[Human intestinal parasites in Subsaharan Africa. II. Sao Tomé and Principe].

In 1983 the authors carried out a survey in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Principe, analysing 1050 specimens of stools collected a … 562 females. The survey was preceded by a sensitization of the people to the problem of intestinal parasites and by two preliminary surveys about the number of existing latrines and about people's believes and attitudes in relation to helmintiasis. The tests were made according to the modified Ritchie technique on fecal specimens preserved with 10% formol …

Intestinal parasites and bacteria in Aboriginal children in South West Australia.

In a study of intestinal parasites in 697 Aboriginal children under the age of 6 years in South-west Australia, Giardia lamblia was recorded in 26% and Hymenolepis nana in 13.9%. G. lamblia infections occurred above 4 months of age, and H. nana infections above 18 months of age. There was a close correlation between infection with these two species (chi 2, P less than 0.001). Campylobacter jejuni, the predominant bacterial species recorded, was isolated in 2.3%, and was related to bowel symptoms in one child. G. lamblia was more prevalent in the country areas than in the Perth metropolitan are…

Severe acute pancreatitis caused by parasites in the common bile duct.

Nine cases of acute pancreatitis due to parasites in the common bile duct (Ascaris lumbricoides 4, Clonorchis sinensis 5) are reported. Eight cases were discovered at laparotomy and one at postmortem. The indications for operation were worsening pancreatitis, sepsis or cholangitis. Decompression of the biliary system and removal of parasites resulted in the recovery of the eight cases operated upon. In endemic areas, all patients with acute pancreatitis should be screened for parasites. Antibiotics and/or antihelminthics should be given if they are found. Surgery is necessary for those with wo…

Intestinal parasites of man in Bukidnon, Philippines, with emphasis on schistosomiasis.

A total of 831 fecal specimens from Malay-balay, Mindanao, Philippines were examined for schistosomiasis and common intestinal parasites. Schistosoma japonicum eggs were found in 16% of the samples. Infections were more common in males (20%) than in females (12%). Age-wise, infections were infrequently diagnosed in children less than 10 years and infections in older age groups varied from 12-27%. Hookworm, chiefly Necator americanus, was the most common parasite found (44%) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides (32%) Trichuris trichiura was found in only 12%. Enterobius vermicularis and eggs of Tae…

Intestinal and blood parasites of man on Alor Island Southeast Indonesia.

A survey of blood and intestinal parasites in a coastal and a mountainous area of the remote island of Alor, southeastern Indonesia revealed widespread infection with pathogenic intestinal protozoa and helminths, malaria and filaria. Amoebiasis (31.2%), ascariasis (35.3%) and hookworm infections (28.6%) were common, reflecting primitive sanitation and hygiene. Trichuriasis rates (6.8%) were less than expected perhaps due to the prolonged dry season and soil factors in the area. Timor filariasis was found in coastal villagers (10.5%), but not in persons living at an elevation of 500 meters; a l…

Intestinal and blood parasites in the Torro Valley, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Approximately 300 blood and fecal specimens were examined in a parasitologic survey of indigenous inhabitants of the small isolated Torro Valley in the mountains of Central Sulawesi. Schistosoma japonicum was not found although the parasite is endemic in the neighboring Lindu and Napu valleys. Hookworm infection (71%) was the most common helminthiasis. The prevalences of ascariasis (3%) and trichuriasis (2%) are low for Indonesia in general but similar to those found in nearby mountainous areas of Sulawesi. Intestinal protozoa endemic to the area are: Entamoeba histolytica (8%). E. coli (23%).

Transport of amino acids and nucleic acid precursors in malarial parasites.

In vitro studies have shown that exogenously supplied amino acids are transferred into the malaria-infected cell, where they are incorporate … e, and uridine do not readily enter the red cell, and incorporation does not take place because the parasites lack the appropriate enzyme for conversion to nucleotides. Erythrocyte-"free" P. berghei and P. lophurae take up purines and orotic acid. It has been suggested that in vivo the preferred purines are hypoxanthine and inosine, and that the transport l …
