Maternal antibiotic exposure during pregnancy is a risk factor for community-acquired urinary tract infection caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in infants.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for community-acquired urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive bacteria in infants. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of infants aged < 1 year with first UTI from 2018 to 2019 at two tertiary centers in Korea. Data analyzed included clinical findings, birth history, delivery mode, milk type, use of postpartum care center, and previous use of antibiotics both in the patient and mother. RESULTS: Of 265 patients, 62 (23.4%) were diagnosed with first UTI caused by

Maternal exposure to fine particulate air pollution induces epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition resulting in postnatal pulmonary dysfunction mediated by transforming growth factor-β/Smad3 signaling.

Fine particles from air pollution, also called particulate matter, less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter (PM2.5), are a threat to child health. Epidemiological investigations have related maternal exposure to PM2.5 to postnatal respiratory symptoms, such as frequent wheezing, chronic cough, and lung function decrements. However, only few experimental animal studies have been performed to study the effects of PM2.5.The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal exposure to PM2.5 on postnatal pulmonary dysfunction in a rat model and to examine the mechanism of PM2.5-induced mor…

Maternal Nrf2 and gluthathione-S-transferase polymorphisms do not modify associations of prenatal tobacco smoke exposure with asthma and lung function in school-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy has detrimental effects on the respiratory health of infants and children. Polymorphisms of antioxidant genes including glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) have been proposed as candidates for asthma and reduced lung function in children. METHODS: Women enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children reported smoking habits during pregnancy. Asthma status in their children was established at age 7.5 years from parental reports and lung function was measured by spirometry at age 8.5 years. Maternal and child DNA were genotyped for del

Moderating effects of maternal-infant interaction on the relationship between adverse neonatal exposures and the development of autistic behaviors at follow-up: A preterm birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm-birth infants have elevated risks of autistic behaviors compared to term-birth infants. While neonatal adverse exposures and the morbidity burden in the neonatal intensive care units are often used to forecast neurodevelopmental outcomes including autism, the extent to which post-discharge maternal psychosocial health and mother-infant interactions mitigate early autistic behaviors remains unclear. AIM: To examine whether the maternal psychosocial status and maternal-infant interaction at 6 months moderate the association between neonatal morbidity exposures and autistic b

Impact of maternal lifestyle factors on newborn HPRT mutant frequencies and molecular spectrum--initial results from the Prenatal Exposures and Preeclampsia Prevention (PEPP) Study.

Epidemiological studies have demonstrated associations between maternal tobacco smoke exposure and consumption of alcohol during pregnancy and increased risk of pediatric malignancies, particularly infant leukemias. Molecular evidence also suggests that somatic mutational events occurring during fetal hematopoiesis in utero can contribute to this process. As part of an ongoing multi-endpoint biomarker study of 2000 mothers and newborns, the HPRT T-lymphocyte cloning assay was used to determine mutant frequencies (Mf) in umbilical cord blood samples from an initial group of 60 neonates born to

Transfer kinetics, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in laying hens: A laboratory-to-field validation and dietary exposure assessment.

Chlorinated paraffins (CPs), particularly short- and medium-chain CPs (SCCPs and MCCPs), are emerging persistent organic pollutants with increasing concerns for the environment and food safety. However, the toxicokinetics of CP congener groups in food-producing animals remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted a 14-day exposure and subsequent 28-day depuration feeding study in laying hens to elucidate the kinetics, tissue distribution, and maternal transfer of SCCPs and MCCPs. The results showed that CPs accumulated rapidly in eggs, and clean feeding effectively reduced CP burdens with SCCP

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Its Association with Sociodemographic Factors, Awareness and Exposure Practices Among Pregnant Women Attending Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya.

Background:Toxoplasma gondii infection during pregnancy may lead to congenital toxoplasmosis and serious pregnancy complications. In Kenya, however, toxoplasmosis is not screened during routine antenatal care, and there is limited local data on maternal seroprevalence and associated risk factors. This study determined the seroprevalence of T. gondii infections. It examined its association with socio-demographic, obstetric characteristics, awareness levels, and exposure behaviours among pregnant women visiting the antenatal clinic at Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. Low maternal education increases the risk of Type 1 Diabetes, but not other autoimmune diseases: a mediating role of childhood BMI and exposure to serious life events.

The objective of this paper was to investigate if socioeconomic status (SES), measured by maternal education and household income, influenced the risk of developing autoimmune disease (Type 1 Diabetes, Celiac disease, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis, and autoimmune thyroid disease), or age at diagnosis, and to analyse pathways between SES and autoimmune disease. We used data from the All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) study, a population-based prospective birth cohort, which included children born 1997-1999. Diagnoses of autoimmune disease was collected fr

Prenatal diagnosis and physical model reconstruction of agnathia-otocephaly with limb deformities (absent ulna, fibula and digits) following maternal exposure to oxymetazoline in the first trimester.

Agnathia-otocephaly or agnathia-sinotia-microstomy syndrome is the most severe malformation affecting the first branchial arch. It is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by absence of the lower jaw and abnormal ear positioning. Prenatal diagnosis is possible on conventional 2-D ultrasound in the second trimester. Three-dimensional ultrasound enhances detection of abnormal facial phenotype, especially in surface rendering mode. In addition, 3-D volume datasets are used to produce a physical model of the anomaly. We present a case of second trimester ultrasound diagnosis of agnathia-otocepha
