Adaptive and Maladaptive Networks Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

BACKGROUND: A person's ability to adapt to a given context is a critical determinant of mental health and psychopathology, which has been redefined by network approaches and Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). This study examined whether including adaptive processes in EMA enhances the informational value of idiographic network models. METHOD: Forty-five university students participated in a multi-week EMA protocol assessing psychological dimensions using bipolar visual analogue scales ranging from maladaptive to adaptive. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one assessed onl

Momentary assessment research in psychosis.

There is an expanding interest to study psychosis in the realm of daily life. The study of the person in the context of daily life may provide a powerful addition to more conventional and cross-sectional research strategies in the study of psychosis. This article first discusses the nature of experience sampling research in psychosis and demonstrates the feasibility and validity of studies using the experience sampling method (ESM) in this patient group. Second, the article presents a review of all ESM research in psychosis with a special focus on (a) the phenomenology, (b) the etiology, and (

Staff strategies and explanations for intervening with challenging behaviours.

Behavioural models identify the actions of others as an important factor in the development and maintenance of challenging behaviours. In the present study, 109 care staff were asked about their immediate and longer-term intervention strategies for a fictitious young man's challenging behaviour. Staff descriptions of long-term interventions were largely consistent with the aims of psychological interventions. However, their immediate intervention strategies were similar to the counter-habilitative strategies identified in previous observational and self-report research. The implications of the

What General and Pain-associated Psychological Distress Phenotypes Exist Among Patients with Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis?

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress can negatively influence disability, quality of life, and treatment outcomes for individuals with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). Clinical practice guidelines recommend a comprehensive disease management approach to OA that includes the identification, evaluation, and management of psychological distress. However, uncertainty around the best psychological screening and assessment methods, a poor understanding of the heterogeneity of psychological distress in those with OA, and lack of guidance on how to scale treatment have limited the growth of OA care mod

Dare to take care of yourself: the relationship between psychological courage and the intention to undergo mammography screening.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the role of psychological courage (PC)-understood as the willingness to act despite fear or anxiety-in predicting women's intentions to undergo mammography screening. While PC has been linked to adaptive behavior in challenging contexts, its relevance in preventive healthcare remains largely unexplored. METHODS: A sample of 292 women aged 45-74 with no history of breast cancer completed measures assessing PC, anxiety, cancer worry, perceived risk, and past screening behavior. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine whether PC predicted s

Social Inequalities in Adolescents' Psychological and Somatic Complaints: Cross-National Trends Between 2002 and 2022 and the Role of Societal Changes.

OBJECTIVES: Cross-national differences in long-term trends in social inequalities in adolescents' mental health remain poorly understood, as does the impact of societal changes. We tested (1) whether the association between family socioeconomic status and psychological and somatic complaints changed between 2002 and 2022, (2) the extent to which these trends varied across countries, and (3) whether changes in income inequality, schoolwork pressure, and internet activity within countries were related to these trends. METHODS: Using data from 903,344 adolescents across 32 countries from the Hea

Mental Health of Young People in the Post-Pandemic Era: Perspective Based on Positive Psychology and Resilience.

With the gradual decline in COVID-19 cases, there is a need to re-visit the mental health of adolescents and emerging adults in the post-pandemic period. Several observations can be highlighted from the scientific literature. First, while some studies suggest that mental health of young people has worsened in the post-pandemic period, there are inconsistent and conflicting findings. Second, there are more studies on psychological morbidity than on positive psychological attributes. Third, compared with the West, there are relatively fewer Chinese studies. Fourth, compared with adolescents, the

The Relationships Between Healthcare Access, Gender, and Psychedelics and Their Effects on Distress.

Background: Structural inequalities in healthcare access may influence how individuals experience the psychological effects of psychedelic substances, potentially limiting positive outcomes among vulnerable populations. Objectives: This study uses data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2008-2019; N = 484,732) to examine how public and private health insurance moderate the association between psychedelic use and psychological distress. Methods: Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models indicate that private health insurance is associated with lower psychological distress, wh

EEG trajectories across the first two years of life are associated with maternal depression, anxiety, and perceived stress.

Maternal psychological distress (e.g., symptoms of anxiety and depression; perceived stress levels) may influence early neurodevelopmental trajectories of offspring, yet research in community samples with high stress exposures is relatively limited. The current study sought to examine longitudinal trajectories of high-frequency EEG oscillations (β & γ bands) in infants at 2, 6, 9, 12, and 24 months and associations with maternal psychological distress. Using a longitudinal prospective cohort design, 211 families were followed during the first two years of life. Multilevel Mixed Effects models

Predicting Risk Factors for Intimate Partner Violence Among Post-9/11 College Student Veterans.

The current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq present unique risk factors for military personnel that increase the likelihood of psychological distress and concomitant consequences related to trauma. Several studies have found that the stress brought about by financial difficulties, unemployment, and the need to renegotiate roles and responsibilities with spouses following discharge increases the likelihood of relationship strain and even intimate partner violence in the veteran population. This study was undertaken to determine the challenges related to maintaining healthy relationships for c

A qualitative study of the psychosocial and health consequences associated with lymphedema among women in the Dominican Republic.

To date, few studies have addressed the sequelae of lymphatic filariasis, a mosquito-transmitted disease, on the quality of life of affected women in the Americas. In this qualitative study, we conducted 28 semi-structured interviews and 3 focus groups of women with lymphedema or elephantiasis of the leg living in filariasis-endemic areas of the Dominican Republic. Women in our study described a spectrum of consequences associated with their lymphedema but physical, functional, and psychological limitations were not always associated with severity of lymphedema. Data suggests that management f

Associations Between Life Satisfaction and Sleep Quality Among Older Adults in China: Mediating Roles of Psychological Resilience and Anxiety and a Moderating Role of Chronic Disease.

Background: Poor sleep quality is common in older adults and closely tied to emotional well-being. While life satisfaction has been linked to sleep outcomes, the psychological pathways remain underexplored. Purpose: This study examines whether psychological resilience and anxiety symptoms mediate the relationship between life satisfaction and sleep quality among older adults, and whether chronic disease moderates these pathways. Methods: Data were drawn from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, including 3089 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older. Sle
