A Novel Approach for the Treatment of Radiation-Induced Hemorrhagic Cystitis with the GreenLightTM XPS Laser.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of pelvic malignancies with radiotherapy can develop severe sequelae, especially radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. It is a progressive disease that can lead to the need for blood transfusion, hospitalizations, and surgical interventions. This tends to affect the quality of life of these patients, and management can at times be difficult. We have evaluated the GreenLight Xcelerated Performance System (XPS) with TruCoag, although primarily used for management of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), for the treatment of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. Efficacy and safety of single-session argon plasma coagulation in the management of chronic radiation proctitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic radiation proctitis (CRP) manifests as rectal bleeding 12 to 24 months after pelvic radiotherapy. No criterion standard of treatment has been established, although argon plasma coagulation (APC) has increasingly become the treatment of choice. Previous studies have applied APC over multiple sessions, necessitating increased numbers of treatments. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of large-volume APC application in the treatment of CRP with the intention of a single-session treatment protocol. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital. PAT

The role of focal liver ablation in the treatment of unresectable primary and secondary malignant liver tumors.

Surgical resection is often the first-line treatment option for primary and select metastatic hepatic malignancies. A minority of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma undergo potentially curative resection. Similarly, patients with liver-only metastasis are candidates for resection less than 15% of the time because of bilobar disease in which resection would sacrifice too great a volume of hepatic parenchyma, tumor proximity to major vascular or biliary structures thus preventing adequate margins, or unfavorable tumor biology. Ablative techniques directed at tumor elimination while minimizin

Macular Hole as a Complication Following Laser Photocoagulation for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Complications after laser photocoagulation for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are rare but do occur. To the best of our knowledge, we report a previously unreported case of a unilateral macular hole that developed after resolution of an exudative retinal detachment that resulted from laser photocoagulation for ROP. Confluent laser patterns in ROP in infants who have previously received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor may result in adverse outcomes such as exudative retinal detachments. Even more rarely, a macular hole may develop. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina.

Case Series: West African Crystalline Maculopathy.

SIGNIFICANCE: West African crystalline maculopathy is a rare crystalline maculopathy without a clear etiology. Although the crystals do not appear to be visually significant, there may be a role in the breakdown of the blood-retina barrier within the pathogenesis of this disorder. PURPOSE: The purpose of this case series is to describe two cases of West African crystalline maculopathy. These crystals do not affect vision, nor visual function. Because there are only 39 other documented cases in the literature, it is imperative to understand the differences and similarities in this rare maculop

Update on the Use of Anti-VEGF Drugs in the Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the many significant consequences of premature birth and remains one of the leading causes of visual impairment in infants. Originally, cryotherapy was used to prevent the complications of vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment. Subsequently, laser photocoagulation, which is at least as effective and possibly safer than cryoretinopexy, was adopted as the primary treatment for type 1 ROP (stage 2 or 3 disease in zone II with plus disease or any stage disease in zone I with plus disease or stage 3 disease in zone I without plus disease). Morphological Changes and Potential Mechanisms of Intraocular Pressure Reduction after Micropulse Transscleral Cyclophotocoagulation in Rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Micropulse transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) is a method for intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction in patients with glaucoma; however, the specific mechanisms underlying its ability to reduce IOP remain unclear. We therefore investigated the morphological changes and mechanisms of IOP reduction after MP-TSCPC. METHODS: The right eyes of 4 pigmented rabbits were treated with MP-TSCPC with power setting corresponding to those used in glaucoma patients (1 power: 2,000 mW; time: 160 s; duty cycle: 31.3%). Power settings of 1, 1/8, 1/16, and 1/32 power were applied to the
