PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of sliding vermilion flap in angulus oris defect after buccal mucosal cancer ablation.
METHODS: A total of 33 patients with buccal mucosal cancer who underwent buccal mucosal cancer radical surgery and resection of angulus oris, and reconstructed with free anterolateral thigh flap transfer and sliding vermilion flap were collected from January 2015 to April 2021 in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Second Xiangya Hospital. Thirty-three patients with buccal mucosal cancer admitted to Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Second Xiangya Hosp

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of upper labial myomucosal defects is surgically challenging.
AIMS: We evaluated whether central defects could be repaired using bilateral, buccinator myomucosal advancement flaps (b-BMAFs).
METHODS: We evaluated five patients with early-stage, minor salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinomas (low-grade [n = 2], intermediate-grade [n = 2], and high-grade [n = 1]) who underwent central, upper labial myomucosal reconstruction using b-BMAFs after cancer ablation. We treated two men and three women aged 25-59 years. Tumors ranged in size from 1.8 × 1.8 to 2.5 × 2.2 cm. C

BACKGROUND: Lower lip defects between one and two thirds of the lower lip are usually reconstructed with neighboring tissues from the upper lip, cheeks, or the mentum or a combination of these tissues. In this article, we offer a simple and effective reconstruction option that can be used for lateral defects between one third and two thirds of lower lip tissue. Utilizing the tremendous flexibility and expandability of the lip tissue, we tried to minimize the incisions and scar, and maximize the sensation and function with transverse advancement flap.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignancy related to the lips (95%), and the lower lip is more commonly involved. Loss of tissue in the lower lip is treated with a variety of techniques, depending on the extension and location of the defect. This was a prospective case series. In this study, 41 patients with squamous cell carcinoma (30 males, 11 females) who were referred to Razi Hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences between 2007 and 2008 and underwent lower-lip reconstruction were included. Defects were divided into 4 groups: less than 30%, between 30% and 50%, between

A case of Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome in a seven-month-old male infant presented with the features of epibulbar dermoid, microtia and hemifacial microsomia associated with thumb defect. The dermoid was bilateral and microtia was unilateral. Preauricular appendages and pits were double and single respectively on both the sides. Hemifacial microsomia was unilateral and was associated with cleft lip, macrostomia, dental misalignment, large tongue and high arched palate. The association of hypoplastic thumb with Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome has not been documented in the past.

A case of hypomelia, hypotrichosis and facial hemangioma (pseudothalidomide S.) is presented, which according to bibliography consulted, is the first case in Spain and the tenth mentioned in world literature. A differential diagnosis with dysostosis is proposed. Authors described characteristic traits of the patient and indicate differences with those presented in previous publications emphasizing association with cleft lip, absence of eyes anomalies, and normal neurological development. The importance of the administration of tetracyclines and spiramycins to the mother during first month of g

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of L1-2ND in the management of the lower lip squamous cell carcinoma and to achieve the highest cure rates with adequate neck dissection.
METHODS: A retrospective review was completed on patients treated between 1994 and 2014. The case histories of 184 patients who were treated with surgical excision of the primary tumor along with neck dissection, and 24 patients who were treated only with surgical excision without neck dissection at another center, were studied. All patients were followed up for evidence of recurrent disease.
RESULTS: In 208 patients (193

BACKGROUND: Some regions of Spain along with Canada and Australia have the highest rates of lip cancer in the world. The objective of this study was to examine the trends in the pattern of occurrence of lip cancer in Madrid, Spain.
METHODS: Data were extracted from the Central Tumour Registry of Madrid, between 1990 and 2011. Variables examined were age, sex, topographic and morphological location and tumour histology. Two consecutive periods, 1990-2001 and 2002-2011, were studied by descriptive and analytical methods, and the data from the two periods were statistically compared.
RESULTS: A

OBJECTIVE: The management of the neck in patients with T1-T2 carcinoma of the lower lip (LLC) remains controversial. Suprahyoid neck dissection seems a reliable diagnostic approach, although it sacrifices the submandibular gland and its vascularity.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: This study was a prospective, randomized study. Patients with previously untreated T1 or T2 primary LLC underwent either classical suprahyoid neck dissection (CSHD) or functional suprahyoid neck dissection (FSHD) in continuity with the resection of the cancer of the lip.
RESULTS: A total of 48 suprahyoid neck dissections

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare, histologically distinct, soft tissue malignancy with nonspecific clinical features usually described as a nonulcerated, painless, expanding mass. It has a pseudoalveolar appearance with clustered polygonal cells lacking central cohesion. It accounts for approximately 0.5 to 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. It has a strong predilection for adolescents and young adults 15 to 35 years old, with a female predominance. In general, ASPS grows slowly, with a predilection for the trunk and extremities and rarely in the head and neck region. A literature revi

Cancer of the head and neck region presents a challenge since, unlike other areas of the body, the boundaries are not always easy to delineate. The functional morbidity associated with head and neck cancer and its treatment are considerable. Head and neck cancer is described as cancer of the lip, mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx (unspecified), salivary gland, hypopharynx, larynx and other. Oral cancer refers to cancers of the lip, tongue, gingivae, floor of the mouth, palate (hard and soft), maxilla, vestibule and retromolar area up to the anterior pillar of the fauces (tonsil). When patients pr

Hungary is the leader both in oral cancer morbidity and mortality among the European countries. Oral cancer mortality had increased dramatically in Hungary to near fourfold between 1975 and 2002 both among the male and female populations. The increased oral cancer morbidity among the non-smoker, non-drinker elderly women and young adults, suggest that factors other than tobacco and alcohol consumption may also have important role in the pathogenesis of oral cancer. To reveal the epidemiological changes oral cancer cases and tumor-free controls were studied in the Department of Oral and Maxillo
