Undifferentiated small round cell sarcomas in the retroperitoneal space in a 12-year-old female: a rare case report.

Undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma (USRCS) is an extremely rare and highly aggressive group of malignant neoplasms affecting bones and soft tissues. USRCSs, particularly extraosseous variants pose significant diagnostic challenges due to their rarity, similar clinicoradiological features, nonspecific morphology and the necessity for comprehensive molecular analyses. This paper discusses a rare interesting case of retroperitoneal USRCS in a 12-year-old female with a five-day history of diarrhea and slight right lower abdominal pain. Hematological profile, renal function test, liver funct

Multiparametric whole-body MRI of patients with neurofibromatosis type I: spectrum of imaging findings.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) type I is a neuroectodermal and mesodermal dysplasia caused by a mutation of the neurofibromin tumor suppressor gene. Phenotypic features of NF1 vary, and patients develop benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors and malignant neoplasms, such as malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, malignant melanoma, and astrocytoma. Multiparametric whole-body MR imaging (WBMRI) plays a critical role in disease surveillance. Multiparametric MRI, typically used in prostate imaging, is a general term for a technique that includes multiple sequences, i.e. anatomic, diffusion, and Dixon-ba

Fibrous Dysplasia Masquerading as Sternal Malignancy: A Rare and Challenging Presentation.

This case report presents a rare and challenging manifestation of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia (FD), a skeletal developmental anomaly characterized by the proliferation of fibrous connective tissue intermingled with irregular bony trabeculae. While monostotic FD is more common, polyostotic FD can occur in the context of McCune-Albright syndrome, a multisystem developmental disorder. Our patient, a 55-year-old female with a history of diabetes, hypothyroidism, and dyslipidemia, presented with progressively worsening dysphagia, sternal pain, and swelling over three years. Clinical examination r

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the uterine cervix arising in an asymptomatic 46-year-old female.

An extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare type of plasma cell tumour that can be found in soft tissues throughout the body. The most common location for an extramedullary plasmacytoma is in the head and neck region. Few case reports have previously documented patients with an extramedullary plasmacytoma within the female genital tract. We report a case of a healthy and asymptomatic 46-year-old female who presented to Colposcopy Clinic with a finding of low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion seen on a routine Pap smear. She was found to have a cervical polyp that was excised. Pathology reveal

Intraosseous meningioma mimicking osteosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Predominantly intraosseous meningiomas are rare entities that include true primary intraosseous meningiomas (PIM), as well as meningiomas that may show extensive bone involvement, such as en plaque meningiomas. Different hypotheses have been proposed to decipher the origin of PIMs, such as ectopic arachnoid cap cell entrapment during birth or after trauma. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice of such lesions. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 65-year-old man with an enlarging mass in the parieto-occipital region that grew slowly and progressively over 13 years, fo

Neck stiffness in a post-irradiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma adult: An unusual diagnosis.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is a neoplasm commonly found in population of South East Asia. The mainstay of treatment is high dose irradiation. Complications from radiotherapy are not uncommon especially to those nearby structures such as vertebrae and spinal cord. A 57 year-old gentleman with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) who was treated with chemo-radiation (total of 35 fractions,70Gy) presented to us 6 months post therapy with bilateral nasal discharge and progressive neck stiffness. Nasoendoscopy showed inflamed nasophayngeal mucosa and Computed Tomography (CT) brain and cervical spine showed

A case of squamous cell carcinoma presenting as localized severe periodontitis in the maxillary gingiva.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common malignant neoplasm of the oral cavity. The clinical features of gingival SCC include alveolar bone loss and erythematous lesion. Therefore, gingival SCC sometimes presents as advanced periodontitis. This case report describes a patient diagnosed with gingival SCC after the extraction of molars presenting as being affected by localized severe periodontitis. METHODS: The patient was a 61-year-old man whose chief complaint was pain in the left maxillary area. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed common findings of a periodon

Nonepithelial tumors of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. A clinicopathologic study. XIII: Meningiomas.

Twelve cases of meningiomas involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are reported. Meningiomas only rarely involve the upper respiratory tract; these 12 cases were found among the 566,000 surgical pathology cases that have been studied in this laboratory. In this series, five meningiomas probably arose in the cranial cavity and secondarily extended into the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Because radiographs demonstrated hyperostosis or bone destruction, three other tumors could have involved the cranial cavity, but this was never proven. In two other cases, the meningiomas appeare

Nude rat model for studying metastasis of human tumor cells to bone and bone marrow.

Bone metastases reproducibly developed in nude rats after an injection of LOX human malignant melanoma cells into the left ventricle, with hind leg paralyses appearing in all animals within approximately 2 weeks. Manifest metastases were present exclusively in the skeletal system, predominantly in the lumbar portion of the spine, the long bones, and occasionally in the skull. Intracardially injected 125I-labeled tumor cells and monodisperse microspheres were distributed in parallel to the various tissues. Moreover, because the levels of radioactivity were significantly lower in bone than in lu

CCN2/CTGF expression does not correlate with fibrosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms, consistent with noncanonical TGF-β signaling driving myelofibrosis.

