In studies conducted on polio survivors with late effects of poliomyelitis, new fatigue is frequently reported. The main purpose of the present study was to examine the characteristics of polio survivors reporting severe fatigue versus those reporting mild or no fatigue. From a survey among 276 representative Norwegian polio survivors, we recruited all patients with mild/no fatigue and those with severe fatigue, without other diseases than poliomyelitis. Out of 276 polio survivors, 43 reported mild, 113 moderate and 118 severe fatigue (2 were missing). Only 12 with mild fatigue, 21 with modera

The effect of acute hypoxia and hypercapnia on skeletal muscle relaxation rate was investigated in man. The contractile force of limb muscles (quadriceps femoris and adductor pollicis) was studied in normal subjects using electrical stimulation. The twitch transdiaphragmatic pressure was used to investigate the diaphragm. The maximum relaxation rate was measured from contractions of the non-fatigued quadriceps femoris, adductor pollicis and diaphragm. Severe hypoxia (mean transcutaneous oxygen tension 40 mmHg) did not alter the maximum relaxation rate from 20 Hz stimulated contractions of the

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is commonly used in skeletal muscles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) with th … h SCI. However, this type of protocol has not been clinically adopted because it may generate rapid muscle fatigue and thus prevent the performance of repeated high-intensity muscular contractions in paralysed muscles. Moreover, superimposing patellar tendon vibration onto the wide-pulse width NMES has been shown to elicit further increases in impulse or, at lea …

INTRODUCTION: The central nervous system can play a critical role in limiting exercise performance during hypoxic conditions. Hypocapnia, which is associated with hypoxia-induced hyperventilation, may affect cerebral perfusion. We hypothesized that CO2 clamping during hypoxic isometric knee extensions would improve cerebral oxygenation and reduce central fatigue.
METHODS: Fifteen healthy men (mean ± SD: age, 25 ± 8 yr; body mass, 72 ± 11 kg; height, 179 ± 7 cm) performed intermittent isometric knee extensions at ∼50% of maximal voluntary contraction to task failure in normoxia, hypoxia with C

Activity-induced muscle pain increases interleukin-1β (IL-1β) release from muscle macrophages and the development of hyperalgesia is prevented by blockade of IL-1β in muscle. Brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is released from sensory neurons in response to IL-1β and mediates both inflammatory and neuropathic pain. Thus, we hypothesize that in activity-induced pain, fatigue metabolites combined with IL-1β activate sensory neurons to increase BDNF release, peripherally in muscle and centrally in the spinal dorsal horn, to produce hyperalgesia. We tested the effect of intrathecal or intram

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries in youth pitchers continue to be concerning despite the institution of pitch count limits. Flexor-pronator mass fatigue can lead to diminished dynamic stability, resulting in greater stress on the UCL.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate fatigue of the flexor-pronator mass by assessing changes in medial elbow laxity; noninvasively characterizing alterations in muscle glycogen; and identifying changes in subjective fatigue, strength, range of motion (ROM), pitching velocity, and accuracy with increasing pitches thrown by youth pitchers to their

Patients have frequently described fatigue in association with chronic diseases, including cancer and a host of neurologic, metabolic, and psychiatric diseases. Fatigue can be influenced by factors such as the activity of the disease, medication, age, sex, and duration of symptoms. It presents a multidimensional influence with expression on physical, emotional, cognitive, and even social aspects of life. Fatigue also coexists and often interacts with other factors, including disturbance of mood, anemia, infections, fever, pain, sleep, and stress, making its evaluation complex. Psoriasis is a s

McArdle's Disease is a rare glycogen disease involving deficiency in muscle phosphorylase. This deficiency can lead to rhabdomyolysis and subsequently renal failure. McArdle's Disease has a similar presentation as several other metabolic myopathies with exercise-induced fatigue, myalgias, weakness or unexplained rhabdomyolysis. Suspicion should be raised in the presence of unexplained symptoms, and muscle biopsy can be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Myophosphorylase deficiency or McArdle's disease is rarely recognized in childhood. The onset is generally in adolescence or in adult age with exercise intolerance, muscle cramps and myoglobinuria. Two siblings of 6 and 2 years of age are described. The first patient showed early fatigue and both had elevated CK levels. Morphological and biochemical studies of muscle biopsies revealed a defect of myophosphorylase.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or post-viral fatigue syndrome is a common disorder, which has been known previously under a variety of different names, i.e., Iceland disease or Royal Free disease. It may occur in epidemics or sporadically. The cause is unknown, with patients complaining of exhaustion, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, and invariable psychiatric symptoms such as emotional lability, poor memory/concentration, and depression. Present-day research points to the cause as a metabolic disorder secondary to persistent viral infection.

The aim of the study was to address the genioglossus muscle physiological and histological changes after unilateral nasal obstruction in growing rats. Fifty-four 6-day-old male Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into control (n = 27) and experimental (n = 27) groups. Unilateral nasal obstruction was performed at 8 days old. Contractile properties of the genioglossus whole muscle were measured at 5-, 7- and 9-week-old, including the twitch and tetanic forces, contraction time, half-decay time, and fatigue index. The histological characteristics of the genioglossus were also evaluated at 5

The aim of the present study was to compare the time-course of indirect symptoms of exercise-induced muscle damage after 50 and 100 drop jumps. A high-force, low intensity exercise protocol was used to avoid discrepancies regarding metabolic fatigue immediately after exercise. Healthy untrained men performed 50 ("50 group", n = 13) or 100 ("100 group", n = 13) intermittent (30-s interval between each jump) drop jumps, respectively, from the height of 0.5 m with a counter-movement to a 90° knee flexion angle and immediate maximal rebound. Voluntary and electrically evoked knee extensor strength

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Swimmer's shoulder is the term used to describe the problem of shoulder pain in swimmers. Originally described as supraspinatus tendon impingement under the coracoacromial arch, it is now understood that several different pathologies can cause shoulder pain in competitive swimmers, including subacromial impingement syndrome, overuse and subsequent muscle fatigue, scapular dyskinesis, and laxity and instability.
RECENT FINDINGS: Swimmers may develop increased shoulder laxity over time due to repetitive use. Such excessive laxity can decrease passive shoulder stability and le…

Intensive computer use has been associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Although the underlying mechanisms are still not fully understood, muscle fatigue is thought to be a contributing factor. Previous studies have shown that keystroke durations are related to muscle twitch durations and may be used as a surrogate measure of muscle fatigue. Software tools have been developed to measure keystroke durations; however, the accuracy of these programs may be influenced by the computer and/or the operating system (OS). Keystrokes were collected from six subjects and analyzed to determine w…

The neural substrates of fatigue induced by muscular activity have been addressed in depth in relation to isometric tasks. For these activities, when fatigue develops, it has been noted that the duration of the silent periods (SPs) increases in response to both transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of primary motor cortex or electric cervicomedullary stimulation (CMS). However, fatigue is known to be task-dependent and the mechanisms giving rise to a decrease in motor performance during brief, fast repetitive tasks have been less studied. We hypothesized that fatigue induced by repetitive fa
