OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between DMD and pain.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review in Medline/PubMed and BVS (virtual library in health) databases. We searched for articles that showed the terms "Muscular Dystrophy, Duchenne" and "Pain" in all fields. All studies included boys diagnosed with DMD and the occurrence/amount of pain on this population.
RESULTS: Initially, there were 175 studies. 167 articles were excluded for not meeting the inclusion criteria. The remaining eight eligible studies, involving pain assessment in DMD, were analyzed.

The aim of this study is to determine the diagnostic value of pressure algometry in temporomandibular disorders. Two hundred volunteers aged 19.3 to 27.8 (mean 21.50, SD 0.97) participated in this study. Two patients with exercise-induced myalgias and rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria were evaluated with muscle biopsy and comprehensive myopathy next generation sequencing (NGS) gene panels. Genetic analysis revealed homozygosity for two known pathogenic SGCA mutations (R284C in Patient 1 and V247M in Patient 2). Muscle biopsy showed minimal changes with normal immunohistochemistry for α-sarcoglycan. Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging febrile illness. While many kinds of severe complications including acute renal failure have been reported, rhabdomyolysis is rarely reported in association with SFTS. A 54-year-old female farmer was admitted with fever and diffuse myalgia. Laboratory finding showed thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, azotemia, extremely elevated muscle enzyme levels and myoglobinuria. We describe a fatal case of rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure complicated by SFTS.

A 24-year-old man with no significant medical history was admitted to this hospital because of an acute exanthema, myalgia and malaise. A fourth-generation screening test for HIV was reactive but the following confirmation test was not. Although the patient did not belong to a high risk group, we decided to perform a HIV-RNA-PCR. The result showed a high virus load so that we finally diagnosed a primary HIV infection.

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) Infection, has caused recurrent outbreaks worldwide. It is associated with severe morbidity and mortality, and is not treatable with the currently available antiviral therapies. We present a case of a 43 year-old male healthcare provider, who admitted with productive cough, dyspnea, myalgia, pleuritic chest pain and fever. Computed tomography (CT) showed bilateral ground glass opacities and consolidation. Sputum polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for MERS-coronavirus was positive.

A male patient with limb weakness, myalgia and edema was subsequently found to have an immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) on biopsy. Targeted myopathic antibody analysis revealed antibodies to signal recognition particle (SRP). Anti-SRP-associated necrotizing myopathy was diagnosed. This case was complicated by the concurrent development of class III lupus nephritis. We discuss an interesting case progression and development as well as the management of these difficult to treat conditions.

This case report presents two British medical students who contracted ciguatera poisoning while on elective in the Cook Islands. Thirty-six hours after consuming two reef fish they developed paraesthesia of the mouth, hands and feet, myalgia, pruritis and cold allodynia. Neurological examination was normal. Diagnosis of ciguatera poisoning was made on history of reef fish consumption and classical clinical presentation. Management was symptomatic (antihistamines) and both students made a full recovery within 10 weeks.

Metabolic and mitochondrial myopathies encompass a heterogeneous group of disorders that result in impaired energy production in skeletal muscle. Symptoms of premature muscle fatigue, sometimes leading to myalgia, rhabdomyolysis, and myoglobinuria, typically occur with exercise that would normally depend on the defective metabolic pathway. But in another group of these disorders, the dominant muscle symptom is weakness. This article reviews the clinical features, diagnosis, and management of these diseases with emphasis on the recent literature.

Dengue is characterized by biphasic fever, myalgia or arthralgia, rash, leukopenia, and lymphadenopathy. It is self-limiting, and dengue-associated haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis has been reported in fewer than 20 children worldwide. We report the case of a 4-y-old boy with dengue who continued to have fever for 30 days, with hepatomegaly, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. Bone marrow examination showed haemophagocytes. The child was treated with steroids, instead etoposide and oral cyclosporine.

A Thai 37-years-old man presented with adult onset progressive proximal muscle weakness and generalized myalgia. Family history showed similar symptoms in several male relatives, compatible with X-linked recessive inheritance. Electromyography suggested myopathic process. Serum creatine kinase was highly elevated. Diagnosis of Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) was confirmed by genetic testing. His symptoms responded well to steroid treatment. This report is of the first Thai patient with atypical presentation of BMD.

We present a case of adult Pompe disease (acid maltase deficiency) with an uncommon clinical presentation characterized by severe fatigue and myalgia prior to the onset of limb girdle weakness. Remarkably, the muscle biopsy demonstrated selective involvement of type 1 muscle fibers. The cause and clinical effects of fiber type specific involvement are currently unknown, but the phenomenon might contribute to the clinical heterogeneity in Pompe disease and the variable response to enzyme replacement therapy.

We developed a patient-based survey to evaluate the impact of a respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette implementation strategy on infection control practices in the emergency department. The frequency of self-reported mask use by coughing patients was low (27%) and often inconsistent. The frequency of use was highest among patients who presented with myalgia (odds ratio, 14.7; P = .02) and among patients who visited the emergency department during January (odds ratio, 4.1; P = .04).

The authors describe a 47-year-old man who presented with proximal muscle weakness, myalgia, elevated creatine kinase, and features of a pure myopathic syndrome in whom they have identified a novel mutation in the mitochondrial tRNA(Ala) gene. This 5591G>A transition is heteroplasmic, segregates with cytochrome c oxidase deficiency in single muscle fibers, and fulfills recognized criteria for pathogenicity. This case exemplifies the wide-ranging clinical spectrum of mitochondrial disease presentations.
