Fetal distress due to oligohydramnios can be treated with saline amnioinfusion. The technique is easily learned by physicians who know how to use intrauterine pressure catheters. Therapeutic and prophylactic indications for saline amnioinfusion include oligohydramnios, thick meconium-stained amniotic fluid, and fetal distress. Family physicians can use this new procedure to actively manage labor.

The delta F508 mutation and cystic fibrosis (CF) haplotypes with the markers KM19, pMP6d-9 and J3.11 are described in 54 adult British CF patients. delta F508 was found on 70% of all CF chromosomes, on none of the normal chromosomes and on only 37.5% of pancreatic sufficient CF chromosomes. All patients with meconium ileus were homozygous for the deletion.

Fifty-one neonates with functional intestinal obstruction are described. The commonest causes of functional obstruction were sticky meconium, sepsis, respiratory distress, and the prolonged infusion of fluid through a PVC catheter in the umbilical vein. Functional obstruction was diagnosed on routine investigation in 34 patients and in the remainder Hirschsprung's disease was the most commonly suspected cause of organic obstruction.

A case of listeriosis in a stillborn baby is described. The causative organism was isolated from lung, placenta, and meconium. The only manifestation of infection of the baby's mother was a slight pyrexia three days before delivery which subsided quickly after treatment with ampicillin. Examination of the mother 11 days after delivery failed to produce evidence of listerial infection.
