Reduction of infection-stimulated periapical bone resorption by the biological response modifier PGG glucan.

Pulpal and periodontal diseases are bacterial infections which result in local connective tissue and bone destruction. Effective host resistance to these infections is primarily mediated by neutrophils and other phagocytic cells. PGG glucan (poly-beta 1-6-glucotriosyl-beta 1-3-glucopyranose glucan) is a biological response modifier which stimulates the production of neutrophils and upregulates their phagocytic and bactericidal activity. In the present studies, the effect of PGG glucan on infection-stimulated alveolar bone resorption was tested in an in vivo model. Periapical bone resorption wa

Evaluation of alveolar bone in relation to nutritional status during pregnancy.

Demand for nutrients necessary for the formation of mineralized tissues increases dramatically during pregnancy to meet fetal requirements. The purpose of this clinical study was to identify short-term effects of pregnancy and dietary intakes of calcium, phosphorus, protein, and vitamin C on radiographic density and alveolar crest morphology of the mandible. Seventy-six subjects between ten and 20 weeks' gestational age were recruited from the Jefferson County, Alabama, Department of Health maternity clinic. Initially, an evaluation of their diet was done, and a single periapical radiograph wa

Zirconia-based versus metal-based single crowns veneered with overpressing ceramic for restoration of posterior endodontically treated teeth: 5-year results of a randomized controlled clinical study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this 5-year randomized controlled trial was to compare the longevity and clinical behavior of single posterior crowns made with pressable ceramic on zirconia and on metal frameworks, and if failures occur, to delineate the contributing factors. METHODS: 72 patients, who needed the covering of at least a molar and/or premolar, were included in the study. All teeth were endodontically treated, with absence of periapical lesion or active periodontitis. Ninety single crowns were made with zirconia or metal framework and covered with pressable veneering ceramics. Two indepen

Immunohistochemical analysis of apoptosis-related factors in lining epithelium of radicular cysts.

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest that apoptosis-related factors are involved in the inflammatory processes of marginal periodontal lesions. However, the role of apoptosis in periapical inflammatory lesions remains unclear. We investigated the possible role of apoptotic cell death in periapical inflammatory lesions by means of immunohistochemical analysis of apoptosis-related factors and use of a cell proliferation marker. METHODS: Paraffin-embedded sections of 19 radicular cysts (RCs), and five residual radicular cysts (RRCs) and control specimens of normal gingivae excised from seven cadaver

Two and Three-dimensional Parameters in Cone-beam Computed Tomography Monitoring of Apical Periodontitis in Traumatized Teeth: Case Report and Long-term Follow-up.

Assessment of apical periodontitis (AP) is a challenging task. This case report highlights the CBCT diagnosis and monitoring of periapical radiolucency (PR) using ITK-SNAP software 3.8v in a complex clinical scenario of three traumatized anterior teeth. An 11-year-old male patient complained of recurrent swelling and pain in the maxillary incisor region (teeth #11 and #21). His parents reported a history of traumatic injury affecting these teeth two years back. Digital periapical radiographic (DPR) and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) were requested. PR was identified on teeth #11, #21, an

Association between maternal chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) and low birth weight preterm birth (LBWPT).

In the literature, there are case reports suggesting that Borrelia burgdorferi infection may induce autoimmune diseases dependent on antinuclear antibodies (ANA). The present study was undertaken in order to verify this possibility in a prospective manner. The study group comprised 78 consecutive patients (51 women and 27 men, median age 41.5 years) referred to our Department for the serologic diagnosis of Borrelia infection. The patients' sera were tested for Borrelia-specific IgM and IgG (Recombinant Antigen Enzyme Immunoassays, Biomedica). Antibodies against Borrelia were detected in 31 (39

[Maxillary sinusitis of dental origin].

A survey is given of etiology, diagnosis and treatment of maxillary sinusitis from dental origin. Periapical infection and oro-antral fistula are among the most frequent causes. Removal of the dental origin is of primary importance and sometimes the sole removal of the odontogenic cause is a sufficient therapy. On the other hand closure of oro-antral fistula without simultaneous cure of the concomitant sinusitis is of no use.

Palatal root endodontic microsurgery in maxillary molars using the palatal approach: a case study.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, the buccal approach is typically the primary choice for endodontic microsurgery. Owing to the thickness of the buccal bone plate, the distance between the buccal bone plate and palatal lesion location, and soft tissue traction, the palatal approach may be more suitable for microsurgery for apical periodontitis of the palatal roots of the maxillary molars. However, the length of the palatal root, location of the greater palatine artery (GPA) and foramen (GPF), and surgical field of observation make palatal surgery challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: With the aid o

Indirect pulp therapy in a symptomatic mature molar using calcium enriched mixture cement.

Dental pulp has the ability of repair/regeneration. Indirect pulp therapy (IPT) is recommended for pulp preservation in asymptomatic teeth with extremely deep caries as well as teeth with clinical symptoms of reversible pulpitis. In this case study, we performed IPT with calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement on a symptomatic permanent molar. After clinical/radiographic examinations the tooth was diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis and associated apical periodontitis. IPT involved partial caries removal, the placement of CEM cement pulp cap and overlying adhesive permanent restoration. At the

The use of cone beam computed tomography in the management of dens invaginatus affecting a strategic tooth in a patient affected by hypodontia: a case report.

AIM: To report on the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the diagnosis and management of dens invaginatus. SUMMARY: Chronic apical periodontitis of an invaginated maxillary lateral incisor was diagnosed in a patient suffering from hypodontia and awaiting active orthodontic therapy. Loss of the tooth would have complicated orthodontic treatment. Conventional periapical radiographs provided insufficient information about the nature of the invagination and its relation to the root canal to formulate an appropriate plan for treating the tooth. A small volume CBCT scan of the tooth rev

Influence of irrigation and intracanal dressing on the healing process of dogs' teeth with apical periodontitis.

Dogs' teeth with apical periodontitis were treated endodontically, Dakin's solution being used in an experimental group as the irrigation solution, and camphorated paramonochlorophenol as an intracanal dressing. For a second group of teeth, the irrigation solution used was physiologic saline, dry cotton only being placed into the pulpal chamber to take the place of an intracanal dressing. In a second visit, overinstrumentation and a new application of the same kind of dressing were performed, the root canals being then filled with gutta-percha cones and zinc oxide-eugenol cement.
