20 patients with advanced carcinomas of the oral cavity (T3NxMo) were treated at the same time with the cytostatic drugs bleomycin and methotrexate as well as with a cobalt-60-irradiation. 14 of them are tumor free after an observation period of one half to two and a half years. Among them were 4 recurrences that had to be treated surgically. 1 patient is living with a residual tumor which cannot be further treated. 5 patients died of the tumor or of other causes. The survival rate, which is 80% after 1 year, is, as a tentative result, higher than could be attained by other therapeutic measure

PURPOSE: Resection of the posterior mandible for tumor or osteonecrosis may include the mandibular condyle, an integral part of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Condylar reconstruction, including use of prostheses, the native condylar head, or part of the fibula, all have associated drawbacks including skull base erosion and the potential for ankylosis and TMJ dysfunction as well as the increased difficulty associated with trying to recapitulate the TMJ with high fidelity. We report our experience leaving a single side of the reconstructed mandible unsecured to the glenoid fossa, allowing th

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the visibility of the superior and inferior borders of mandibular canal using panoramic radiography (PR) and cross-sectional computed tomography (CT) images.
STUDY DESIGN: Digital panoramic images and cross-sectional CT images of 100 patients were evaluated. The mandibular canal was divided into 4 areas of equal width (1-4), from anterior to posterior. The visibility of the superior and inferior borders was assessed using a 5-point visibility scoring system, with lower scores for worse visibility.
RESULTS: For both modalities, the superior border showed significantly l

PURPOSE: The surgical management of some head-and-neck pathology affects a patient's form and fundamental function and, eventually, the quality of the individual's daily life. Restoring mandibular continuity after resection will improve form, function, and eventually, quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of our limited restoration with immediate plate reconstruction after segmental mandibular resection on the QOL of patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 13 patients were included in the study. They were treated for benign but aggressive mandibular pathol

Numb chin syndrome is an uncommon presentation that has been reported as secondary to metastatic disease, trauma, and infections of the maxilla, mandible, or oral cavity. The hypoesthesia, paraesthesia, or pain are a result of injury to the inferior alveolar nerve, which is particularly vulnerable as it exits the mandible through the mandibular foramen as the mental nerve. In persons with sickle cell disease, it has been reported as a manifestation of mandibular vaso-occlusive crisis. This case series presents 13 patients with sickle cell disease who presented with numb chin syndrome, the larg

INTRODUCTION: Virtual planning and guided surgery (VPGS) has been recently developed for mandibular reconstruction, but benefit remains to be assessed. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of VPGS on operative time and postoperative course.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients who underwent fibula free-flap mandibular reconstruction between 2013 and 2014 in our institution were included in a retrospective study. Operative times and postoperative course were compared between patients who underwent conventional surgery in 2013 and those who underwent VPGS in 2014.
RESULTS: A total of

Mandibular condylar osteochondroma (OC) can result in morphological and functional disturbances, including facial asymmetry and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of endoscope-assisted tumour resection and conservative condylectomy via an intraoral approach. Seven patients with condylar OC were enrolled in this study. Endoscope-assisted tumour resection and conservative condylectomy were achieved intraorally, and no conventional extraoral incision was needed. Direct vision of the magnified and illuminated operative field was realized

A 66-year-old osteoporotic woman suffered from long-term mental paresthesia (numbness), facial swelling, and a nonhealing extraction site. Fulfilling the three clinical diagnostic criteria for bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ; exposed bone for at least 8 weeks, current bisphosphonate [risedronate] treatment, and no history of head and neck radiation therapy), she was diagnosed and treated accordingly. Nevertheless, a later histopathologic examination revealed malignant lymphoproliferative infiltration of large and intermediate cells. Based on immunostaining and positron-e

Primary intraosseous adenoid cystic carcinoma (PIACC) of the mandible is an exceptionally rare malignancy. While radical surgery and radiotherapy provide locoregional control, managing distant metastases remains challenging due to the lack of standard systemic therapies and the characteristically "cold" immune microenvironment of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). We report the case of a 62-year-old male diagnosed with PIACC of the mandible presenting with synchronous bilateral pulmonary metastases (Stage IVC). Following radical resection and adjuvant radiotherapy, the patient received first-line

BACKGROUND/AIM: To investigate the feasibility of establishing a mandibular osteosarcoma model in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats using tissue block transplantation, providing a foundational model for osteosarcoma research.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen male SD rats, 3 weeks old and SPF grade, were randomly divided into a control group (n=4) and a mandibular osteosarcoma group (n=10). Using tissue block transplantation, UMR106 cell-induced tumor tissues were transplanted subcutaneously into the left mandibular marrow cavity of the SD rats. Observations included behavioral changes, weight variation

Numb chin syndrome (NCS) is a rare presentation of primary or recurrent malignant neoplasms among other non-neoplastic causes. The syndrome is characterized by altered sensations in the distribution of the mental nerve and presents with pain and paresthesias along the distribution of the inferior alveolar nerve and its branches. The primary diagnosis is indicated while following up patients through positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) when a hypermetabolic focus is seen in the vicinity of the angle of the mandible. Further anatomical localization is performed using magneti

This is a case report on a 26-year-old woman with metastatic mandibular osteosarcoma to the lung. A video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) completion left upper lobe lobectomy was attempted, but was converted to a thoracotomy when anomalous pulmonary vein drainage (APVD) was identified. There were no other anomalies found and the lobectomy was completed as planned. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of an attempted VATS lobectomy for patients with APVD. This case demonstrates that APVD tends not to be associated with any other anatomic abnormalities in the lung and should not

The fibular free flap is seen as one of the foremost technical options in mandibular reconstruction, especially in those defects where long bone is required. Cases with squamous-cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth with mandibular spread and subsequent segmentary mandibular removal are the cornerstone examples. A case of squamous-cell carcinoma of the whole floor of the mouth with mandibular invasion is reported. Radical resection of the floor of the mouth and bilateral mandibular horizontal ramus was performed, with a bony defect extending from angle to angle. The patient revealed an acho

Opercula of permanent first and second molars delayed in eruption were investigated histologically to detect possible causes of eruption failure. The material comprised operation specimens from exposure of 74 non-erupted molars in 63 young individuals (34 boys, 29 girls). Eighteen of the 74 specimens (or 24.3%) were diagnosed as "classical" odontogenic tumors belonging to the following entities: ameloblastic fibroma (seven), ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (six), ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (four) and complex odontoma (one). Twenty-two specimens (or 29.7%) showed a hitherto unrecognized odontogeni

Topographically, the AOT occurs in peripheral and central variants, the latter further in follicular (with embedded tooth) and extrafollicular (no embedded tooth) types. The AOT is slow growing with few or no symptoms. Tumor growth may cause displacement of teeth rather than root resorption. The follicular AOT mimics a follicular cyst, the extrafollicular a residual or "globulo-maxillary" cyst and the peripheral a gingival fibroma. All variants of AOT show identical histologic features. The central variants account for 97.2%, 73.0% of which are follicular. The follicular variant (M:F ratio 1 t