The classical BCR::ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) form a group of bone marrow (BM) diseases with the potential to progress to acute myeloid leukemia or develop marrow fibrosis and subsequent BM failure. The mechanism by which BM fibrosis develops and the factors that drive stromal activation and fibrosis are not well understood. Cellular Communication Network 2 (CCN2), also known as CTGF (Connective Tissue Growth Factor), is a profibrotic matricellular protein functioning as an important driver and biomarker of fibrosis in a wide range of diseases outside the marrow. CCN2 can

Risk of subsequent primary oral cancer in a cohort of 69,460 5-year survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer in Europe: the PanCareSurFup study.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of childhood cancer are at risk of subsequent primary malignant neoplasms (SPNs), but the risk for rarer types of SPNs, such as oral cancer, is uncertain. Previous studies included few oral SPNs, hence large-scale cohorts are required to identify groups at risks. METHODS: The PanCareSurFup cohort includes 69,460 5-year survivors of childhood cancer across Europe. Risks of oral SPNs were defined by standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), absolute excess risks and cumulative incidence. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five oral SPNs (64 salivary gland, 38 tongue, 20 pharynx,

Increased complexity of t(11;14) rearrangements in plasma cell neoplasms compared with mantle cell lymphoma.

Plasma cell neoplasms (PCN) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) can both harbor t(11;14)(q13;q32) (CCND1/IGH), usually resulting in cyclin D1 overexpression. In some cases, particularly at low levels of disease, it can be morphologically challenging to distinguish between these entities in the bone marrow (BM) since PCN with t(11;14) are often CD20-positive with lymphoplasmacytic cytology, while MCL can rarely have plasmacytic differentiation. We compared the difference in CCND1/IGH by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in PCN and MCL to evaluate for possible differentiating characteristics.

JAK-2 V617F mutation increases heparanase procoagulant activity.

Patients with polycythaemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythaemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF) are at increased risk of arterial and venous thrombosis. In patients with ET a positive correlation was observed between JAK-2 V617F mutation, that facilitates erythropoietin receptor signalling, and thrombotic events, although the mechanism involved is not clear. We previously demonstrated that heparanase protein forms a complex and enhances the activity of the blood coagulation initiator tissue factor (TF) which leads to increased factor Xa production and subsequent activation of the coagul

A parallel comparison of T-cell clonality assessment between an in-house PCR assay and the BIOMED-2 assay leading to an efficient and cost-effective strategy.

AIMS: Diagnosis of T-cell lymphoproliferation is sometimes challenging, and in certain instances pathologists rely heavily on the clonality assessment results of T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement (TCR-GR). Many investigators have designed various in-house primer sets for PCR-based study targeting different loci of TCR genes. In recent years, the commercial BIOMED-2 protocols have become available. The in-house primers are very cheap while the BIOMED-2 primers are expensive. This parallel study aimed to compare the sensitivity of the in-house TCRG primers (two reactions) and the BIOMED-2

Patient-Specific Biases in Fat Fraction Estimates of Malignant Bone Marrow due to Relaxation Times Measured With STEAM at 3T.

Semiquantitative fat fraction estimation using 2-point Dixon sequences is widely used in whole-body (WB) MR imaging for malignant bone disease but is biased by relaxation times. Understanding this bias requires water- and fat-specific relaxometry data in normal-appearing marrow and lesions. This study measured bone marrow relaxation times in healthy volunteers and WB-MRI patients using MRS at 3T. Five healthy female volunteers (mean age 38.0 ± 2.5 years) and 24 patients with malignant bone disease undergoing clinical WB-MRI (13 male; mean age 67.7 ± 9.7 years; primary cancers: breast = 5, mela

Patient specific implants for jawbone reconstruction after tumor resection.

In case of benign and malignant tumours affecting the maxillofacial region, the resection of jawbone reflects the standard therapy in more than 5.000 cases per year within the European Union. The resulting large bone defects lead to scarred, mangled facial appearance, loss of mastication and probably speech, requiring aesthetic and functional surgery as a basis for physical and physiological rehabilitation. Although autologous vascularized bone autografts reflect the current golden standard, the portion of bone available for the procedure is limited and subsequent high-dose anti-cancer chemo-/

Vascularized fibula transfer for lower limb reconstruction.

Massive bony defects of the lower extremity are usually the result of high-energy trauma, tumor resection, or severe sepsis. Vascularized fibular grafts are useful in the reconstruction of large skeletal defects, especially in cases of scarred and avascular recipient sites, or in patients with combined bone and soft-tissue defects. Microvascular free fibula transfer is considered the most suitable autograft for reconstruction of the middle tibia because of its long cylindrical straight shape, mechanical strength, predictable vascular pedicle, and hypertrophy potential. The ability to fold the
