Ethical, religious and factual beliefs about the supply of emergency hormonal contraception by UK community pharmacists.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Community pharmacists' role in the sale and supply of emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) represents an opportunity to increase EHC availability and utilise pharmacists' expertise but little is known about pharmacists' attendant ethical concerns. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were undertaken with 23 UK pharmacists to explore their views and ethical concerns about EHC. RESULTS: Dispensing EHC was ethically acceptable for almost all pharmacists but beliefs about selling EHC revealed three categories: pharmacists who sold EHC, respected women's autonomy an

Processes linking adolescent problems to substance-use problems in late young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The current study explores three avenues in early young adulthood through which adolescent problems may be linked to later substance use problems: problematic substance use, failure to assume adult roles and responsibilities, and exposure to pro-drug social influences. METHOD: Participants (N = 1,986; 49% female) filled out surveys at ages 18, 23 and 29. Participants were 67% white, 9% black, 10% Hispanic and 8% Asian. Deviance, poor mental health, substance use, alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems, and school dropout were measured at age 18. AOD problems were also measured at ag

The new first listener: Daydreaming styles and self-compassion predict adolescent disclosure to AI, differently in ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: AI chatbots are increasingly becoming a first common point of mental health disclosure for adolescents, suggesting a potential 'Step 0' within stepped-care pathways prior access to professional help. This study examined how daydreaming styles and self-compassion relate to adolescents' disclosure of inner thoughts to an AI 'listener', and whether these psychological processes differ among young people with ADHD, for whom spontaneous mind wandering and attentional control difficulties may be especially salient. DESIGN: A large-scale cross-sectional online survey was conducted with ad

The Association Between Loneliness and Suicidal Behaviour Among Adolescents Who Experience a Relative or Friend's Suicide or Suicide Attempt: Longitudinal Study of the Add Health Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents who experience a peer or relative's suicidal behavior can feel alienated from their peers and are at increased risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts. However, it is unclear whether loneliness is a risk factor for suicidal behavior in this vulnerable group. METHOD: We analyzed data from 5,259 participants in the US National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) reporting past-year experience of the suicide or suicide attempt of a friend or relative at either Wave I or II. We examined the longitudinal association between past-week loneliness (expo

Impact of COVID-19 on the implementation of mental health interventions for adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are a vulnerable population disproportionately affected by mental health disorders due to the combined burden of chronic illness, stigma and socioeconomic challenges. In response, numerous mental health interventions have been implemented to support ALHIV. However, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted health systems, particularly in-person services, potentially undermining the delivery and efficacy of these interventions. This protocol describes the methodology for a systematic review that will assess the im

College Student Social Network Characteristics and Alcohol Use: Differences (and Similarities) Based on Sexual Identity and Attraction.

OBJECTIVE: Sexual minority college students have higher alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences than heterosexual students. Peers are salient determinants of young adult drinking, and examining social network characteristics is useful for understanding peer influence. This study used social network methods to understand network characteristics, alcohol use (i.e., maximum drinks), and alcohol consequences of sexual minority and heterosexual college students. METHOD: Sexual minority and heterosexual junior-year college students (N = 1,150) were compared on (a) social network features (eige…

Social network interventions for dietary adherence among adults with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Optimal adherence to recommended diets is crucial to achieving long-term glycaemic control among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) individuals. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of interventions that target dietary adherence through social networks. Since social networks can influence individuals' health behaviours, it is important to thoroughly evaluate the impact of social network interventions on dietary adherence in adults with T2D. This systematic review protocol aimed to provide insights into future interventions and improve diabetes management st

Adolescent Antecedents of Young Adult Homelessness: a Cross-national Path Analysis.

