The coordination chemistry of magnesium (Mg2+) was extensively explored. More recently; magnesium; which plays a role in over 80% of metabolic functions and governs over 350 enzymatic processes; is becoming increasingly linked to chronic disease-predominantly due to magnesium deficiency (hypomagnesemia). Supplemental dietary magnesium utilizing biorelevant chelate ligands is a proven method for counteracting hypomagnesemia. However, the coordination chemistry of such bio-relevant magnesium complexes is yet to be extensively explored or elucidated. It is the aim of this review to comprehensivel…

BACKGROUND: Nutritional deficiencies are common after bariatric surgery, but few studies have examined them preoperatively. The objective of this study was to evaluate several vitamins, nutrients, and nutritional markers and their determinants in patients with obesity considering bariatric surgery.
METHODS: Preoperative values of fasting plasma glucose, insulin, lipid profile, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), parathyroid hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, calcium, phosphate, albumin, magnesium, total proteins, liver function tests, iron, ferritin, folate, vitamin A, vitamin B12, selenium, an

Pregnant women in developing countries are vulnerable to multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Studies assessing serum levels of the micronutrients and magnitude of their deficiencies are very scarce in African subjects. This study was aimed at determining serum levels of micronutrients in 375 pregnant (42 HIV seropositive) and 76 non-pregnant women (20 HIV seropositive) who visited the University of Gondar Hospital, Gondar, Ethiopia. Serum concentrations of zinc,\ copper, selenium, calcium, and magnesium were determined using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Irrespective of HIV

Zinc, copper, and magnesium concentrations in hair were measured in groups of children varying in one condition--protein-energy malnutrition, ricketts, thalassemia, malignancy, cardiac failure, or after prolonged infection and in healthy controls. As compared with controls, copper and magnesium concentrations were low in all groups, whereas higher values were obtained for hair zinc. These results showed that a generalized copper and magnesium deficiency were observed in the southeastern part of Turkey. However, zinc deficiency couldn't be detected as far as the hair zinc values were concerned,…

The authors report a case of ventricular tachycardia (VT) induced by theophylline toxicity in a patient with ischaemic heart disease complicated by left ventricular failure and chronic asthma. Two episodes of VT were reduced by intravenous injection of magnesium chloride. The aggravating role of a moderate magnesium deficiency is suggested by the synergy of hypomagnesemia and theophylline on intracellular calcium fluxes contributing to an accumulation of intracytoplasmic calcium, a situation which has been shown experimentally to generate delayed after depolarisations. The respective roles of …

Metabolic balance studies were performed in two groups of 6 rats each, pair-fed a diet deficient in potassium. While one group was injected with desoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) for 11 days, the other group, used as a control, was injected with oil. The administration of DOCA suppressed or reversed the thirst, natriuresis, diuresis, calciuria and magnesiuria that developed in the potassium-deficient control group. Potassium-depleted DOCA-treated rats had a more positive water and sodium balance, experienced a significant expansion in plasma volume, had a more negative potassium balance and

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is significantly greater in rats fed a magnesium-deficient diet than in rats on a magnesium-rich diet. The hearing loss was found to be negatively correlated with the magnesium concentration of the perilymph. It is suggested that also in man, the magnesium concentration in the perilymph may be of importance in determining susceptibility to NIHL.

We have examined the effects of decreasing the magnesium concentration in the medium on bone resorption in organ culture. During a 5-day culture, low magnesium (0.25 vs. 0.8 mM) caused a decrease in unstimulated 45Ca release from live and killed fetal rat bones for the first 2 days but not thereafter, suggesting an early and transient alteration in physicochemical equilibrium for calcium between bone and extracellular fluid in magnesium deficiency. In addition, 45Ca release in response to low and intermediate doses of PTH and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 was significantly impaired throughout the 5…

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency may contribute to the metabolic bone disease that complicates chronic cholestatic liver disease. We hypothesized that magnesium deficiency alters vitamin D metabolism by decreasing parathyroid hormone (PTH) response, resulting in decreased serum osteocalcin and decreased bone accretion.
METHODS: Nine subjects, age 3-22 years, with cholestatic liver disease were evaluated with the magnesium retention test. The response of PTH, 1,25(OH)2 vitamin D, and osteocalcin to provocative stimuli and dual x-ray absorptiometry measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) of t…

Magnesium deficiency, and to a lesser extent magnesium excess, is commonly encountered in patients admitted to the Acute Medical Unit. It is important that acute physicians are able to identify those at risk of these states and initiate appropriate investigation and treatment. This article aims to provide the reader with a sound understanding of magnesium physiology and its effect at a cellular level. The causes, symptoms and treatment of magnesium disorders are discussed along with a review of evidence regarding the therapeutic use of magnesium.

Magnesium deficiency is seen with some frequency in the outpatient setting and requires oral repletion or maintenance therapy. The purpose of this study was to measure the bioavailability of four commercially-available preparations of magnesium, and to test the claim that organic salts are more easily absorbed. Bioavailability was measured as the increment of urinary maginesium excretion in normal volunteers given approximately 21 mEq/day of the test preparations. Results indicated relatively poor bioavailability of magnesium oxide (fractional absorption 4 per cent) but significantly higher an…

1. Eighty-one hospital patients receiving digoxin were separated into groups with and without digoxin toxicity using clinical criteria. Seru … f toxic subjects were receiving concomitant diuretic therapy (20/21 vs 37/60, P less than 0.05). 4. Magnesium deficiency was the most frequently identified significant electrolyte disturbance in relation to digoxin toxicity. In the presence of magnesium deficiency digoxin toxicity developed at relatively low serum digoxin concentrations.

Parenteral magnesium load tests were conducted on 91 infants less than one month of age, most of whom had marked hyperirritability and symptoms compatible with the diagnosis of electrolyte imbalance with relative or absolute magnesium deficiency. Most of the patients studied had a 40-hour test, with an eight-hour preload and a 32-hour postload collection of urine. Of 43 premature infants studied, only three retained less than 40 per cent of the load: one was untreated, one had low retention of a second load following a course of therapy, and the mother of the third had received magnesium withi…

BACKGROUND: Magnesium deficiency is common in type 2 diabetes and may have a negative impact on glucose homeostasis and insulin resistance, as well as on the evolution of complications such as retinopathy, thrombosis and hypertension.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the dietary magnesium intake of patients with type 2 diabetes in Zurich, Switzerland and to compare the magnesium intake of diabetic and non-diabetic subjects.
DESIGN: The magnesium intake of 97 randomly selected patients with type 2 diabetes and 100 healthy, non-diabetic controls matched for age and sex was estimated using a diet history m…

A positive influence of magnesium in the prevention and treatment of hyperactivity in children is more and more frequently raised in the lit … ermined in blood serum, red blood cells and in hair with the aid of atomic absorption spectroscopy. Magnesium deficiency was found in 95 per cent of those examined, most frequently in hair (77.6 per cent), in red blood cells (58.6 per cent) and in blood serum (33.6 per cent) of children with ADHD. The conclusion from the investigations is that magnesium deficiency in …
