Glial lesion of the infratemporal fossa presenting as a soft tissue middle ear mass - rudimentary encephalocele or neural crest remnant?

We report about ectopic glial tissue of the skull base and the parapharyngeal space presenting as a soft tissue mass in the middle ear. An 1 … fratemporal approach. Histology revealed neuroglial tissue with calcifications without any signs of mesodermal or entodermal origin. On the basis of this case the pathogenesis and diagnosis of ectopic brain tissue and its relation to the more commonly encountered meningoencephalic herniations are reviewed. Furthermore therapeutical implications are discuss …

Tumors of the diaphragm.

Primary tumors of the diaphragm are rare, and more than half are benign. Diaphragmatic tumors arise from mesenchymal tissue because of their mesodermal origin, and all varieties of these tumors have been reported. An interesting paraphenomenon is hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, most commonly seen in tumors of neurogenic origin. In most instances, these tumors are small and can be excised with a primary repair anticipated. Secondary involvement of the diaphragm from lung cancer is more common, but is rarely associated with a resectable lesion. Direct extension from other intra-abdominal or intra…

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver in infants.

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver is a rare benign tumor of childhood which has been confused with various other benign liver lesions, particularly vascular hamartomas which are mesodermal but not mesenchymal. The mass, frequently cystic, is characterized by an admixture of epithelial structures in a loose connective tissue stroma with fluid accumulation suggestive of lymphangiomatous channels. Four patients are presented and reviewed with 25 previously reported cases. The patients, usually asymptomatic, present during the first two years of life with progressive abdominal distention, which m…

Anterior chamber cleavage syndrome. A stepladder classification.

This paper classifies the abnormalities of the anterior chamber cleavage syndrome (mesodermal dysgenesis of the iris and cornea). The anatomic findings are arranged in a tabular stepladder fashion which builds from simple to more complex combinations, most of which have been previously known by eponyms. There are three groups of anomalies: 1) peripheral, 2) central, and 3) combinations of the two. 1) The peripheral anomalies consist of a prominent Schwalbe's ring, iris strands to Schwalbe's ring, and hypoplasia of the anterior iris stroma. Developmental glaucoma is commonly present. 2) The ess…

The roles and controls of GATA factors in blood and cardiac development.

GATA factors play central roles in the programming of blood and cardiac cells during embryonic development. Using the experimentally accessible Xenopus and zebrafish models, we report observations regarding the roles of GATA-2 in the development of blood stem cells and GATA-4, -5, and -6 in cardiac development. We show that blood stem cells develop from the dorsal lateral plate mesoderm and GATA-2 is required at multiple stages. Firstly, GATA-2 is required to make the cells responsive to VEGF-A signalling by driving the synthesis of its receptor, FLK-1/KDR. This leads to differentiation into t…

Zinc transporter ZIP13 in mesenchymal tissues: From intracellular metal distribution to systemic homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Zinc is an essential trace element that plays pivotal roles in development, immunity, inflammation, and aging. Precise regulation of intracellular zinc distribution is mediated by zinc transporters of the ZIP (SLC39) and ZnT (SLC30) families, and their functions are increasingly recognized as tissue- and organelle-specific. Among these transporters, ZIP13 (SLC39A13) is a key regulator of mesenchymal biology. Genetic studies have demonstrated that loss of ZIP13 function causes connective tissue abnormalities, impaired bone and tooth development, and spondylodysplastic Ehlers-Danlos

The notochord: development, disease and stem cell-based modelling.

The notochord is a defining feature of chordates. It acts as mechanical support and a source of signals to surrounding tissues during develo … n during gastrulation through to disc formation, highlighting signalling pathways that govern axial mesoderm specification and notochordal lineage commitment. Knowledge gained from in vivo studies has guided the development of pluripotent stem cell-based models in mice and humans, including monolayer and micropatterned systems and 3D organoids. These model …

Muscles of Breathing: Development, Function, and Patterns of Activation.

This review is a comprehensive description of all muscles that assist lung inflation or deflation in any way. The developmental origin, anatomical orientation, mechanical action, innervation, and pattern of activation are described for each respiratory muscle fulfilling this broad definition. In addition, the circumstances in which each muscle is called upon to assist ventilation are discussed. The number of "respiratory" muscles is large, and the coordination of respiratory muscles with "nonrespiratory" muscles and in nonrespiratory activities is complex-commensurate with the diversity of act

Understanding kidney morphogenesis to guide renal tissue regeneration.

