Predictors of aspiration pneumonia in nursing home residents.

Aspiration pneumonia is a serious problem for the elderly institutionalized person, often requiring transfer to a hospital and a lengthy stay there. It is associated with a high mortality rate and is very costly to the health care system. The current study sought to determine the key predictors of aspiration pneumonia in a nursing home population with the hope that health care providers could identify those residents at highest risk and focus more efforts on prevention of this serious disease. A cross-sectional, retrospective analysis was done, using the Minimum Data Set (MDS) nursing home ass

Attachment Between Nurses and Patients in Hospital Settings: Concept Analysis Using Walker and Avant's Method.

RATIONALE: Although attachment is a key concept in human relationships, nurse-patient attachment in clinical settings has not been clearly defined. AIM: To clarify the concept of nurse-patient attachment from the patient's perspective. METHOD: Walker and Avant's eight-step concept analysis framework was employed. A systematic search was conducted in databases including PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, and PsycINFO for peer-reviewed studies published from 2000 to March 2026. Inclusion criteria focused on nurse-patient interactions, attachment theory in clinical settings, and patient-reported e

Role of the School Nurse in Providing School Health Services: Policy Statement.

School nursing has evolved into an essential field bridging health care and education. School nurses play multifaceted roles, addressing direct care, care coordination, public health, leadership, and quality improvement. They manage communicable diseases, chronic conditions, mental health, and emergencies while promoting safe, equitable learning environments. Collaboration with pediatricians enhances outcomes for students, families, and communities by addressing shared challenges like the rising prevalence of children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), mental health concerns, a

A cost-minimisation analysis comparing alternative telemedicine screening approaches for retinopathy of prematurity.

INTRODUCTION: Screening for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an important procedure in the prevention of blindness in high-risk preterm infants. In the regionalised healthcare system of Queensland (Australia), outside of the major centres, some preterm infants are cared for in special care nurseries (SCNs). When necessary, infants in these nurseries who are at risk of ROP are transferred to a tertiary hospital for screening by paediatric ophthalmologists. The transport of preterm infants for eye examinations adds risk and incurs significant costs to the health system. Using a cost-minimisat

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

Peer education project with persons who have experienced homelessness.

This paper describes an unconventional health education project implemented by nurse practitioners in a nurse-managed clinic serving persons who are homeless. The nurse practitioners perceived that there were a number of potential barriers to providing health education to the homeless patients. These barriers included the fact that this patient population is part of a marginalized subculture affected by a variety of overwhelming social problems. An additional barrier was that the nurses often differed from their homeless patients in terms of race, gender, socioeconomic status, formal education

Innovative behavior among clinical nurses: empirical level stratification and associated factors in a cross-sectional study in Zhejiang Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Innovation in nursing practice is closely related to quality of care, yet nurses working in high-demand clinical environments may show relatively low levels of innovative behavior. Previous studies have primarily described nurses' innovative behavior using total scores, with less attention to individual heterogeneity. This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify empirically derived levels of innovative behavior among clinical nurses and to examine their statistical associations with organizational justice, job embeddedness, and other resource-related factors. METHODS:

Reaching consensus: the process of recommending treatment decisions for Alzheimer's patients.

Observational and interview data obtained from nurse caregivers and family members of patients with late-stage Alzheimer's disease were analyzed to explicate the nursing role in advance proxy planning. A four-phase model, Achieving Consensus: Decision Making to Determine Treatment Options for Patients with Alzheimer's Disease, was developed. Patient decline, family coping, professional development of nursing staff, and nursing unit philosophy were community characteristics found to be important antecedents to the process of reaching consensus. Achieving consensus constructs included interactiv

The Mobile Hospital delivers outreach acute care to nursing homes: healthcare staff interviews.

BACKGROUND: Nursing home residents often face unnecessary risks when visiting the emergency department (ED). Due to the limited rapid response capabilities of primary care and lack of equipment for acute illnesses, onsite specialized outreach units present a novel alternative. The Mobile Hospital is a nurse-led outreach unit providing onsite acute care to nursing home residents with remote physician support. The unit operates in the suburban area of Espoo, Finland. This study aimed to evaluate the Mobile Hospital from the perspective of healthcare staff. METHODS: We interviewed nursing home n

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Registered Nurse Employment Across Settings.

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic, which had a particular impact on inpatient and long-term care (LTC) nurses, had an effect on nurses' choice of employment settings. OBJECTIVE: Determine whether the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to changes in nurses' choice of employment setting. METHODS: This study used data from the 2018 and 2022 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses to conduct a difference-in-difference analysis. We constructed a state-level measure of COVID-19 caseload, defined as COVID-19 cases per hospital bed; High versus Low COVID-19 states

Advanced practice nursing, critical care, and Spain: A point of view.

Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) continues to gain recognition. Despite the guidelines published by the International Council of Nurses in 2020, there is still some confusion about this concept. In general, APN is used in three different and not necessarily compatible ways: as an umbrella term that regulates four different roles, as a level of practice, or as a role itself. Specialization in nursing does not always imply advanced practice, although both concepts are not mutually exclusive. The "Acute Care Nurse Practitioners" in the United States can conduct physical examinations and medical hi
