal cells. The ductus omphalomesentericus is a tubular structure, a communication between the developing embryonic gut and the yolk sac, forming during the early embryonic life. Obliteration of th

The last year has seen new approaches to the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of protozoal infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the news is not good: new foodborne and swimming pool outbreaks of cyclosporiasis and cryptosporidiosis, respectively, occurred in North America; paromomycin was shown to be ineffective treatment for cryptosporidiosis; and these parasitic diseases continued to have a worldwide impact on human health. On the bright side, there were important advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of cryptosporidiosis and the diagnosis of amebiasis and giardi

Laparoscopic bowel surgery has developed slowly over the last decade, with virtually all procedures having been attempted with these laparoscopic techniques. The benefits of this approach to colorectal surgery have resulted in decreased lengths of stay, smaller incisions, and a potentially lower risk of small bowel obstruction. Resection of benign inflammatory disease presents particular challenges and may be expected to result in higher conversion rates. However, with increasing experience, even complicated diverticular disease and Crohn's disease can be managed laparoscopically. There is a g

UNLABELLED: The understanding of mechanisms responsible for alterations in mucin synthesis and secretions is essential in elucidating the aetiology of intestinal disorders. The existence of distinct mucins and M-cell transport mechanisms, and their beneficial effects, have long been recognised. Since nutritional and bacterial factors alter the mucin characteristics and are relevant to planning preventative strategies for intestinal diseases, the studies described in this monograph were designed to test the hypothesis that mucin composition and endocrine status of the intestinal tract are alter