Adolescent and young adult health, development, and behavior lay a foundation for future population health. Increasing rates of young adult homelessness mean there is a need for research which generates evidence to support a stronger focus on population-level prevention. Using longitudinal data from a population-based sample of young adults participating in the cross-nationally matched International Youth Development Study, we examined adolescent antecedents of young adult homelessness in Washington State in the USA and in Victoria, Australia. Participants were surveyed using a modified versio

A Cepstral Peak Prominence (CPP) Voice Analysis in Iranian Post-lingual Deaf Adult Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVE: In standardized connected speech samples, cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and smoothed CPP (CPPS) have been described as accurate parameters to evaluate voice quality. Lack of normal auditory feedback in post-lingually deaf CI users might influence tuning the acoustic parameters in speech production. Based on shreds of evidence, normal hearing results in suitable vocal control through the sensory-motor linkage. The main aim of the present study was to compare the cepstral values between the Iranian cochlear implant group and normal peers. METHOD: Persian CAPE-V sentences were record

Early childhood social reticence and neural response to peers in preadolescence predict social anxiety symptoms in midadolescence.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood social reticence (SR) and preadolescent social anxiety (SA) symptoms increase the risk for more severe SA in later adolescence. Yet, not all at-risk youth develop more severe SA. The emergence of distinct patterns of neural response to socially evocative contexts during pivotal points in development may help explain this discontinuity. We tested the extent to which brain function during social interactions in preadolescence influenced the effects of SA and early childhood SR on predicting SA symptoms in midadolescence. METHODS: Participants (N = 53) were assessed f

Sport experience is correlated with complex motor skill recovery in youth following concussion.

A previous study showed prolonged cognitive-motor integration (CMI) deficits in youth with a history of concussion who were classified as asymptomatic by current return-to-play protocols, highlighting potential differences between clinical symptom recovery and skill recovery. The present study examines factors that may influence skilled performance recovery (defined as matching the skill level of no-concussion history peers) post-concussion in a similar cohort. Sixty-four asymptomatic youth (M = 13 yrs.) soccer, hockey, and lacrosse players with a concussion history (M = 14 months post-concuss

How not to lose the top job.

If you're on the way to becoming CEO, take care. Many anointed successors find their path to the corner office unexpectedly blocked. The obstacle is usually a mismanaged relationship with any of six kinds of stakeholders: the current chief executive, the successor's peers, his or her direct reports, customers, analysts and shareholders, and the board of directors. Succession isn't an entirely rational process, explains veteran executive coach Goldsmith. Personal issues, egos, and emotions influence succession decisions just as much as business logic. Look at what happened in 1978 to Lee Iacocc

Falling off track during the transition to high school: what we know and what can be done.

Ninth grade, observes Ruth Curran Neild, marks a critical juncture in American schooling. Students who manage the academic demands of the transition to high school have a high probability of graduating four years later. But those who do not-who fail to earn as many credits as they should during ninth grade-face a substantially elevated risk of dropping out of high school. Neild examines four theories about why ninth grade poses difficulties for some students. The first is that ninth grade coincides with life-course changes, such as reduced parental supervision and increased peer influence. The…

A component analysis of attentional problems of educationally handicapped boys.

Seventy-three educationally handicapped (EH) and 78 regular class, normally achieving (NA) boys grades 3-8 were tested with a series of measures selected to test three components of attention: coming to attention, decision making, and maintaining attention over time. EH and NA samples were subdivided into three gropus by grade level (grades 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8). Based on a teacher-completed behavioral check list, the EH group was further subdivided according to pupils perceived by teachers as hyperactive or nonhyperactive. With the exception of the youngest group, EH and NA samples did not diffe

Association of Age-Related Hearing Loss with Domain-Specific Cognitive Performance in Older Adults.

Background/Objectives: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is highly prevalent among older adults and has been linked to cognitive decline. However, the specific cognitive domains most vulnerable to ARHL and whether these associations exhibit lateralized effects remain unclear, which is critical for understanding and mitigating its broader impact on neurocognitive function. This study aimed to characterize the clinical profile of ARHL and examine associations between hearing thresholds and cognitive performance across domains, including the influence of educational attainment as a proxy for cognit
