Peer relationships, social skills, self-esteem, parental psychopathology, and family functioning of children with Tourette's disorder and a chronic disease control group of children with diabetes mellitus were compared. Children with Tourette's disorder had poorer peer relationships than their classmates and were more likely to have extreme scores reflecting increased risk for peer relationship problems than children with diabetes mellitus, but did not report self-esteem problems or social skills deficits. Measures of peer relationships were not related to severity or duration of tics. Childre

We examined the developmental processes involved in peer problems among children (M age = 10.41 years) previously diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at study entry (N = 536) and a comparison group (N = 284). Participants were followed over a 6-year period ranging from middle childhood to adolescence. At four assessment periods, measures of aggression, social skills, positive illusory biases (in the social and behavioral domains), and peer rejection were assessed. Results indicated that children from the ADHD group exhibited difficulties in each of these areas at the

OBJECTIVE: Professional structures to assist peer support workers (PSWs) are lacking, which could negatively affect PSW retention and job progression. The aim of this study was to assess PSWs' professional development needs.
METHODS: Using reflexive thematic analysis, the authors conducted a qualitative interview study in Canada and completed semistructured interviews with 17 PSWs via videoconferencing software.
RESULTS: Participants identified the need for career progression opportunities that did not require changing job titles. In particular, they highlighted the need for continuing educa

BACKGROUND: People affected by skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are often stigmatised, experiencing discrimination in consequence of their condition. Peer advocates can help progress a person-centred agenda for people affected by NTDs, however, evidence gaps in the steps to becoming an advocate persist.
METHODS: We wanted to understand the steps towards a peer advocacy role for skin NTDs. We used the participatory Stepping Stones method to identify steps on the journey to becoming an advocate with 48 participants, followed by three in-depth life histories with peer advocates for other

BACKGROUND: Risky alcohol use is rising among some groups of women. This trend is concerning given their vulnerability to alcohol-related harm arising from biological and socio-cultural factors. Stigma, caregiving responsibilities, and limited childcare often reduce access to traditional treatment. Concurrently, population-wide increases in psychological distress are driving demand for support services. Digital interventions for alcohol use like the Daybreak app may offer accessible, anonymous early intervention, helping to overcome barriers and meet unmet needs.
METHODS: Data were analysed f

This cross-sectional study examined the timing and multilevel correlates of first sexual intercourse among 3,151 Polish adolescents (49.8% boys; mean age = 15.7 ± 1.6 years). Using Cox proportional hazards regression and structural equation modeling (SEM), gender-specific associations and pathways linking community, family, and individual factors to sexual debut were assessed. The median age at first sex was 17.49 years for boys and 18.08 years for girls. Cox regression identified key predictors of earlier sexual debut: for boys, higher peer popularity (HR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.18-1.76), vigorous

BACKGROUND: Effective preventative interventions are urgently needed to address the increasing rates of e-cigarette use among young people and to complement the Australian government's latest tobacco control measures. School-based interventions using peer leaders can effectively shape social norms and expectations associated with tobacco use. This paper describes the protocol for the Breathe Easy All Together (BEAT) study, a process and impact evaluation of the first school-based peer-leadership intervention to prevent adolescent e-cigarette use in Australia.
METHODS: A pre-post test design w

Dual diagnoses of psychosis and drug or alcohol problems (DDp) are prevalent, high-cost presentations, reliably associated with poorer outcomes and greater difficulty engaging with mental health services compared to either condition alone or other mental health problems. Engagement difficulties restrict access to recommended care that could improve outcomes, and thus are a priority treatment target. Contingency management (financial incentives for positive health behaviours, CM), peer support, and text messaging each improve engagement for psychosis or drug/alcohol problems. Despite the high p

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic gaming has been linked to increased levels of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) in youth, but the role of environmental factors remains unclear. We aimed to examine the association of problematic gaming with PLEs and, using affordance theory, to evaluate whether environmental factors could help enhance the identification of this risk.
METHODS: Participants were 6,467 youth (39.2% female) who reported playing digital games, from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study in the U.S. Measures included problematic gaming, peer environment (number of close f