The treatment of renal failure has seen little change in the past 70 years. Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) are treated with renal replacement therapy, including dialysis or organ transplantation. The growing imbalance between the availability of donor organs and prevalence of ESRD is pushing an increasing number of patients to undergo dialysis. Although the prospect of new treatment options for patients through regenerative medicine has long been suggested, advances in the generation of human kidney cell types through the directed differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells o

Cellular and molecular events on the development of mammalian thyroid C cells.

Thyroid C cells synthesize and secrete calcitonin, a serum calcium-lowering hormone. This review provides our current understanding of mammalian thyroid C cells from the molecular and morphological perspectives. Several transcription factors and signaling molecules involved in the development of C cells have been identified, and genes expressed in the pharyngeal pouch endoderm, neural crest-derived mesenchyme in the pharyngeal arches, and ultimobranchial body play critical roles for the development of C cells. It has been generally accepted, without much-supporting evidence, that mammalian C c

Mandible and Tongue Development.

The tongue and mandible have common origins. They arise simultaneously from the mandibular arch and are coordinated in their development and growth, which is evident from several clinical conditions such as Pierre Robin sequence. Here, we review in detail the molecular networks controlling both mandible and tongue development. We also discuss their mechanical relationship and evolution as well as the potential for stem cell-based therapies for disorders affecting these organs.

A new Adamts9 conditional mouse allele identifies its non-redundant role in interdigital web regression.

ADAMTS9 is the most conserved member of a large family of secreted metalloproteases having diverse functions. Adamts9 null mice die before g … come of deletion of Adamts9 alone remained unknown. Here, Adamts9 was conditionally deleted in limb mesoderm using Prx1-Cre mice. Unlike other ADAMTS single knockouts, limb-specific Adamts9 deletion resulted in soft-tissue syndactyly (STS) with 100% penetrance and concurrent deletion of Adamts5 increased the severity of STS. Thus, Adamts9 has both non-redu …

Mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver in adults--case report.

INTRODUCTION: Mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver is a benign lesion presenting as an enlarging abdominal mass in children less than 2 years of age. Fewer than 5% cases are present in individuals over 5 years of age, and this lesion is extremely rare in adults. It may affect the left or the right lobe of liver as a cystic or solid mass or both components may be present. The pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, but these lesions have generally been considered to represent a development abnormality in the bile duct plate formation. CASE REPORT: In this report, we present a case of a 44-

Neo-regeneration of urinary bladder: a desired metaplasia of autologous membrane from rectosigmoid colon containing stem cells of intestinal crypts.

The current management of diseases of urinary bladder requiring resection is by augmentation cystoplasty or transplantation of ureters. Transplantation of ureters is associated with morbidity and mortality. Ideal management will be by regenerating urinary bladder in vivo. Neo-regeneration of tissues and organs like abdominal wall, aponeurosis etc., has been attempted and patented. After neo-regeneration of mesoderm tissues and organs, regeneration of urinary bladder (developed from endoderm) was. In vivo surgical techniques were developed in dogs. It is known that the embryonic morphogenesis o…

Pathology of uterine malignancies.

This overview covers epithelial, stromal and mesenchymal malignancies of the body of the uterus, excluding the cervix. The distinction of type I and type II endometrial adenocarcinoma with the morphological variants of this tumour is discussed and some molecular aspects are explored. The concept of carcinosarcoma representing a metaplastic adenocarcinoma of the endometrium that behaves more like a carcinoma than a sarcoma is explained. Some types of mixed epithelial and stromal neoplasm are described and contrasted with carcinosarcoma. The concept of stromal sarcoma and high-grade uterine sarc

Hepatic mesenchymal hamartoma in a preterm newborn: demonstration by low-dose multidetector CT.

Primary liver tumours are very rare in the neonatal period. Differential diagnoses include haemangioendothelioma, malignant hepatoblastoma and mesenchymal hamartoma. Due to non-specific clinical symptoms and indecisive imaging findings, correct diagnosis may be difficult to establish. We report a female preterm newborn who was delivered at 33 weeks of gestation and in whom ultrasonography (US) revealed a large cystic intraabdominal tumour of unknown origin. For further evaluation, contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (CT) was performed on the 4th day of life using a low-dose pro