This study examined longitudinal associations between early adolescents' emotional responding and use of cognitive reappraisal and the stability of their friendships with grade-mate peers. The sample consisted of 152 early adolescents (53.29% female) in the sixth and seventh grades from three rural southeastern middle schools who provided school-based peer nominations of their friendships. A stability index of adolescents' close friendships was computed from in-school peer nominations collected at two time points, approximately 1 year apart. Adolescents self-reported their levels of emotional

With the advent of social media, body image concerns have increased among women who frequently engage in social media use. Emerging evidence suggests that midlife women experience negative body image outcomes associated with social media use, and women's body image concerns and social media use may contribute to negative body and age focused talk. Further, negative self-talk while socializing with friends and family may reflect internalized concerns about body image and aging. This study examined associations between social media use, internalization of appearance pressure from social media, t

PURPOSE: Mental health (MH) and mental well-being (WB) are related but distinct, potentially shaped by shared or unique factors. Understanding how influences like bullying, body image, and peer support affect each can guide more targeted interventions.
METHODS: The School Health Research Network includes 176,603 pupils from 196 secondary schools in Wales (94% coverage of all schools). Biannual pupil health survey data were used to explore the relationship between MH (i.e., Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Total Difficulties) and WB (i.e., Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale

Academic burnout is negatively associated with students' overall well-being, hindering their personal growth and long-term development. Positive teacher-student and peer relationships serve as protective factors that may alleviate the exacerbation and severity of academic burnout. This study examined the longitudinal associations between students' interpersonal relationships with teachers and peers and their subsequent levels of academic burnout, as well as the mediating role of self-esteem in these associations. In addition, the moderating role of mindfulness in the first stage of the mediati

BACKGROUND: Stress First Aid (SFA), an evidence-informed peer support intervention to address occupational stress, has been adapted to the needs of the substance use outreach workforce (SUOW) (SFA/SUOW) and pilot tested with initial positive outcomes. The goal of this study is to test and evaluate the effectiveness, implementation and sustainability of SFA/SUOW compared to a no treatment control condition in a hybrid-type I cluster-randomized controlled trial (RCT).
METHODS: Approximately 500 substance use outreach workers (SUOWs) and leaders from approximately 90 substance use outreach (SUO)

INTRODUCTION: Family members play an important role in supporting their loved ones with first episode psychosis (FEP), but few have access to interventions demonstrated to support them in this endeavour. Psychosis REACH (Recovery by Enabling Adult Carers at Home; p-REACH) is a family intervention for psychosis (FIp), delivered directly to families by clinicians and peers, that provides both psychoeducation and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for psychosis (CBT-p) informed skills to family carers. This study aimed to qualitatively explore family participants' experiences of receiving the p-REACH

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing addiction often face barriers to care, including long wait times and social isolation. Peer support, delivered by people with lived experience, can address these challenges by fostering engagement and building recovery skills. This study piloted a peer intervention using the RECovery CAPital (REC-CAP) strengths assessment and planning tool for individuals on a waiting list for alcohol and other drug community treatment.
METHODS: Eligible participants (n = 21) were referred to peer workers for an assessment and goal setting session using REC-CAP between April

Fewer than 40% of infants are exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months despite global recommendations, hindered by socioeconomic, cultural, and systemic barriers. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies provide scalable breastfeeding support, but the effectiveness of digital peer support across settings remains underexplored. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted HIV service use among sexual and gender expansive (SGE) individuals in Kazakhstan and could further erode other key behavioral dimensions of HIV prevention, such as peer HIV communication intentions. We examined the association between COVID-19 disruptions to HIV service use and behavioral intention of peer HIV communication among SGE individuals enrolled in an HIV prevention trial in Kazakhstan, using data from the first 6 months of COVID-19 disruptions assessment (May-October 2020). Among 455 participants retained in the clinical trial during this period, 101
